10 26" Bikes That Still Shred the Whistler Bike Park

Aug 17, 2019
by James Smurthwaite
We find the riders who are keeping it real on smaller wheels at Crankworx this week:

Rick's Ellsworth Dare

photo

Rick is a trail builder with Jay Hoots and got this Ellsworth Dare as a 50th birthday present 7 years ago. This is the freeride edition with a longer swinging arm giving 217mm of travel. The paint job and hubs are custom by Ellsworth.

Rick runs a flat bar set up on his Dare.

Nancy's Norco Team DH

photo

Nancy bought this bike 2 years ago from a woman who had fitted a basket to it. Nancy is from Ontario but has had 30 days in the park already this year as she has a condo in the village.

photo
We love the old school graphics on the Marzocchi 888 fork, but Nancy is hoping to upgrade them soon.

Chris's Banshee Darkside

photo

Chris is over from Germany for his first ever time in Whistler bike park. He's fully stoked.

A closer look at the Banshee linkage.

A simple, single speed set up works just fine for Chris in the bikepark.

Logan's Specialized Demo

photo

Logan is up in Whistler for his annual Crankworx trip. He's looking to sell his 26" Specialized Demo so if you have $2000CAD in your pocket, let him know.

photo
Logan has a modern-day Vivid R2C fitted to his Demo.

A red Chromag saddle ties the bike together.

Dan's Cove Shocker

photo

Dan has had this Cove Shocker since the start of the season after it was given to him by the owner of the brand. He believes it was one of the first-ever built and was previously used for testing by a pro.

photo
Graphics, paint and even the cables come together for a Rasta look.

Harry's Devinci Wilson

photo

Harry first came to Whistler last year on a hire bike and enjoyed it so much he decided to come back this year with his own bike picked up on Craigslist. He has been getting shuttles from his girlfriend in Pemberton for the last couple of days before heading over to the bike park this morning.

photo
The 2012 Wilson had some great looking curves on its aluminum frame.

photo
Rockshox don't make the Domain fork any more but it used to provide a more affordable option to the Boxxer.

Brendan's Norco Aurum

photo

Brendan comes to the park five or six times a year for his fill of A Line laps. He has been riding his Norco Aurum for 4 years.

photo

Dan's Stinky Supreme

photo

Dan has had this frame from new and has stuck with it through the years, building it up with parts to suit his needs.

photo
Marzocchi's Shiver inverted fork takes care of suspension duties at the front.

Brandon's Canfield Jedi

photo

Brandon has racked up about 40 Whistler trips on his Jedi since he bought it 4 years ago. He hasn't changed a part since he bought it apart from the tyres.

photo
Canfield were making bikes with idler pulleys before they were cool.

A mixture of RaceFace, FSA and Easton parts make up the cockpit

Johnny's Banshee Legend Mkii

Johnny bought his Banshee Legend for a grand a year ago and has been ragging it ever since.

True... it's just on life support.
  • 48 9
My 3 bikes are 26". 2007 SX Trail, 2008 Stumpjumper FSR and 2010 Voltage YZ. All still running just fine and putting a smile on my face so I don't see the need for a shift.
  • 47 11
@racecase: ...against the best wishes of its family.
  • 11 7
Wait according to pinkbike 26 wheel have no use in the world of MTB. That dark side looks dope btw with the B oxxer.
  • 15 0
 @RafaGamas: I’d love a SX trail.
  • 5 6
@jorgeposada: I mean they don’t really, other than being cool as hell.
  • 10 1
that SX Trail was a bike I wanted so much and a buddy bought one before I could. #unwrittenrules
  • 8 5
I don't know if I will ever go "bigger" than 26
  • 2 1
 @racecase: Haha true Dat!
  • 28 3
@RafaGamas: rode park today with the family, I got heaviest bike on the hill award from the lifties with my '04 demo 9, the Mrs on an '03 bighit (26/24)came in second heaviest, my girls on an '08 reign, the other on a '98 (I think) Schwinn straight 6 with a 26 up front 24 in the back and the 8 year old on a rented Kona garbonzo 2-4. Nothing bigger than 26 in our group and almost as many 24's... Nothin but good times.
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: I agree! Such a versatile and all around, do everything bike.
  • 3 0
@thenotoriousmic: I've got a 2007 sx trail 2 and it is so much more fun than the canyon strive cf race that I had previous, also just bought an 07 demo 7 so thats building my collection

