Before Metallica? Metallica was his first band, then MD.45, then Megadeth.

EDIT: He was also in a band called Panic but I don't think that was before Metallica.

panic was first
he wrote the mechanix (the four horsemen) in that band to took it with him to metallica

and md 45 wasent before megadeth it was a side project in the 90's
