2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
The 2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash was originally scheduled for June 11th, but a nearby forest fire forced the evacuation of Bend-area homes and ultimately postponed the race until last Wednesday,August 20th. The Blitz is a unique event that features $20,000 in prize money split between the podiums of the timed race plus $500 special primes for holeshot, big air, fastest on pavement and arm wrestling. The race starts up near Mt Bachelor, winds down some of Bend's enduro race stages and snakes through the Tetherow course where the "Big Air" jump is located. From there riders get out on the road for a speed trap and sprint down to 10 Barrel Barrel Brewing Company where the clock doesn't stop until they chug a beer. The event pulls in talent from far and wide and even with the schedule change this year we were treated to some world-class competition. (fire photo: Matthew Lasala)

This shot is a perfect example of what is great about the Blitz it gets riders out of their comfort zone. Tina Brubaker is perfectly happy ripping singletrack and crushing cyclocross courses but she s not a jumper. The past few years she s ridden around the jump and taken the time penalty along with the jeers from the crowd but this year she came determined to jump it. She spent time in practice jumping off to the side of the jump until it became obvious that she had the speed and just needed to let it go. Finally near the end of Tuesday s practice she announced I m going to do it.

ANATOMY OF A JUMP

Lev Stryker and Henry Abel enjoy cruising on their Calfee MTB tandem on the Upper Lava Flow trail at Mt Bachelor Bike Park with the Three Sisters and Brokentop mountains in the background
The story within the story here was certainly the talk going around that Henry Abel and Lev Stryker wanted to jump a tandem over the Blitz jump. What sounded at first like a social media fantasy became reality when we found out that Lev and Henry were serious and planning to go to Mt Bachelor to get some training in. It was late in the day so we could only get in a few runs. Here Lev and Henry enjoy cruising down Upper Lava Flow as they get used to riding together with the Three Sisters and Brokentop Mountains in the background.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
In no time they were flowing down the trail and feeling good with the tires on the ground.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
It was time to go to the small skills park to test some airtime.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
The first few landings were a little sketchy until Lev and Henry got used to pre-loading and yanking at the same time.

Then it clicked. They came over in sync and landed both wheels together.

Lev Stryker and Henry Abel prepare to jump this custom Calfee Design carbon and bamboo tandem off of the much larger Blitz 2 the Barrel jump in a few nights
In just a short time they were feeling confident for practice the next day.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
At the race venue our daredevils check out the setup. Things are looking good with the jump a little shorter this year, but it seems to have a steeper landing than expected.

Lev and Henry then check out the roll-in before the drop. "This is harder than the jump", says Lev.

They do a few test-runs to see what the landing looks like from the takeoff.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
There was a lot of discussion of what to do.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
In the end the two decided that this jump may not be the best idea right now.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
Stoker Henry Abel, however, wanted it so badly that he started looking for volunteers. Kids, anyone would work...

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
Henry' confidence level was increasing with each pass off to the side of the jump. Emmett Reeb along for the ride

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
He ditched all riders and became more determined to do this as practice was coming to a close.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
Henry came to look at it again...

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
And Boom! Henry followed Carl Decker to get a good feel for the speed needed and busted it out solo.

2014 Blitz 2 the Barrel Dash For Cash
Henry was feeling it now, but this was alone, with no extra weight on the back. As the race rolled around there was a buzz about the tandem. Would they jump? Who would stoke and who would steer?

When the tandem rolled into the Tetherow jump area it was clear that the original team with Lev steering and Henry stoking was going to bust this jump out in front of a crowd with no practice. Lev Stryker & Henry Abel made a beautiful jump on the custom Calfee Design tandem with an Ellsworth rear end and stunned the crowd.

Seems like an awesome event! Well done all. as an aside... Some good cash on offer, it makes you realise how poorly funded the big media events are. 3K prize here vs a 'measly' 25K for Joyride etc, when the risk and exposure levels are so very different.

Now we just need to see someone WHIP OR FLIP a tandem! ;-)

Now if only I can learn to "preload and yank at the same time" I would catch on to this new sport.

"In true enduro fashion Rosara Joseph, Kelli Emmett and Linsey Voreis take the inside line through this un-taped portion of the course."

This sentence is ridiculous. Seriously: stop calling everything Enduro.
  • 1 0
How would you like that caption to read?
  • 1 0
dunno, cross country maybe...just keeping it real.
  • 3 1
@ThreadKiller - Maybe sentence should read... ""In true enduro fashion, these outdoorsy oregonian arm wrestling ladies take the inside line through this un-taped portion of the course, showing they have little to no regard for: dusty flowers, crisis the middle east, grumpy trail builders, fallen over dead logs, Pinus Strobus seedlings, endangered high desert baby snails, anything vaguely green or the generally the natural world around them." But, that's kind of wordy I guess.

I'd like redbull rampage to add a tandem category ! pretty-please!!!
  • 4 2
enduser - I meant to give you props, but hit the red button instead. my bad. I'll admit that I'm somewhat anti-29 (I know they're faster) but gosh I just can't get used to the look of them. you'd need to be 6'6" to make them look normal.

Crazy! Especially the solo tandem jump! i do not get how he did not get totally nose heavy on that!
  • 1 0
I was thinking the same thing. I would guess he was cranking off that jump to keep the nose up longer? Mad props to him!

Even if he was.....it doesn't work in my head!

I demand a video of that tandem drop...

Damncamm there is plenty of merit, he lived at my house and I rode bikes with him. The douche is the man arm wrestling woman.

This is Some Kinda Asshattery!! I see several ghost profile posts from cowardly fools hiding behind fake monikers. Zoe Taylor is a close friend of mine and I will not stand by and watch a couple fools treat Her like this on a public forum. Jumpybumps seeing how you two were friends at one time, I am ashamed at your public display of hatred! I know who you and your other friend are. I also know that you both would be upset if you were publicly shat on by someone who you allowed too close. I think you owe Zoe appologies for being a brat. I know you are not mentally strong enough for such tasks but I will offer up that chance to redeem your merit as a decent human. Otherwise Pissright-off, bring it to the East side and take it to the Trail.... my name is Nicholas Dumas.... I wont hide behind a veil to defend my friend. Cheers!
