the dicision is yours but i have both a hard tail and a bmx and i end up wriding my dj way more because you can ride almost any thing but good luck on your decision.

and you might look at a specailized p1,2 or3 for that price range and you can always make the bike a single speed if you dont like the gears

I must agree with most of this but bmx bikes are just as good as dj bikes for dirt jumping. Since the forks are rigid on bmx bikes, you'll have greater air and have a greater chance to land at the right place. However, it is true that dj bikes are more forgiving if you over shoot it or dont land due to their suspension fork.
