*snip*

is that Sgwd Ddwli near Pontneddfechan ??

the right hand side of the picture is quite dark... if it's where I think that is there is a lot of tree cover so that's kinda understandable

I think it could do with being cropped tighter with the waterfall more in the top right corner. So you would still get the mix of shades but it would focus the attention a little more on the waterfall.

The waterfall feels so far away... It's the most interesting part of the image, but it doesn't feel like the intended subject. My eye keeps being drawn to the pile of rocks in front of it, or someplace else. Even cropping doesn't help that much.

You know Ken Rockwell? He's kind of an opinionated jerk off, but he wrote a couple articles in his day that I find to be quite on-point. He has one where he basically says something along the lines of:
bigquotesWhen composing an image, ask yourself what drew you to make the image in the first place... Once you've established that core visual element, the real reason for your image, make sure it absolutely dominates your photo. Isolate it as much as possible and remove any unnecessary details or distractions. This your image is clear and strong and the subject is immediately obvious.
I'd say try getting closer to the waterfall next time?

How does one light a photo/achieve the contrast/highlights/look similar to these two photos? They're both by the same photographer, and I know he uses an on camera flash (well one mounted to the hotshoe I believe).

You want to have your photos to have a blown out integrated flash look?

Posted: Feb 2, 2014 at 3:28 Quote
Yeah that's just a straight blast of light at the subject, exactly as the built in flash would provide.

I think he's referring to the cross-processed/high-key/filmesque type look. To me, it looks like he's simply shooting the flash kinda hot and playing the the tones/contrast in processing. I could be wrong though.

Looks like it's on a flash bracket to bring it closer to the lens axis.

Also looks like shit.

That look is gross. Makes everyone in the crowd look sick and yellow. Personally, I've always admired the tones and colours of your film scans Ryan, you've got your hi key flash shots dialed. Your punk images look a lot more natural and enduring- I feel like the blatant cream/blue split toned look was very en trend, but is beginning to have run it's course.

From the angle and harshness of the shadows, looks like it's just a small flash mounted near the lens.

I kinda like the look to be honest, hence why I'm asking. I think it's more to do with the processing, as it is on camera flash (like mounted, and it's more like a T2 style flash/what Richardson does).

I just like the look of Julian's images with his colour stuff. I know he use to shoot a ton of photos with a Contax G2 and the flash mounted on that camera was just right on top. I rarely get the look I desire when I shoot colour film.

Also like the way Dakota Gordon does stuff with on camera flash: http://dakotagordon.tumblr.com/

Like this is my image, and it's one of the few that I like when I shoot colour and flash. If I was able to replicate this look everytime I shot colour film, I'd be pretty damn happy.

To each their own, I suppose.

I like it cause it's a bit different and not just the same as everything else that people are producing these days. I like the more blown out style look he has going and other photographers. Not so much the yellow/orange part but I don't mind it either. It separates his work from the huge amount of other photographers my age and he has blown up (granted he is really good friends with the Odd Future dudes and owes a lot of his success currently to them). Most images I see these days are kind of boring, and they all start to blend in with each other/cross other photographers. This is even more true now that photography is going through a slight shift I've noticed (at least at my school and other areas I've seen), and that is towards a documentary style of shooting like Berman does, and I do. Similar to like Nan Goldin, and Larry Clark in terms of just purely documenting life. One can throw Ryan McGuinely in there too, but like 90% of his shots are really really set up and staged...

But yeah, I like the look of this image of mine as well and just wish I was able to reproduce this look 100% of the time.

I really like Dakota Gordon's work... It's so clean. I would kill to be able to process my images something like these.

And yeah, that's the look I'm talking about.

I find shooting colour film to be so frustrating. While it holds the key to the look and colours I'm after, I cannot afford to pay a pro lab to scan it for me with the appropriate corrections, and I've had such bad luck with my epson V600 that I've practically given up on the thing. Not only can I not get accurate or remotely pleasing colours out of it, even with Vuescan and Silverfast, it seems to be completely unable to extract any detail out of a 35mm negative. It's like the scanner lens is out of focus or something. I've tried putting my negatives under glass instead of the holders and it's a little better, but still

Seeing other photographers pull nice images out of film with what appears to be minimal effort makes me want to smack my head into a wall. The colour and tone of an image is probably the most important aspect of photography for me, almost eclipsing my subject matter, so not being able to get the look I want is very demotivating.
