11 Downhill Bikes From the Windrock Pro GRT

Luca Shaw is on a familiar with some changes in components.

With RockShox using it as a base for their winter testing just beforehand, the Windrock ProGRT has quickly risen to become a mini-World Cup. This year riders from Intense, Canyon, Commencal, Devinci and more have made the trip and there's also plenty of new tech to pore over.

Dave Trumpore and Andy Vathis have fired over a run down of 11 bikes from day one and we'll have more in-depth bike checks coming throughout the weekend.

@jamessmurthwaite I would like to know more about Buck. Does he like scritches on the belly and behind the ears? Does he crane his neck back if you get the nice spot under the collar? Is his bark more of a "ruff" or a "yap" or an "ark"?? What's his favourite mat to get comfy on? Does his tail wag from side to side in sweeping motions, or just a little bit back and forth while his hips rock?
  • + 30
@IamTheDogEzra would appreciate you asking the truly important questions. +1
  • + 34
Can we get a video of his suspension action too? I need to get an idea of the pawbase expansion under load
  • + 58
He’s wearing the same size collar this year, but with an anodized rabies tag that is claimed to be 10% lighter while being 50% stronger. Unlike some of the other dogs in the pits he’s still running an aluminum name tag. He says it’s just less stiff and he likes the compliance in the turns.
  • + 3
I'm thinking the next trail dog video is going to be hilarious. These are the comments of the day.
  • + 2
 Buck is the GOAT.
  • + 2
@Boardlife69: Buck shops at Walmart and eats McDonalds. He also likes to sniff and snort and hides in the shadows.
  • + 3
I heard Buck got hit by a car while training in the offseason. And is now sporting some Ti hips and is loving the extra stiffness in the rear end.
  • + 0
What if buck said “bow wow” and “art art awooos”? He looks like the kind of feller that wouldn’t ask you to hold his beer before sending it. Buck is the goodest boy. Buck doesn’t eat dog food anymore, he just catches squirrels and chipmunks on the trail. Buck once escaped from a Vietnamese p.o.w. camp and taught Rambo how to survive. Buck beat that busch’s beans dog in an eating contest. Buck once raised a family of grizzly bears. Buck wakes up in the morning and pisses excellence.

Side question that I’m just asking for a friend; does excellence burn when you pee? Because my friend might do that too

So Neko went from beer to coffee. Nexts years helmet will be asprin and a bloody mary.

On the right track. Hard nitro coffee. He's a forward thinker
  • + 6
I liked the beer helmet.. too bad it was dropped. I'd like to see more beer sponsors on the WC. Personally I think Mark Wallace in a Lucky Lager helmet would be pretty great.
  • + 2
@kookseverywhere: Arrogant Bastard helmets would rule.
  • + 1
@kookseverywhere: It wouldn’t be a party unless PBR showed up to the game.

I hope that PBR is a popular cheaper than piss choice everywhere and this reference can cross international waters and help nudge everyone a little closer to world peace.
  • + 1
@Hardtailhooligan: Small town BC its Lucky all day everyday. The champagne of northern Vancouver Island. But tonight I'll do my part for world peace and drink a PBR.
  • + 1
@kookseverywhere: look man I really gotta say, you’ve got my interest peaked. I don’t know why but I just love a regions local cheap beer. I’m going to find a way to get this sent to my house if it isn’t around here in Ohio lol. Also I don’t know if this is going to hurt my whole world peace thing, but in the back of my head I really really hoped that a Canadian’s PBR was Labatts Blue. Man that stuff is just delightful, on a hot day filled with dusty trails slinging back a few of those just does ya right. It’s not Christian how damn good they are. Especially the ones that are imported from ya, the Busch plant in Milwaukee just doesn’t do justice to that sweet Pilsner gold.

