no but you need a crown race puller and you just have to switch them

no. you can usually get a crown race off by using a flat flat flat head screwdriver and slowly prying each side up. you do need to use alot of force to put it on a new fork though, usually shops have a special kind of tube that fits over the steerer tube and allows them to punch it down hard. if you don't feel confident with doing that though bring it to a shop, would be like $5 max to swap a crown race since it takes about 1 minute if you know what your doing.

you would only really want one if your a bike store, have a really expensive home shop, or have a headset that has a crown race thats super hard to get off. but most likely anything that is thin enough to pry will be able to get the race off your fork.

steerer tubes snapping are usually due to not getting a new headset along with new forks actually

whats a crown race?

that doesn't really make sense. as long as the headset is still in working order and fits the steerer tube it would be fine.

its pretty much a small ring that sits at the bottom of your steerer tube. basically it makes the fork and headset work together holding them tight. you don't need a new headset if your replacing your fork. I've never heard of people snapping there steerer tubes because of not changing a headset. the only time that would happen if you forget to put the race or install the headset/fork wrong.

to avoid any mistakes or all out confusion on your side since its kind of obvious your having trouble understanding this (I'm not trying to be harsh, just helping out). here is what i would say.

get your new fork.

wheel your hole bike into your bike store.

tell them you got a new fork and need the race on the fork swapped.

depending on how busy they are, it would probably take 5 minutes, to a day, and cost about $5.

that way you can be sure that it is done right and don't have to worry about your fork snapping. if you don't know what your doing on a bike, especially when installing something, bring it to a store or your most likely going to mess it up. if they aren't to busy, ask them to explain exactly what there doing, why it has to be done, and how to do it.
