What Size Tire Widths Fit on 29" x 45 mm Rims?

I have a 2017 Trek Stache. It came with 29" x 3.00" tires on 45mm rims. The 3.00" wide tires are harder to come by than standard 29" tires so I'm wondering if I could get away with narrower tires on the same rims such as 2.60" or 2.80".

Yes the 2.8's should be fine, 2.6's could work too but the side knobs just might not stick out as far as you like as the tire profile will be flatter.
