no bro you dont need alot of money especially now in winter everyone is selling. I seriously barderd with a dumbass a few months ago who didnt know what he had and bought my stinky for $200 yeah and its not a p.o.s its hella good condition just wait and see what the market has to offer. thats what i did and i didnt plan on getting one till this coming up spring. Best of luck.
Ok, here's the low down you have been explained already. $300 will buy someone a good decent bike, for some $300 won't even cover a good wheel (Just one) So a Hardrock is the best thing to start off with. That's what I started with. My girlfriends dad bought one and I like it (If it was my size I'd ride it more often). Fast tires, good fork for the money (It's a tube and spring but what can you expect at that price, good forks start at the $400 range so....) But to start off, that is prime. Screw full suspension, your skill will increase greatly with a ht than a ds so....think about it. With discs you gotta be careful. The disc model is good because it brings a sram drivetrain but what you can do is ride the crap out of it and sell the original brakes and get bb5's or 7's. Better for the adjustments and power. Avid BB5s are the best budget, cable pull brakes in the market so...after you have gained enough skill, buy some components to make the bike better. Cranks would be a great upgrade.
You shouldt save the money you have allready, because if you buy other of those two it doesnt take long when you have to buy new tires, new tubes, new chains, new pedals and so on. Save your money and buy good bike what has better durability than those two. I recommend hardtail, i had one (Jamis Komodo 1 -07, 300€),and it was very good starting bike.
I agree with the used bike idea or get a Specialized Hardrock. I have a 2008 Hardrock Comp and it has served me well. It's a decent entry level hardtail with Avid BB5 mechanical disk brakes and a piece of crap SR Suntour fork, but it works ok for the singletrack I have ridden. Try checking Craigslist too. Or you could look for clearance bikes at a Specialized dealer like someone mentioned earlier.
heres my first mtb had it for almost two years now and its never let me down heres a pic its a p all mountain like sumone stated b4
thats clearly not a p all mtn. its a normal. p. (which is def. better) but anyways, DEFINETELY GET A HARDROCK! cannot go wrong with them. they have a the best drivetrain u can get for the price just get a 2008 or earlier. it will be a good price. (like 300 or under) as long its the lowest end one. thats what i had for a first bike. it served great until it was too small. i had it for 2-3 years didn't ever cost me money. never in the shop with it. then i dirt jumped it and it went to shit fairly quickly. but it worked fine for dirt jumping it, just ruined the bike which wasnt built for that anyways. and dont get a cheap fully. they just teach u to be a hack. u will develop way better riding skills on a hardtail. hope this helps!

ya watch out for suntour. rst seems good enough though, i dirt jumped it and it is impossible to bottom out.
i got really lucky wit my first bike! went to halfords and was talking to an employee and he went out the back and got an 08 boardman team ht should have been €1299 and i Got it for €750 this christmas! its got mix of x9 x7, reba sl, juicy 5's, ritchey and fsa finishing kit, and a really light frame. my point being wait and get an older model oh and save up a bit it will benefit you in the long run, but if you cant wait get a specialized hardrock at least your getting a solid upgradable frame. (check your mbt mags for beginer bike tests!)
