Its disputable from company to company some will say Mavic is stronger than Sun others will say Tag rules both some will day Tag is all crap. But TAG wheels are claimed to be the toughest.

haha doubletracks are the most durable thing I've ridden...
I swear you can land 20ft to flat on bare rims and barely scratch the paint.
I really want to try those tag wheels though

Hard to beat Tag...nothing like an 8.2 pound wheelset.

Maybe 24" or 26" Arrow DHH rims with Seismic Hubs, brass nipples, CX-Ray spokes in a 3 cross pattern (think it's three cross, the lace pattern I'm thinking about).

mtx rims are pretty effin tough

Mavic 729 on Hope Pro II.

Although the quality of the wheel build itself is just as in important as good components.

as a wheel builder I would say the ability of the wheel to deform under impact and distribute the stress throughout the structure is considerably more important than running a heavy rim

in fact, many overbuilt (heavy and superstiff) rims will not allow the wheel to work in the correct way, and end up snapping spokes or shearing nipples, which can cause the wheel to fail, the lack of stress distribution throughout the wheel can also cause localised damage such as a ding, flat spot or big bend

something I have often found is that wheels with heavy, stiff rims are hard to true because it takes alot of spoke tension to have any influence on the wheel shape (both vertical roundness and lateral straightness)

you would be better off going for a mid weight, more pliable rim and good quality spokes from Sapim or DT Swiss and using brass nipples, built by a good wheel builder, than just buying the heaviest, burliest wheel you can get...

the most important factor after having a wheel built using good components, is actually "maintaining" that wheel so that it remains in good condition

any wheel no matter how well built initially, will fail if you let it lapse into bad condition as the wheel relies on uniform tension and maintenance to keep its strength and stiffness

those TAG wheels are simple horrible - a well build "wire wheel" (i.e. conventional rim, spokes and hubs) will ride so much nicer than any moulded nylon or carbon wheel, and give you the ability to actually maintain it using spoke tension