Cotic bikes is the only brand that comes to mind that still makes bikes for that wheelsize. Heck most 2019/2020 bikes don't even have 650b wheels anymore...
One wheel to rule them all is coming back and it is the biggest one!
  • 19 2
@SintraFreeride: there's plenty of 650b bikes in every brands 2020 line up so that's bullshit
  • 9 1
My favorite part is ---- none of them are made of plastic! Oh the good ol' days
  • 3 1
@bstill30: Until you have to pedal it. Loved mine but it really is made for bike parks.
  • 2 0
 All beautiful "26"

@DangerDavez: This comment deserves to be seen lol. Bikes were complete pigs.
  • 1 1
 @jorgeposada: they're cracking bikes
  • 2 0
@Duderz7: Max respect. Love that you're out with the whole family.
My daughter is 5 and my son is 9 months old. Cant wait for the day I get out on the trails with both of them.
  • 1 0
@RafaGamas: SX Trail is a great bike, underrated imo.
  • 2 0
@carbonsinglespeed: it is awesome to have all the kids old enough to go play!
  • 3 0
@Lims26: In 5 years time most brands won't have any 650b wheeled bikes in their lineup that is my prediction.
  • 2 0
@Duderz7: Hahaha, that's awesome. Back in the day, I had a Straight 8 w the 26" / 24" setup. So many good times on that bike!
  • 4 0
@twelve02: I keep telling my kids they're darn lucky that straight 6 is too small for me, or I'd be riding it.
  • 98 36
This article would not really work without an old Kona so propa for that, but you really didn’t need to show an Ellsworth. I mean kids are watching this space...
  • 175 2
10 People who’s prioritize going to Whistler over their bike that works fine...
  • 43 1
@Waki: Beside that Kids can see Rick's Ellsworth they can read your comments on Pinkbike as well and sometimes i'm not sure what's worse... ;0)
Anyway, Rick, i salute you, still riding at 57 is awesome!

@mitcht: There is a guy I see like once a year. He sucks at riding; big time. Last year he had Yeti 4.5, when I met him for the first time, he rolled with his GF, both on flashy Bronsons. This year I saw him on a brand new SB150. And I felt nothing Smile could you be able to feel nothing too? You see, he was chilled and confident. The world is filled with poor souls studying carefully what others have, and people of all incomes do it. But mostly those who have less. And itis those who tend to see having less as a virtue
  • 11 2
Uhm, Cove Shocker, the name itself is X-rated, try explaining that name to your kid!

Damn, who’d have thought old started in your fifties .... boy you gotta an eye opener coming.

@kazwei:

 I couldn't have said it better !
  • 12 2
@SirWonky: why is he a damn fool if I may ask? He is, after all, in Whistler.
  • 1 3
@Bomadics: 2 in the... one in the... They'll find out soon enough.
  • 17 1
@WAKIdesigns: Are you being honest with yourself? That is pretty good memory recall for someone you see one a year and claim to care nothing about. I have a group I ride with at least once a month, get along with well, and I couldn't even tell you what brand of bike some of them are on, much less the model or year.
  • 19 1
@SirWonky: a damn fool who rides park on a bike he digs. And still dropping in at 57. My kinda fool.
  • 25 1
People seem to care way too much about what others are doing........... Some people ride whatever they ride, for whatever reasons they have, and what they do with their money is their own god'damn businesss... your opinion about it is irrelevant....
  • 2 1
 @Luis-Sc: Exactly !
  • 2 0
 @bohns1: ????????
  • 2 0
Having fun no matter what they ride
  • 1 0
@nurseben: I should have written still riding DH at 57 is awesome instead of still riding (like generally) at 57 is awesome. I didn't mean he's old, my apologies if it looked like that but i think he's one of the older rides at a bikepark. Where i usually ride there aren't too many riders 50+ and the older riders i know don't go to the bikeparks anymore.
  • 5 0
I kind of like the old Ellsworths. Kinda funky, and the anodizing was killer!

Nancy is my kind of woman. She has a condo in Whistler.

  • 40 0
@HankBizzle: Nancy's my mom ,but you can come and stay at the condo with us and be my new dad. What do you ride?
  • 61 2
@DJ-24: Sounds like he's looking to ride your mom...
  • 9 0
@fabdemaere: @DJ-24 and that'll be the perfect time to steal his bike.

