One doesn't just drop into Whip-off Worlds... One warms up first. In this case, it was massive trains of dedicated whip artists...including Casey Brown.

Ed Masters - making me proud to be a Kiwi since ages ago!

Ok, who sponsors him next year? So much attention on pinkbike, fun videos, selling the lifestyle like no one else at the moment, effortless. There must be a queue of sponsors in front of his rusty van.

Anyone know what these medical reasons are that prevent Elliot Jackson from racing ?

Also hes gotta be the only black rider on the circuit that I have seen which is surprising as black people are at the top of nearly every other sport out there.
  • 28 10
Asthma ... Didn't realise he was black, just thought he was a rider.

Even if i don't take your comment seriously, you're still racist. correct yourself.
  • 22 2
 you must be blind Smile

Maybe you didn't notice , but it's some thing i have noticed is a lack of black riders in top level DH , which as I said I find strange because black athletes are at the top of pretty much every other sport out there.

BMX , MX , F1 , Athletics , skate and many more have thier top black competitors but not in biking which I just find odd.

Though I do applaud your attempt at being politcally correct by pretending you didn't notice he was black , it's not racist to notice hes not white ya know Smile
  • 8 1
I'm racist ? i'll have to ask my black father and grandparents about that one ...
  • 2 3
I was referring to Ping-Pong comment
  • 2 1
Sorry i misread ping pong comment, just got what he wanted to say. Sorry for the fuss guys
  • 15 0
Apparently if your black you can't be racist?
  • 3 0
Good point that I have often wondered why there are so few - like practically none really - black riders at any level, let alone pro.
  • 4 0
Eliot suffers from Asthma. At world cup events his Asthma was even worst so he decided that it would be be right for his Team Yeti. Let opened the spot for another racer. He has such class and I got to talk with him on a few occasions, he's really sympathetic and all round great person. Nice to see him at Crankworx.
  • 1 0
No nato that was not my point , I mis-understood aSideTeams comment

I wondered the same thing when I was in the States. I saw one black guy in three years out on the trails. He became one of my riding buddies and I asked him the same question on a long drive to Northstar.

He said basically it is about opportunity, and the lack of opportunity trickled down from segregation. He said that it was only a few generations ago that you weren't allowed to play professional baseball or even go into many public parks if you were black. You tend to live a similar life to your parents: they ski, you ski (or board). They ball, you ball. That's why the black athletes are into the sports they are into. He told me he went skiing in Whistler and his family came across another black family skiing - each said to the other "I thought WE were the only ones!"

Also, a quick Google found this: www.theguardian.com/world/2010/may/17/white-people-95000-richer-black
If your family has only assets of $5000, how the hell are you going to afford a $5000 DH bike?

If you are a young talented black athlete and your family has less money, your opportunity comes in getting a scholarship to college. And for which sports are you going to get a scholarship? Football? Yes. Basketball? Yes. Cycling? Nope.
  • 1 0
Good points iamamodel , hopefully these opportunity will become more available for all at some point.
  • 3 0
^^ Yes, and then American companies won't have to rely on British and Aussies to get their bikes on the podium Wink

 haha Big Grin

One of the reasons there aren't more blacks in the sport (and this is speaking as a black person) has something to do with what is popular among a group of people. What is popular too most black people aren't sports like mountain biking, motorcycles, skateboards, snowboards, etc.... Some of the listed have seen more and more interest (skating and motorcycles in particular), but as iamamodel pointed out, most blacks only have role models in more traditional sports.

On top of that, some sports require a certain degree of affluence. DH is one of them. Hell, I know lots of white people that can't afford it so no surprise there aren't a lot of blacks and mexicans here in the states doing it.

But I care less about the color of my skin and more about whether or not my bike is working!

Just a note to the judges for next year, this is a whip contest, NOT a popularity contest. It should be one of the few places an average joe can turn up and win. Stop putting people doing average whips and casing jumps into the final just because they are famous or have tits.
  • 15 0
yeah my buddy victor smith threw this down and wasnt even let into finals........http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/9974096/
  • 6 0
Victor smith should have gotten 2nd but he's not sponsored by redbull....
  • 2 0
 Agree!!!!!!!!
  • 2 0
Agreed! There were a lot of sick riders cut because they weren't pro enough. Riffle was cutting people en masse that were not "Pro" it kinda turned my stomach a little.

Suggestions: 1) Live feed!
2) A pro division and amature divison so the not so popular riders get chance to move on and compete.
3) Better and more organization. It was a gong show up there.

Over all it was the best MTB event that I have ever participated in. So much stoke!
