600 - 800 - 1000 and finally 1200 grit before mothers polish. Good part is its easy to maintain now that the hard part is over (the sanding Smooth)

I recommend you get it walnut blasted or soda blasted, way easier and not very expensive, probably $30 for the whole frame, maybe less (about the same you'd spend on stripper anyway)
