Hi All - help needed - I'm confused by front forks

My son got a 2nd hand Oxygen E-Mate which has Suntour NEX forks - the alloy is cracked where the two lower legs are joined.

It's 26" wheel, disc brake, side-facing IS disk calliper mounts - 260mm long steerer tube 1 ⅛" dia.

Can I replace this with any old brand? We don't want anything mega expensive, it's only for road use

Sure you can.
Just make sure the steerer tube on the replacement fork will fit into the head tube of your bike. Carefully match steerer dimensions vs head tube dimensions (diameter, length, tapered vs straight, etc) and you'll be fine. You may also need a new headset bearing depending on what you've already got installed. If you can just reuse the headset you've got then it'll be a bit cheaper.

Good luck.

It is long, but NEW forks have very long steerer tubes and you have to cut the new tube down to meet your needs.

You can always find a less expensive fork used, but you will run the risk of the previous owner cutting it too short for your bike's headtube.

If it's only for road use I'd recommend a rigid fork. there are plenty available new but you will probably also have luck finding a take-off at a used bike parts shop if there's one in your town.

are all the calliper mounts compatible? - and could I replace the broken NEX V2 with a new Suntour XCT?

The caliper mounts on XCT are post mount (and on the old forks is IS)so do I just get rid of the adapter?

Your gonna have fun sorting a 2nd fork with uncut steerer, they come up occasionally
just not often, if its a straight 1 1/8th straight steerer then settle in for a while, new maybe your
sure way of getting a fork to suit, or perhaps send away and have a steerer replaced at cost,
then you can choose any 2nd hand fork.

Some late 90s forks with the bolt up CSU steerer, can be had cheap, 1 1/8th straight steerer,
switch steerer to length needed, its possibble to run a T6 Aluminium round bar in 28.6mm OD with
5mm wall to compamsate for the lack of heat treat, purchase in lengths up to around 1.5m,
though you would have to plug and thread for stem bolt or run a through bolt out to the bottom
of the steerer with a base plate of sorts.

Fox forks uncut steerers come in at 256mm, unsure on other brands.

Worth noting, if your in the USA there maybe liable issues with regards to steerer
replacement, though not confirmed, some threads on here have shown dead ends to
getting steerers replaced in the USA, whense, here in the UK and Europe replace steerers
is undertaken by a few suspension shops

That is actually the one of the most important questions to ask when buying a 2nd hand fork, so if you do, then you should be fine.
