would single speed be good for starting freeriding and DH

No, it'll be too easy of a gearing.

And to the person above who said that you need a tensioner, it's for VERTICAL dropouts.

Vertical.

in some cases chain tensioners are needed for frames with horizontal drop outs. my friend needed some for his blackmarket riot

True, but the majority of those are frames with very short dropouts.

umm going single speed for freeride or dh as long as ur talking about fully would be difficult. if u plan on using a hardtail then its easy. with a fully u need to set up a tensioner to keep ur chain tension somewhat constant through your travel

what do u mean by too easy of gearing?

I don't know about you, but when i'm doing DH, I am usually always in the highest gear in the back (11t) and I use a 38t ring. that's close to a 3.5:1 ratio. Most people ruin a 2:1 ratio for SS. You could run something like 3:1, but that wouldn't be very practical.
so would a 3:1 for SS be like 40t in the front and 10t in the back
lol