Iron horse sounds like the heaviest bike ever made.

It's always a pleasure to meet a Jedi
  • 5 0
The Jedi is still faster than most bikes. Funny how people think that 3/4" more stance makes them any better.
  • 8 0
I buy a 10 day every summer and am always on my Jedi. I didn’t realize it was so goddamn antiquated.
  • 6 1
@Rucker10: Only to the hungry bike industry, and those who buy into the hype. Wheel size doesn't make anyone faster (not that it's necessary to have fun), riding your bike does.

Cheers.
  • 5 0
@Rucker10: made my Jedi a mullet w/27.5 on the front (along with 2 of my other 26” bikes). That bike puts a smile on my face everytime I ride it.
  • 17 1
Great to see some good mountain bikes. It's funny that people are beginning to call these classics, even though they're still $3k to almost $8k builds from just a short few years ago. Way to close the door on reality.
  • 18 0
"Nancy bought this bike 2 years ago from a woman who had fitted a basket to it"....i`m sorry, wat?
  • 16 0
There's an older couple near me who have a pair of full on huge hucking freeride bikes - Norco Alines from 2000 and both have all the period gear - stupid big saddle, two chainring chain guide, Hayes Mags and Monster Ts. Both bikes have handlebar bags and they ride them around on the street. No matter the wheelsize, sometimes a bike is just a means of getting around.
  • 8 0
@nouseforaname: there used to be an old dude, about 65 years old, near my kids’ school in Taiwan. He would ride to the shop on a Giant DH bike with an early Dorado wearing his plastic flip flops and coolie hat. The tyres were worn smooth around the middle from hundreds of slow miles on tarmac.
  • 2 0
@nouseforaname: Beats the shit out of a beach cruiser. An older gent in my neighborhood rides around on the street and fire roads on an ancient Giant DH Bike in a full face and pads almost everyday. Whatever floats your boat.
  • 1 0
That sounds about right for those Norcos tbh. I've seen plenty used as city cruisers
  • 13 0
Brings back good memories of my 2014 Devinci Wilson. Sad thing is after all the new bikes I’ve had since, it was still the best bike I’ve ever ridden and I was the fastest on that bike. Even the new Wilson has nothing on the last 26er.
  • 2 2
 This...yea
  • 2 1
I was close to buying one second hand. Stockpiled all the parts upstairs without my wife knowing. I was just waiting for a nice frame to come up second hand in the used section when boom! 27.5 happened and like a bloody idiot I fell for it hook, line and sinker. It killed my Wilson dream because the swing arm on the 275 never did it for me and I moved on to enduro. Shame. I would still like a 26” Wilson for a few days a year in the park.
  • 1 0
I have has two 27.5 Wilsons. One alloy and now on carbon one. Best DH bike(s) I've ever owned, numerous Whistler trips, weekly park sessions here in Colorado. Smokes every 27" DH bike previously owned

Have you even ridden any big bikes with big wheels?
  • 8 0
 @nickel: many
  • 8 0
This. The bike industry needs some 26" play/park bikes again. Going as fast as you can isn't the only way to have fun...
  • 3 2
Yep, as long as its on some maintained, smooth, machine cut courses with packed down berms and jump lips.
  • 3 1
Meh. You can keep your wagon wheel 26. 12 is where the fun is. #striderforlife.
  • 12 2
Damn good stuff. I just picked up a lightly used 2015 Kona Process 167, one of the last mountain bikes anyone made in 26". It's a ton of fun, and the smaller wheels just feel better on steep dh. I kinda wish we had never shifted to 27.5, although maybe in ten years the bike industry will re-release 26" wheels as a new, more agile alternative, or whatever other marketing crap they can cook up.
  • 4 0
I think a lot of people share your thoughts. Many view 275 as a scam to push people over to 29. 26 would offer more of a different ride. It makes sense to kill off 275 and re release 26 in many ways - bike size being another one. It would be cool to see a range of bikes that looked the same in all sizes, but when you looked closely the wheels were different.
  • 3 3
@jaame: 26" wheels would look like cart wheels on any medium size (and more) contemporary bike.
Even 27,5" wheels would look kinda disproportionate on some xl/xxl bikes (just take a minute to figure out Minaar's XXL V10 with 27,5" wheels).
  • 4 0
In reality there isn't much difference in ride feel between 26" and 27.5" wheels because the actual size difference isn't even a full 1.5 inch. I doubt that most riders would even notice which of the two wheel sizes they are on if they just got on a bike and rode without looking at it first.
  • 1 0
@Ttimer: I believe the difference in radius is about 14mm
  • 1 0
@Ttimer: the difference in size is exactly one inch... The native units for rim size (bsd) is inches. Convert 559, 584 and 622 mm to inches, and you get 22, 23 and 24.5" rims.
  • 1 0
@patrick2cents: Thank you. 12.7mm difference in radius then. Less than a pinky finger.
  • 10 0
I love the older bikes, they have so much more character and all ride so different. Still riding a 2009 bottle rocket myself. 26aintdead!