I really hope I’m not the only one who feels this way lol

We've reached a point that it's now more unusual to see a 27.5 DH bike than a 29er. How time flies.
  • + 8
When i saw the picture of Kirk Mcdowall, i thought he was on 27" wheels. Turns out he is just freaking tall and makes 29" look tiny.
  • + 3
Right? I haven't even got to ride my brand new steed with 27.5"...Oh well I still have my 26" Jedi in the basement if I need that fix...
  • + 3
Also if you notice Mark Wallace’s canyon sender is a 29er.
  • + 1
Not really. Last year it was basically split 50/50 in terms of 27.5 vs. 29s on the podium, and that includes riders that reverted back to 27.5, or choose not to go 29 even when they can.
  • + 39
dont know what scares me more, ENVE wheels or Kenda Tires. hm
  • + 11
 or those ENVE bars...
  • + 15
Even Luca must be worried about quality control when they can't spell M correctly. Or did he get the secret N series? One letter stronger!
  • + 6
Having been in this game for 20 years, I have never understood the Kenda tire hate. I've ran them all. Yes Kenda's aren't quite as jizzy as a Maxxis but the tire wear for a broke ass like myself can make up for a tad less grip.
  • + 4
@sunringlerider: less grip is always worse. when one is suddenly lying on one's face because a tires grip sold me out, I take it super personal.
  • + 3
 @bizutch:
That is a very valid point. I however am too damn slow to push my tires to that point. Hahahahaha
  • + 1
@sunringlerider: I have a Tomac signature Nevegal in 26" if you want it.
  • + 1
 @endlessblockades:
Duuuude. I used to love that tire. No more 26" in my life.
  • + 0
@sunringlerider: It's cuz Kendas grip like f*ckin' plastic, which is also why they wear so slowly. Once I put Kenda tires on my DJ and wiped out TWICE in one 2k ride in the drizzle.
  • + 1
 @sunringlerider: maxxis jizz for grip
  • + 30
Yes!!! The first proper DH race of 2019. Let the season begin!
  • + 15
Commencal by far the best looking. Everything looks so similar.
  • + 4
Agree with you, really nice bike.
  • + 10
Am i the only one that finds it sketchy how the rear axles contact points not actually built into the frame
  • + 2
@endurogan: same here, and that brake adaptor is a bit wonky looking imo (albeit for a larger than normal rotor). Still, the Commie is bike I'd want to ride there.
  • + 2
The V10 is good looking too.
  • + 8
So, any news on what the "Ultimate" designation denotes?. As on Kate's bike check, are we sure it's just another air spring upgrade? Was about to pull the trigger on a Lyrik RC2 a few days ago, but I need to see what's up now! Anyone know when the embargo drops?

Also, Vali's crankarms and shifter seem to be a different design to what was even introduced with AXS, X01 DH refresh?

I hope whatever improvements to the Super Deluxe are retrofittable!
  • + 4
The Ultimate means a new damper, according to Yoann Barelli on IG (post got deleted because of it). As for the air can, it should hopefully be retro-fittable
  • + 7
The “m12” on the reserve rim is actually “N12”. N12 technologies (www.n12technologies.com) is a syndicate sponsor for this year. They develop carbon nanotubes and it looks like they may license it to companies to use in their products. Pretty cool example of trickle down tech born in racing.
  • + 1
Its cool to be using new materials, it just seems to me that the problems with carbon fiber have never really been due to lack of strength.
  • + 4
heh, went to the n12 site, appears it adds toughness, so it could be a cool addition.
  • + 11
Those bolts sticking out of Neko's crown setting my OCD off! Big Grin
  • + 5
One thing that has me curious...there was no explanation behind the reason the Vali had to slam her crowns down all the way, Maybe because YT is putting her on a bike with wagon wheels?? To me, running my gear like that would really mind f**k me.

It would be really interesting for these companies to let the riders try everything. Wheel size conflagration, geos, etc, instead of force feeding them the bikes they want the market to run out and purchase.

