personally I see two sides to photography and the people who take pictures

I see the documenting photographer. This person takes photographs to mark events important to them in this universe.. whether this is a parent photographing there childs first time on a bike without stabilisers or an enthusiast photographing the first steam train built in 20 years.

To these people it doesn't always matter that the picture is slightly wonky or over / under exposed they care that in 20 years they can look back and say I was there.

The other photographer I see is the artist.

This person is in love with the way an image can make you feel.. this can be from portraits to sweeping vistas. I see these people more interested in the technical side of the image as they have an idea on how they want there image to look to try to portrait the emotion the scenario has made them feel.

So i'm looking at replacing both my macs for a High end gaming laptop, mostly due to future proofing.

Here's what I need:

-Under 3200
-17"+
-at least one SSD to run applications
-8gb+ ram

I'd like a Matte Screen as well. As of know the 2012 Alien Ware laptops seem like the best bet. The toshiba quasmo seems decent as well. I've also looked at a few Asus, accer's, and MSI's. So far it seems Alienware comes the with the best specs and the easiest upgradeability.

Any input from the PC guys?

Just to jump in a bit. I wouldnt even call myself a photographer, but personally i know i dont have a good eye. What im good at (i feel) is the technical stuff. manipulating light, and building the picture i have in my head, rather than trying to capture the beauty i see in front of me, as i just dont seem to be able to see it. If i had the money i would just have a tonne of lighting gear, and build what i imagined in my head. I cant afford that so i shoot basic photos of bikes and cars, but that was basically my take on how you can be a technical photographer with no context, but build amazing images out of technical stuff. Although that is a whole other level to just setting up exposure in camera.

But there would still be context in there cause you're building what is in your head... This is much like what Jeff Wall does for his tableaux images. All of his images are from scenes he has seen on the street/from memory (mainly his earlier work) or from stories/paintings, and he spends a shit ton of time just building the set and lighting it perfectly and months in photoshop manipulating the many many photographs he took of that one set he built to get the image he had in his head...

depends how you look at it, but im not saying there isnt. i was just explaining my approach to creating images, and how i focus nearly entirely on the technical side to construct an image instead of simply capturing the context

Think that question would be better asked here:

Click Me!!

I was doing research into possibly a gaming laptop before i got my desktop, and I would have to agree that the Alienwares are probably the best of the crop.

Not to feed the computer discussion too much, but....

Alienware? No denying the performance, but really? What about the day to day usability? Not the sort of device I'd pick for productivity, let alone anything photo related.

-Super reflective screen
-Absurd and unnecessarily amounts of power
-Absurd amounts of energy consumption
-Absurd power transformer brick the size of a masonry stone
-Annoying loud fans
-Suitcase form factor
-Distractingly fabulous rainbow light-up keyboard, 'grills', and trackpad
-Looks like a 12 year old's wet dream

Just... Uhghg.

Why not keep your better Mac for general/all around use on the the go, and just build an inexpensive gaming desktop for gaming?

Precisely this. it's like wanting a straight line speed car and buying the Koenigsegg ccx. It won't do many things well, but what it will do it does damn well. I would personally rather keep my MBP and do without gaming, but if a gaming rig is what you want, there's no denying an alienware is built for the purpose.

But I agree that a gaming desktop is the way to go. got my MBP for portability and a dedicated gaming machine for the stuff my laptop simply won't handle.

and just FYI the lights are customizable, the less fabulous user can make them all one boring color Wink

Neither of my Macs hold a candle to a highend alienware, the 2012 models come with a matte screen, im not worried about size or weight, it's replacing both a laptop and a computer, easy to upgrade in the future to keep it up to date. I have 0 interest in gaming. From what I've seen the only other computers that are close are some of the eurocoms, and they aren't as much bang for the buck, don't offer as many slots, and honestly they don't look as nice, and if im dropping say 3k on a computer, Looks are an issue. You can also set the lighting to how you want.

For home use I'd be using a different keyboard, and mouse, surround sound, a 27-29" IPS monitor, Drobo and cloud storage. Away from home, I'd still have a 17" monitor and computer fast enough to handle any photo/video editing with ease. I'm wondering if there's any other laptops I should be looking at. The practicality would allow me to have one machine to do a far better job for far longer then 2 computers currently. Please tell me how a mid range 2010 27" Imac compares to this?

If your dead set on a laptop... what about a cyber power model ?

The spec for money is very good, the website has a useful fps counter in popular games against each model and specs are configurable.

I know they have a US site but in the UK they start at £500 and go up to about £2000 so there is something for every budget

Yah they don't actually look that bad! Thanks.

Random street photo. Please critique.

Aside from the abstraction of the value-blocked background, it [the background] only draws away from the portrait. It doesn't provide any context and removes from the texture of the face. If you are focusing solely on the face, do a much closer crop and leave no questions about what the photo is about. With looser compositions, the rest of the frame should add more depth and understanding to the photo if it's to be effective. I feel like you could have found some more 'interesting' light though, to emphasize the texture of his face (if that's what you were aiming to bring out). Flat, shadowy light is great for smooth skin portraits, but for anything else it seems very bland.
That being said, I do like how you've incorporated the similar patterns of his hat and shirt. A straight on shot of mid-chest up, cropped tight, against a contrasting pattern background would've been killer.
Furthermore, it feels like the man is just staring at the camera, a very traditional portrait in that sense. My interpretation of a good street photography portrait is that it should show emotion and life, the reasons you noticed that person on the street.

Not to plug my own photo, but with this man I took maybe 15-20 images where he was just looking at the camera and smiling, and by working and joking around with him, he started to interact with me; not just my camera, and that opened him up for what I feel is a much more genuine portrait of the man I saw on the street. If that helps my critique at all, I hope it makes sense! I feel as though people are innately shy around cameras, especially strangers. It takes work to get them to be natural and personable.

This is more representative of the series of pics I took. The first image is one of the rare photos with no sunglasses.
Thanls for the critique. Much appreciated. On the first image, I like the contrast of the soft face to the hard contrast of the clothes. And he was in the shadow of a column on a sunny day. I did what I could with what I had. But I will keep your advice in mind.
