Right, I would go for Marin Rocky Ridge 2009. My subjective is that is has the sexiest frame of all HT. Equipment is not top notch but can be easily upgraded to create superb bike.
Here are some references for it. http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/bikes/mountain/product/rocky-ridge-09-32865 http://www.marin.co.uk/2009/bikedetail.php?ModNo=3972-1F#
15/17" frame (depending on how tall you are), pike u-turn, double chainset with 11-26 cassett, hydro disks of your choice 180frnt160rr rotors, lightish 26" wheel set 5.1 on pro2 maybe, 2.3 tyres of your choice and then shifters, mechs and finishing kit of your choice
I say get a Santa Cruz Chameleon! They can take up to 160mm of travel and can be built up to do some big stuff!
+1. amazing bike
Yep, so versatile, lightweight frame yet super strong. Can be setup as a SS or with gears. Geometry works well with short or long travel forks. It's about as close as you can get to an " all rounder" frame.
