What to choose between Kona and Marin (hardtail) ?

Hi
I am checking for a friend. He want a signle suspension mountain bike for half trail-riding and half tourist-road-biking with his girlfrind.

What should he choose between :
- Kona Cinder cone 2009, used location, 600$
- Marin Bobcat 2009, new end season 710$ +tx
- Marin Alpin 2009, new end season 600$ +tx

He is 6 feet tall and 225 pounds.
His budget is preferably 500-600$.

I just picked up a 2009 Cinder Cone also lightly used a few weeks ago, havnt fully tested it yet. Seems okay so far, gonna swap a few bits though: bars, stem, 3rd ring for bashring. I'm 6'0 and 165.

For light to mid trail I think its good. For more extreme trail maybe something more built.

Well, I haven't ridden the exact bikes you're mentioning, but I do ride a Marin hardtail ('08 Indian Fire Trail) and I love it, and a lot of people that I know ride Marin hardtails also, and I've always heard good things. I think Marin has their hardtails pretty dialed.