It would be awesome to hear what the pros really like instead of the typical canned response that their employers want them to say for sales. Blah Blah rolls over roots and rocks better, stable at speed...but it may be that one person can't control the aspects of 29" bike and geo as well as a 27.5 or a 26" version. Wouldn't you want your rider on the most comfortable they could possibly be on their equipment?

Or maybe I'm way out in left field with my thoughts and there is some magic behind it. Granted I can't talk about 29" wheels and I'm not a pro, but moving from 26 to 27.5 and back doesn't take much to adapt to, but I can get GREAT fits out of either size wheels without altering geometry to one extreme or the other.
  • + 0
29ers are faster, there is no denying that. If it's set up that way, it's because she wants it/needs it that way. If they were forcing her to anything she doesn't want, she could literally go anywhere else. She is the next big champion and any team would gladly take her.
  • + 0
There is no good reason for that girl to be on a 29er. Every manufacturer has said height comes into play with wheel size and everyone who's ridden all the sizes would agree.
  • + 2
@ondrejaugustin: I'm a data guy so you'd have to show me numbers to prove that they are in fact faster. If we're going of speculation, then I can say that it isn't the bike that is faster, it's the rider. A rider could be faster on any wheel size if they're comfortable with it. Bigger wheel size may be better for some things, but they have their downsides as well.

I agree with you that she wants and needs it set up like that. I just was wondering if the reason behind it has to do with the geo and size of riding a 29" bike being and being a shorter rider, if a smaller wheel would better suit.

She could go anywhere. I'm sure there were offers on the table, and YT's offer likely beat out the other potential employers. People forget that this is a career for people as well as a sport. Just like when you and I apply for a job with multiple companies. You go with the combination of offer and lifestyle.
  • + 4
In interviews she has said in the past she was running her bikes exactly as they were given to her, not even cutting down the bars. She said this off-season was the first time she has done testing with expert mechanics. YT makes a 27.5 bike still, so my guess is that she did test everything, and this is what worked.
  • - 1
@tttyyler: Your statement just goes to show that she's really fast; even with the wrong setup.
  • + 1
She chose the 29 over 27.5 check her YouTube channel.
  • + 9
That last V10 looks oh so nice.
  • + 7
that m29 is definitely the best looking as far as I'm concerned. a little unique and cleeean
  • + 4
Lots of racers running the Rockshox Super Deluxe. Goes to show you that you don't need 22 clicks of high and low speed compression and rebound to be competitive. Set your sag and rebound, and go ride! I am curious about that new air can and whether it can be retrofitted to current Super Deluxe models.
  • + 15
Yeah, that’s because they all have custom air cans and tuned dampers. Instead of turning dials they tune the valving.
  • + 4
The mechanics valve the shocks for the riders, but if the stock tune doesn't suit you, you're gonna have to get a custom one and that's going to cost you.
  • + 3
Tristan Lemire put your helmet on straight son! Commencal bikes looking sexy, but not on the same level as the Devinci. Nice to see some smooth, classy colours coming out this year. I'm a fan. I'm a fan of bright colours too but I think they've had their day for the time being.
  • + 3
Not a fan of the new Wilson's look at all. I had their 26" Al as well as Carbon frame (the orange/red/black) and I still think those look better than the new ones.
  • + 1
@krashDH85: they did. That one you had, the 26", I hard out wanted one of those. I actually stockpiled all the parts I needed to build one up. I was looking out for a second hand one in black/cyan when 275 happened and my wife got pregnant with our second kid. The Wilson went out of the window at that time. I've always wanted one though, just don't do enough DH now.
Do you still have your 26"?
  • + 4
Mad balancing skills, how are these bikes standing on their own? I see one moderately sized rock underneath the front tire and that's it!
  • + 2
I got there a couple of days ago to ride and hopped on the shuttle. Realized these guys and girls were on it. Got caught up in rockshox team camp! lol sorry not sorry. I obliviously proceeded to take 4 shuttles with them until I realized there was a separate shuttle for peasants
  • + 5
I'm think the Reign is actually a Glory.
  • + 1
That was my thought... that's a Reign? But I figured I was just a noob. lol
  • + 3
Does anyone here know what kind of protective tape was used on the crank arms of two of the bikes in the article?
  • + 1
I'd like to know this too!
  • + 2
Looks like clear grip tape. The stuff you put on a skateboard deck.
  • + 1
looks like it might be a plastic dip, or bed liner...
  • + 2
Also very curious what this is. I'd imagine it's not grip tape - that'd eat through shoes / ankles..
  • + 1
If you google gun grip tape, that stuff looks pretty similar.
  • + 1
I guess there aren’t many DH lonboarders on here. Looks like Venom Gangster Grip or one of the other more water resistant DH longboard grip tapes to me...
  • + 3
So that is how you make a Reign have rideable geometry! Now I am actually considering getting one, nice!
  • + 4
That paint job on Caroline's Giant/Liv is amazing
  • + 2
The air can on Ethan and Valis super deluxe shocks look very much like the @vorsprungsuspension Corset. My favorite shock upgrade ever!

