Frame purchase: Got screwed by friend's dad.... is it worth burning bridges?

Hey everyone.

Basically, a friend was hooking me up with his old Stinky frame for $300...$100 for a fork I wasn't aware I owed him for and $200 for the frame. I also got wheels and cranks because he got hooked up and didn't need them... he was selling it so cheap because he wanted to see it still get ridden and he knew I needed an FR bike.

So I brought the frame home to get it ready to ride... I hadn't paid anybody yet but I spent the night at his house to build it up. His mom knew what we were doing. When my mom came to pick me up they had a long discussion about it.

So, I took it home and started work. It took me forever. I had to work for my dad all weekend for a ride to the LBS for them to help me. I also traded my fork off my Riot for a 6 inch travel fork, making it basically useless, because I needed one for the Stinky.

Well, I get a call from my friend saying that I can't get the frame... I've done all this crap and it's because his dad is pissed that he paid $1800 for it 2 and a half years ago and I'm getting the frame.... so he changed his mind waayyy too late. I can't absorb anything, I don't get handouts and now I'm stuck with a bunch of shit I don't need.

I called and got his mom. We talked for like 20 minutes and she still wouldn't do anything. Every time I made apoint she would always say "Well Al is mad."

Honestly, I'm fvcking pissed that he screwed me over like that, and more pissed that the woman won't disagree with her husband, who is usually nice to me but has something of a temper.

I don't fvcking care who I make mad at this point, I'm not going to sit around and lose everything because a grown man pitched a hiss fit.

How do I pressure him into letting me get the frame? I will point out I actually have it right now. At my house. With locks on the doors.

you keep it and don't give him shit all for the hard time he gave you, and the sudden decision, and when he finally accepts to let you keep the frame hand him over the money, and keep like 100$ for the trouble! hahaha

Well, that's like TOTALLY illegal, isn't it?

IDK, I'll talk to my dad, he's a douchebag, so he'll be able to finagle the frame somehow.

Haha, sounds like you got a good plan.

But seriously, if I were in your position I would tell your buddies dad were to go. It's one thing for a decision like that to be made by a parent earlier on in the deal, I mean shit happens, but that's just silly to do something now. And, not to mention the fact that it's a two and a half year old Stinky frame, really it isn't worth a whole lot more than 300 bucks to anyone but him, and don't forget he payed 1800 for the entire bike, not the frame.

I don't want to get the friend pissed... I'm like the favorite friend of whatever of the parents and I don't want to do anything irreparable.

Tell them what the frame is worth if they were to sell it to anyone else.

If they still won't agree to anything, explain to them what you have already done.

Man, i'd be pissed if that happened to me. I don't think its worth talking to your friends dad aggresively, it won't make him anymore likely to give you the frame. Just try to get your friend to assure him that you can be trusted to keep it good and not chuck it around, also ask what would be done with the frame if he had it?? Assuming he and your friend aren't going to do anything with, it makes sense for it to be in use. Also, what jonbikes said, its 1800 for the whole bike not just the frame

And say that you've already BOUGHT NEW forks for it.

I've already told his mom this, she doesn't seem to want to confront the dad about it.

He got a new Freight Train that I told him to get and he's building it up... it's only natural to pass the savings onto me.

I'm just hurt that he'd screw me like that.

O+

Thats f'd up on their part. I'd keep it, but if your parents are anything like mine, they would make me five it back haha. Tell them that is what the frame is worth and what not. Show them how much they sell on here and ebay.

No Kona is worth destroying a friendship.

Well, here's the problem: No money had been exchanged, so I can't do shit. It was generally understood that I was taking it home to finish building up and I told him I was getting a new fork.... He was letting me borrow it anyway because it was the only complete-ish bike I had at the time.

Hummeroid: I know. That's why I've hung back until now. He doesn't give a shit what I do to get it back, I'm worried about the parents.

No! He's not a douchebag, the DAD is. And the mom is very nice but somewhat spineless.

EDIT: And remember, I didn't pay him yet.

if you havnt already paid for the frame then technically it is still theirs, this is why you should get everything down in writing with signitures. If you have already paid money for it then legally it is yours. I think there has already been a bridge burnt down, if you give the frame back then theres already damage done to your friendship because youll always have hard feelings towards his parents and blame him for not sticking up to his dad and letting you have the frame. if youve already given some money for the frame i say just pay off the rest you owe him and leave it at that. really its up to you though and what you want to do.
