Hi everyone,

Tried to search this but couldn’t find what I was looking for. So I’m interested in purchasing a bike from a member here in the US, we’re looking to meet up on the US side near Buffalo, and was wondering for those who have purchased a used bike from a private sale (not a shop) when you bring it across the boarder what if any taxes, duties etc would the bike be subject to? The bike would be a Santa Cruz, so since their a US company (although frames made elsewhere) would that apply for any type of free trade agreement?

Just trying to be informed so I know what to expect coming back home. Those with experience in this would be a great help!

Thx in advance
J

Why claim you bought it in the US? It is used, just say you brought it down with you.....

I’ve thought of that, but I’ve read from random posts here and there that if I come into the US with no bike and they were to realize that I’m returning with a bike, that could be cause for concern. Now I could just tell them that I brought it over from Canada when I didn’t, but I don’t want to chance it if this would be a no no. If I was bringing something privately purchased but was of small value or was small in size I would probably just roll the dice. But a bike that could be worth 4-5k I don’t know if I’d want to do that.

So I’m just wondering if anyone from Canada has purchased a used bike this way and brought it back over the border (on a bike rack) and had issues

I'm not even Canadian but I think I found your answer pretty quickly: You're gonna have to pay "regular duty and taxes" for your 4k bike:

And here's the "Estimate Duty and Taxes" page:

This is good info! And that link is great. I wonder though if theirs a difference when the item is new (purchased from a store) or if bought used privately. I assume that new vs an item that’s used and bought privately would have different taxes and duty applied to it right?

Not a tax attorney, but I assume taxes would have to be based upon the price of sale. Price of sale would be evidenced by a receipt.

You can make receipt or buy an old receipt book and fill in the price.

Ya from what I hear, if I have a bill of sale that should be sufficient proof of purchase
