Last time I checked wheel strength is more about how the wheel is built than how many walls it has. If a double wall rim has every other spoke loose, it will not be nearly as strong as a properly built single wall rim. (Obviously)

Well, you should have seen what happened when I tried truing my own rims! They just fell apart afterward Arent trials riders pretty hard on their rims anyway? Riding off shipping crates wouldn't be too easy for a weak rim to handle.

Not too bad actually. Most pro riders are running single walled rims(with holes!)...but they're quite wide(40 to 47 mm), and knowing how to land properly is key as well.