  • 3 4
Bigger wheels don't make anyone faster...or make a more fun ride.
  • 13 3

Probably the coolest Ellsworth ever because that guy seems to like his present and he seems like he'd be the most interesting man on the hill.

I am still riding park on my 2012 V10c. Boxxer with charger damper, RC4, Current Saint drivetrain, 35mm SixC vast and Atlas stem and 2.5 magic Mary's. I can't really think what is going to ride better enough to upgrade
  • 3 0
My daily Park bike is a demo 8 2014 with a single crown totem second bike is a 2017 intense tracer. Both are super fun and special in their own way.
Let’s all remember that pink bikes sole reason to exist is to pander the wares of biking brands selling us shit we don’t really need with a shiny new paint coat every year...
if I had a dollar for every brand new yeti at the park piloted by some jong brake bumping every f*cking jump line...
I notice the best riders are usually not on the latest whip but a year or more old rigs (pros excluded).
Go ride your (fill in the blank tire size bike) and give thanks we have the ability to do this.

Warms my heart to see a Shiver DC, glad to see there are alot of older steeds still out there kicking ass!

Surprisingly no giant glory 8 or giant faith 2007 ,even 2010, neither a ventana el cuervo or a intense M1-M3 , haha someone remembers the awesome Turner Dhr Chris kovarik use to rock in large jumps? Seems that these bikes are saved in somebody's garage

  • 4 0
26, 27.5, 29...who cares. Just ride wat you got. You don't like it, don't ride it. Bikes are rad.
  • 1 0
I really thought that having a ‘floating’ brake setup was the only way I could ride my Stinky without having it buck me like a rodeo horse even time I grabbed the rear brakes. But after awhile you kinda get used to it. So I never did get the floating brake thingamajig!
  • 1 0
The banshee darkside has changeable dropouts for 26/27.5" its like you are saying its a oldschooler. Its not that long ago the last 26" dh/fr frame got produced. 15+ years is oldschool. 4-5 years, no. I have all wheelsizes in my collection 24x3.0" 26"x2.5" 27.5"x2.5 29"x2.35". And switch around. 29" is not any good on my local slower super techy tracks. The 26" still feels way better there. The bigger bike gets to big. There is several places where the bike dont fit around the corner. Steep and sharp turn. I have to stop and bunny. But speedy rockgardens the larger is obviously is better. The larger wheels dont impress as much as the industry is claiming. For me that is. It feels more as a forced investment. I got it because i wanted to see what the hype is.
  • 4 0
I hate that 26” is considered ancient and unworthy anymore by the “in” crowd.

Just go ride your damn bike!
  • 1 0
With my skill and confidence level where its at now I wonder how well I would be on my old 06 specialized big hit 2. I had a totem upgrade and a wheel and bar upgrade. I now ride the same stuff on a 14 slash and feel way faster not to mention I can climb too.
  • 5 0
I remember back in the day, all new bikes were 26inch
  • 1 0
Gots me a 26" Ellsworth Joker with 7" of rear wheel travel. I have a single crown 170 mm Lyrik on it and it makes for a fairly light long travel trail bike. My question, since almost all of you are pros or near-pros, should I morph this bike one more time into a mullet bike? And if so, should I just those everything in the pot, and put on a dual-crown? Even if I don't make to bike parks?
It's a pretty cool bike the way I've been setting it up the last 15 years. It's a fairly good bet that I will continue to ride it as a trail bike.

