if you want to take nice photos dont be afraid to mess with things. take as many pics as you can and try to use every different setting your camera has to familiarize yourself with what they do and suddenly photography will seem much less intimidating

i got my d5000 not to long ago got a good deal 2 lens and a case for 900 and it shoots in hd video as well

Buy a starter D-Slr.
Buy a wide angle lens (all very well known with bmx photography)
If you want, a nice flash or use the in-built if you go for the D40.
sequences are overated.
Fast shutter speeds, iso varies for the conditions.
If you can get a nice f.stop ect
a good memory card.
Learn to use composition.

ok so my mum has an old vivitar zoom thyristor 2500 flash. looks like this. can d40s use an external flash and if so will this one work and would i need any special cable or anythin to use it?
