yeah but i mean for my first mountain bike im not looking to go all out with like 700$
700 isnt going all out in the biking world... If I were you I would look into good deals at local shops trying to get a hardtail from 08-09, and save up a little too. I would look into the specialized hardrock or p. all mountain for a first bike, unless you can get a good deal on something else from a local shop.
there is buy and sell option on pinkbike. they have cheap nice bikes. 700 is cheap because people blow 6000+ on bikes. i myself and getting into downhill biking and saving for a narco or big hit. 1000 is what you can typically expect to drop on a bike. if you are doing xc, hard tails are a good way to go. i recommend your first bike be used cuz you get it cheap so if you find you don't like it, you can feel good not spending a ton. also if you huck it off a cliff, you won't feel quite as bad. hope this helps.
my recomendations DH/FR specialized big hit norco shore/ aline mongoose dh santa cruz jackal kona sticky (ugly rear link, but cheap and popular)
DJ/Park/Urban p1, p2 or p3 actually most of these are under 800 on pinkbike
XC/AM giant yukon gary fisher tarpon
if you're still sticking to 300 budget iron horse warrior specialized rockhoppers
300? all out 700? i cried. the best thing you can do with 700 is get an okayish singlespeed. i would recommend a used bike... a hardtail cuz they are better made for the same price. i would shop around for alot of used gear on pink bike and just watch sum how to vids and build your own bike... easy and cost efficient... ABSOLUTELY NO MONGOOSE!!! there only good bikes are $2000 and up. and 700 is a cheapo in mountain biking ... used stuff and save

that's what i'm sayin. used is cheaper and usually has minimal damage if any. and agreed, NO MONGOOSE. their higher end models are ok, but you can't really trust them because they make more huffy bikes than quality bikes. hard tails are good for pretty much everything. also note, when buying a bike, look at components list. more often than not if a bike has higher end componentry, but is by a company you've never heard of probably means it's a good bike. one exception is motobicane which is crappy aluminum foil type frame with good components. if you go to "product" tab on the pinkbike menu, you'll see all the tried and true bikes and components.
anyways, start kinda cheap 400 or so for a hardtail and work your way up. local shops have some of best deals on bikes. that or used bikes off pinkbike, don't use craigslist, that's a bit more greedy bunch. they'll as 600 for something they paid half as much for. good luck
oiy mate, here it is at 150 https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/534061/
i'll admit it's a small frame and v brakes, but it looks fairly new. why would you want a rock hopper any ways? there are plenty of far better bikes at not much cost. p2 for example https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/571697/
it's called a hard rock. you ask for peanuts ya get peanuts.
but if you drop some dough on a new wheelset (never rebuild wheels, they suck) disks, new levers and calipers and then you got a okay bike. what honestly makes you think a hardrock is worth any kind of mention?
that right there is classic example of anal rape. don't buy bikes online. that bike is not worth the 1800 or however much it is in US currency. I don't know about UK, but that is a rip off here. sure the recon fork is nice, but you could do better and for less. (for example mazarocchi 55) local bike shops and pinkbike buy/sell are the ways to go no doubt. I will also swear by pricepoint, but it's only slight discounts off products. no, if you want something good and cheap, go to the local shop and look around. they score awesome deals with companies and get stuff way cheaper than the lazy bums who do internet shopping.
good frame but the fork is sh*t ... look for another fork u could install. people sell alot of old solo air forks on pbike. great deals and i would look for an old p2 frame used