  • 13 9
how desperate would you have to be to buy a clapped out demo for $2000...
  • 15 0
Desperate, no. Clapped out, no. But 2k for that build is overpriced, kinda like the $15 sunglasses you're selling.
  • 1 0
@NorCalNomad: Yep. Compare it to the Banshee that was bought for a grand.
  • 1 0
There are still 2018 GT's for sale for 1300 CAD. That demo is way overpriced
  • 3 0
massively overpriced for sure, people still think Demos justify a premium for some reason, that thing is three generations old for christ sake (2020 Demo 29, 2015-2019 Demo asymmetrical seat mast, 2015-2016 Demo 27.5, 2012-2015 Demo 26")...

$1,000 would be a generous offer for that bike, more like $800.

Darkside is an awesome bike...they need to stretch the reach slightly, everything else works.
  • 2 0
Agreed, I have 27.5 and it is just so fun and poppy, makes me look way better than I am in the park, but it definitely runs small, and I wished I'd sized up...

Loved my STD I had. Wish I never got rid of it...

 @Ride406orDie: Bro......gross

@Ride406orDie: Yeah that bike was awesome at the time. Cove makes new rear dropouts for the STD to run 650b now although I haven't seen that bike in the wild in forever.
  • 3 1
I run a 27.5 in my 26 inch fox 40 and it rides really well. I've been trying to get dropouts for my shocker for ages to run 27.5 in the back too.

@frednewton: What size tire are you getting away with?
  • 3 0
@Ride406orDie: I'm pretty sure you can remedy that with a night on the town.

 @m1dg3t: 2.4 maxxis high roller 2.

Just out of interest from any PBer in the know please -
What is HA on a Stinky?
What happened to Cove? Where are they at?
  • 25 1
 90°

Cove is still around (ish). They’ve ramped down a lot and talking with the guys at their shop it sounds like there is just less interest in small production steel/aluminum fs bikes, at least in the style/price range that they made them in. The style of riding they were into was always pretty niche and has become even more niche. They make a couple of hard tails that sound like they still sell okay

I seem to remember seeing 66.5 deg somewhere back in the day. Probably with the crowns at max height.
  • 5 0
64.5 degree head angle on that Stinky Supreme... Scored one of those frames for $300 back in 2008; it was a tank but it'd plow over just about anything you put in front of it.
  • 2 0
 Idk about others/older models, but my buddy's '09 Deluxe has a 64.5*
  • 3 1
Damn I really like the neoprene looking stanchion cover on that inverted fork.
  • 5 1
That's how lizardskins got their start. Used to have them back in the 90's
  • 3 1
I´m still not sure how those things do not absolutely wreck your stanchions in any kind of mud.
If any sand gets in there it´s gonna be like sandpaper on those stanchions...
Seems to work for him though. Or he never removed them and doesn´t know what´s underneath...

@Loki87: yeah after a muddy or dusty day u need to take off and clean. It was the 90's tho. Times were tough. Pouring coca cola in your fork to soften your elastomers lol.
  • 3 0
@makripper: I used to use Mountain Dew on my rims to make my brakes work better. It worked great. Until the dust started sticking.
  • 1 0
@makripper: I used motor oil in my Quadra 21R fork to make it move a bit quicker. Boing!
  • 4 0
@makripper and @BeKwik I remember hanging out in the local skate shop in the late 90's as a kid. The dude working there was giving us hooking up with girls advice. He instructed us to pour 7up "down there" and if it bubbled stay away!

@generationfourth: Pretty sure I have the vajine cancer. Did it 3 times, have never been the same since. She said she didn't have any STD's.

 @sewer-rat: That's a work of art.

I'm in that spot right now with my bb7. Freshly rebuilt and I want to make sure that no collectors want it before I thrash it on the dry, rocky, dusty trails again.

 @dylandoe: FairPlay , it’s a looker!! Enjoy it buddy

Banshee darkside is the one for park I might just need a single speed as well since It always seems to most a gear and break cable.
  • 1 0
What??? No nukeproof scalps??? Oh yeah, they're extinct by now seeing as they were breaking before they even got to the customers
  • 1 1
What's funny is that I remember the comment sections from 10 years ago fighting tooth and nail against anything other than 26' for MTB and now 10 years later 27.5 and 29 have well earned their place.
