This is my first time building my own Downhill Rig so I would appreciate all your knowledge and expertise on helping me create a monster Wink

Bear in mind I ride in Whistler in the Bike Park and North Shore trails. I ride drops and steep descents. Also my budget is only $1600 (Give or Take a hundred) for the rest of the parts needed and i am happy to buy 2nd hand as everything i have is 2nd hand already Smile

This is my Frame.

Crankset = Shimano Saint (Thinking) Little heavy, but nice and stiff

Derailleur = Shimano Saint 150 (Thinking) I run one, and wouldnt change it for anything. Heavy, but well worth itif you hit rocks on a regular basis.

Chain = I run XTR, or wipperman. I've snapped the Sram ones I ran

Chainguide = If going for light weight, LG1, or Gamut.

Cassette = Need to know if youre wanting a road or mtn cassette.

Wheelset= 823's on either Hadley or Industry nine. I wont change mine for anything. durable, sexy, and flawless function.

Tyres = I run Minion 2.5 front, 2.35 high roller rear. Both tubeless. Works well for nearly all conditions.

Bar = I say that one is personal preference. There are so many different sweeps and bends that it is hard to say "buy this" without it potentially causing your wrists to hurt, since all people are built different.

Stem = Thomson elite if you have the $$$.

Pedals = Platforms- I like DMR v12 mags. Clipless I run Time.

Grips = Completely personal preference, I run Oury lock ons.

Hopefuly I can help out another 4 owner. Great brake choice by the way!

Crankset = Grav Light Mega Exo's are cheap though the Saints are just as good
Derailleur = What ever you find for your price, Shimano Saint 150's are fine
Chain = KMC 9SXL dirt cheap and lighter than the Sram Hollow pins
Chainguide = Any E13, Gamut, or even run a Boxguide for its price
Cassette = See what you have money for
Rims = See if you can get a cheap wheelset, the Transitions off the top of my head
Front Hub =
Rear Hub =
Tyres = Maxxis Minions DHF's front and rear are my fav
Bar = Easton EA70 only 25 grams heavier than the Monkeylites
Stem = Thomson if you can do it, although if your 888 comes with an integrated stick with it.
Pedals = Wellgo MG1
Grips = ODI Rogue Lock Ons

Crankset = Shimano Saint (heavy) might be able to get away with RF Atlas if you are somewhat smooth or FSA Gravity Lights (pretty cheap).

Derailleur = Sram X0 if you have the money or "downgrade" to X9

Chain = Connex 920 Teflon

Chainguide = E.13 LG1

Cassette = Shimano Ultegra 11-23 if you want a micro cage setup or Shimano XT/Sram PG990 if you want a mountain setup.

Rims = EX823

Front Hub = Hadley if you have the dough or Hope Pro II if you need to sacrifice a little.

Rear Hub = Hadley if you have the dough or Hope Pro II if you need to sacrifice a little.

Tyres = Maxxis Minion DHF in both the front and rear

Bar = Easton Monkey Lite DH OS

Stem = Thomson Elite

Pedals = Shimano DX

Grips = ODI Ruffian

You probably won't have enough money to get I9's like suggested as those wheels are $1100USD for hubs, spokes, and laced to EX823. Ironically, the Hope Pro II laced with DT Swiss Double Butted spokes to EX823 rims is lighter than the I9 setup and a lot less. Been there done that!

Crankset = Shimano Hone or Gravity lights (weight vs. durability)
Derailleur = XT Shadow (lighter than Saint and i find crisper but not as strong)

That is dependent on your leg length and preference. I run 175s, as my legs are VERY long. Id get longer if I could.

Front chainrings affect your gear ratio. Less teeth if yo like to have less effort to pedal uphill, but it gets lower top speed. More for more top speed, but hard to pedal.

165mm or 170mm, basically a trade-off between ground clearance and pedalling power. 44t is too large in my opinion. 38t sounds about right. you can get 36t if you want to be slightly more pedalling friendly or 40t if you find yourself running out of gears too often.

well im 5'8" (172.5cm) and guess not so long legs.....so would 165 be too short or just right?

im guessing 138T would suffice?

cheers guys....appreciate all ur knowledge and expertise Smile

I had 175 Holzfellers and they constantly hit the ground in the dual dh setting. Now I've got 165 and couldn't be happier, that little change really helped.

It's in the FR setting in the front to raise the bb a little, the dh setting drops it a little over an inch.

wow...nice ass frame wilson! i was thinking of the FR 2350 but i dont if the price justifies it......whats ur opinion?

Posted: Mar 10, 2008 at 19:40 Quote
Thanks, no...........they really don't. They look cool, I have the denty 06' versions. I could have gotten a lighter and stronger wheelset for less. Rather have the 2350's over Deemax though.
