I never painted a frame over before, so I'm wondering, my frame is bright Orange on my bmx..if I sand it down completely, what will be the remaining colour ? Chrome possibly ?

No, it would not be chrome. It would just be raw metal... you should clear coat it if you plan to leave it raw, otherwise i think it'll rust (not sure though, but it seems like it would).

Once sanded down, a frame is considered raw in colour. Depending on how you decide to go about "rawing" and how much you do so, there will be different tones of colour. Regular sanding by hand, sandblasting, using a paint stripper method and other concepts, will all expose different tones. Here are some examples:

It is highly suggested to clear coat if you raw a frame. Rust will form very easily if not done so. You can also spray and wipe down the frame regularly with WD-40. It also protects the frame against rusting. How well it actually works though, I do not know.

So if I hand sand it, it'll look like the first image ? And when you say clear coat, you mean what ?

(I never re-painted a frame so sorry, I'm new on the whole painting thing)

the one in the last picture is my bike. i used a wire wheel on an angle grinder, found at some stores for min $20 (cheap ones) and the wheel for another 10-20. i clear coat is paint, but is clear, so you don't see it. it seals up the bare metal so it doesn't rust

The first one is likely done with paint stripper. Don't hold me to it though as I'm not completely sure.

nice post justin99Salute

if i were you i highly sugest using paint stripper. with stock frames it could take days to sand your frame. paint stripper 2 hours max. and if you dont like the finish paint stripper leaves your with(most do thow itl more than likely have a raw flat metal look and u can see the welds). however once you get it down to the metal its realy easy to get the sanded look then since you dont have to go through like 10 layers of paint

depending on how you sand it. i have a habit of sanding mine right down to the bare metal so it is almost like chrome.
