also it was VERY cold at the top of the pass, so any new rain is going to be snow... Frown

Turned around and retreated on the PVJ climb on Tuesday eve at miserable, somewhere between irritating and terrible.
Warm enough chugging up, but yes, cold on the way down which made me think that I made the right decision.
Back in Cowtown and dry again, hit my neighbourhood trails in Bowmont, first ride there in a long while.
Lots of new posts lining the river escarpment trail, soon to be decorated with wire fencing no doubt, a great addition to the "natural area". The Klippert gravel pit junkyard is now but a memory, as I'm sure Sideshow will soon be as well, now that the city has taken possession.Cry

i only i ask that because i asked one of the buuider guys what the mmbts membership insurance is about and said it was laibility for them for if someone gets hurt, it would make sense to have it for a race

Liability is one big reason. It also costs money to put on the event, and that has to come from somewhere. As was said, why wouldn't you join, membership is essentially free after you get your gift card, and you get represent with the coolest sticker in town. You also get the chance to win prizes, hear about events, and shape the local biking community.

Join the discussion about race suggestions here.

Hope to see everyone at the Trail Day on Saturday.

Sideshow Bob is far from being done in. The City is very aware of how well used and loved that trail is. In fact, come out to our Bowmont Trail Day this Saturday, and you can talk directly with the City of Calgary person in charge of Bowmont Park who is working with us on deciding what to do about Sideshow Bob.

Chris.
i worry about sideshow because 10 yrs ago when this all started, i was told directly from the city official, that it was definately getting closed because of bird nesting concerns and safety and liability issues.
im not holding my breath
but i bet they reroute a new trail thru the reclaimed property. a trail over the old studebaker in the bush maybe?

Chris.
By Sideshow Bob, I am referring specifically to the trail running along the steep sidehills above the former gravel pit.
In my opinion, anyone who believes that the city will sanction this trail as it is now, is delusional.
They will trot out the usual reasons- environmental, safety, etc...
And while I support CMBA, and the great work that has been accomplished by dedicated volunteers, I find it hard to get excited about that new route in Waterfall Valley, when the existing trail worked fine for 25 years until the city decided to meddle with it (yes, I've been riding in Bowmont since 1985).
Sorry to sound so cynical, but I have seen the reality of the city's mtb policy too many times already.

Despite what it feels like, the City doesn't just randomly change/close trails to annoy mountain bikers. The City reacts to calls and complaints from residents. If we just complain among ourselves, the City will listen to the non-biking residents that show up in meetings and call the City. There are people that don't want bikes in Bowmont Park, there are even people that don't want people, dogs or bikes in Bowmont Park.

The new route around Waterfall Valley is not intended to be exciting. The increased use of Waterfall Valley led to erosion problems, siltation of the river and risk to a fish spawning area - this led to the installation of a boardwalk and stairs. Boardwalks, stairs, people and bikes are not compatible, so the best (not perfect) solution is the reroute we (CMBA) are building with the City.

In the spring, I walked Sideshow Bob with staff from City Parks and Daniel Scott, a trail specialist from IMBA. We (yes all of us) were looking at ways to keep Sideshow Bob open and have it become a "City designated trail".

I invite you and everybody that rides in Bowmont Park to get involved and keep Sideshow Bob and other trails in Bowmont Park open. The attitudes at the City are changing. We need the City to hear from more bikers. I have lived in Silver Springs for 25 years and I'm not going to give up on Sideshow Bob yet.

Your reply gives me hope.
Way back when Nose Hill was the big issue for city riders (95-97?), I was quite involved, but in the end, a plan was already in place and riders concerns were pretty much ignored. The so-called "consultations" were just window dressing. In the end though, things up there are pretty much the same as they were, with the addition of some paved and gravel pathways.
So I'll keep my fingers crossed for Bowmont.
Saturday is my regular hiking day with my wife, so I won't make the trail day, if I know what's good for meBig Grin

This is all a very interesting conversation about the survival of a classic city of Calgary XC trail but what are the conditions out on Moose? Any word on Baldy? JP/Cox? Anything?

With all that Rain Wednesday is has to be wet. But the Moose webcam looks like the snow isn't too low. Should be great day for the trail day tomorrow. Damp dirt to work with and easy to see where the drainage problems are. I know you will be out. Hope to see lots of the young energenic guys out and they can have their vote where the toonie race should be held.

BigSteve, there's hiking involved in trail work...whats the problem? Razz

Toonie race: summit lot -> SpecialK -> tom snow -> all the way out to Station Flats...but I'm sadistic like that.

+1.
we should also add a category that starts at the Moose road parking lot and goes up Pneuma to get to Special K, chugging a beer at every trail crossing on the way up. Beer

Sounds good! tup I predict my time to be just under 6 hours. Any chance of substituting gin and tonics for the beer?

Yeah, and put a 20 pound weight onto Nutbrown's bike to make it a bit more fair. Them skinny racers are putting us old farts to shame.
