My friend is going off to college to major in photography, so graduation present I thought I'd buy her some kind of lens for her camera. I finally decided to buy her a 15mm fisheye lens and then when I was talking to her week ago and she told me her parents bought her a fisheye for her gift, fvck! So I returned the lens and now I don't know what to get her, she wants a tilt-shift lens too, but I don't have that much money to spend on her.

So what would you guys recommend me to get her since I don't know that much about lens specially since she been doing it for couple years and I got got a dslr week ago. She doesn't really do action shots more landscapes, people, and artsy heres her flcikr if that helps too recommend me a lens for her. Thanks

Forgot to add she has a Nikon D40 with a NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II

I probably don't know any more than you about lenses, but since she has a 15 and an 18-55, why not just go 55-200?
It's a great gift idea no matter what, I know I'd be pumped.

Yeah, 55-200mm sounds good, if ur a millionaire get her the 70-200mm f2.8...
otherwise a 50mm f1.6 or f1.2 is super good for portraits, sharp as hell & pretty cheap.

wide angle lenses are sick for landscape shots.

Nikon makes a 55-200mm as well. Depending on how much $$$ you have, the sigma 70-200mm 2.8 is crazy cool and will autofocus with the D40.

Nikon's 55-200 would really be a nice compliment to her other two lenses. I really like mine, it's sharp and focuses quickly plus it's not heavy (which some may not like because it's plastic). The 70-200 is a $2000 lens, btw. The 55-200 is about $200. The 55-200 is a good lens, nothing amazing, but it will compliment her other two lenses nicely. Can't really go wrong with it.

I will look into the 55-200mm she may or may not have that since I seen her with one before but it could just to barrowed, honestly if I sell my bike I may just buy her the 70-200mm f2.8 since I'm just that nice haha.

I can only find a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8?

also what does the "f" in front of the "1.4 or 1.8" mean?

Haha, damn, u can be my friend & buy it for me haha Razz
Yeah, either of those will be great, go for the f/1.4 then. The f here is just how wide the widest aperture with that lens is. f/1.2 is pretty much as wide as it gets, but f/1.8 is still really good. So you can shoot in pretty low light & have a super shallow depth of field. Otherwise an F-Stop is just a unit of measurement of exposure.

Well I said I might, but if I get her one probably a 55-200mm. But what I'm told the New Nikon 35mm f/1.8 would act like 50mm on her D40 for w/e reason that is and the 50mm would act like 80mm.
