when my friend rawed his it was like chrome so he didn't clear coat it and now it's dark and looks amazing

If you don't lacquer and it's steel, it'll rust if you go out in the rain or if it gets damp.
Plus after you've stripped all the paint/anodizing off, go over it with wire wool then polish to get a chrome/clean look.

Or a drill with a wire brush head. Good for getting in the tighter areas

That's true but this is just cranks so unless they have cut outs bench grinder will be faster

Wire brush is effective, and you could use a dual action sander to remove any deep scratches. Then go through the grits to polish them up.

My personal experience with wire brush was terrible, it just didnt work.