"Bikes from Intense, Canyon, Commencal, Devinci and more with plenty of new tech to pore over." Surely they meant "porn over"
  • + 1
"Fox have developed internals for the their already existing X2 rear shock that work well with the V10's design."

Would love to know more. Anyone got any info?
  • + 1
OOoooooo!!! So secretive! Now I'm curious about Mark's Sender. No full photos, only a few close-ups, and hints of electronics and secret stuff. What's up?
  • + 3
I want a new DH bike sooOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo bad!
  • - 1
“Introducing the new Santa Cruz Reserve DH wheel, 15% weaker than seen on TV! Own yours today!” I would think that if you were releasing a new carbon DH wheel you’d want to use your race team as an advertising vehicle for proving just how rugged your new product is. This is not exactly a ringing endorsement for the new SC Reserve DH wheels if the race team doesn’t trust the production version. I know often times WC team bikes and other parts are tweaked or customized for the riders, but wheels seem like a golden opportunity to showcase how durable your product is under the hardest riding guys on the wildest tracks...

And no, I’m not an SC hater, I own two SC bikes and have carbon reserves on my trail bike.
  • + 3
Don't see how the team testing a new stronger version of a rim speaks poorly for the standard line? as far as i know they where on the now standard line all last year with no issues i can recall. its called product development.
  • + 1
@nismo325: how do you know we are on the standard line from last year?
  • + 3
 Good luck Ethan!!!
  • + 1
Is that Andrew Shandro's kid? looks a bit like him, the collective was my jam in high school!

 "tech to pore over..."

that title.......jesus f*ck. it's POUR over! can you at least proofread the titles?

unless you're actually talking about tech involving your skin pores.Smile

Pour over is coffee. Pore over means to study carefully.

Why isn't Vali Holl in the Fantasy DH?
  • + 1
I think she is still racing juniors, no?
  • + 1
I believe she's still racing juniors for the UCI World Cup.
  • + 1
@Zaff: I don't this anyone knows. On the HKT podcast Ben Cathro said he thought she was racing elites this year
  • + 1
@Captain1Eye: well that's moustache twirling levels of intrigue!!
  • + 5
@Captain1Eye: I did not good sir. The host said that he had heard she was racing Elite and I replied that I thought she had another year left in Junior. We then discussed that she may have elected to move up. Either was I'm interested to see if she sticks with 29" wheels all year.

  • + 1
Anyone know what that crank protective film is on the YT Tues?
  • + 2
It's on a few off the bikes its looks like. Seems to me to be nothing more than grip tape cut to a specific shape to not cover the main logo.
  • + 2
@LexB: almost looks like truck bed liner applied with some good masking tape to get those sharp lines. To me, Doesn’t have the sand paper look of grip tape.
