2014 Photo of the Year - Round 2 Voting

Feb 18, 2015
by Pinkbike Staff
We gave you the top 32 images from 2014 and you've voted for what 16 images have made it on to round 2 for the 2014 Photo of the Year. Now it's your turn to narrow it down even further for who'll be vying for the $10,000 in CASH as well as $20,000 in prizing from our sponsors: Specialized Bikes and SRAM.

Check out the voting page

The 4th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest voting is underway. The winner will join John Wellburn, Toby Cowley and Sterling Lorence in the PB Photo of the Year Hall of Fame and they could walk away with $5,000 and a Specialized Enduro 27.5 kitted with a full SRAM groupo.

How Does it Work?

From thousands of nominated photos, 32 have been selected to pit against each other in a college basketball bracket-like showdown. At this point it is up to you, the users, to vote on the match ups. The photos with the most votes will move onto the next round. So 32 photos will narrow down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there is a single photo deemed the 2014 Specialized Photo of the Year Powered by SRAM.

Specialized 275 Enduro
Who from the top 32 will be taking this beauty home: a Specialized Enduro 27.5 with full SRAM build kit.

I ve taken a ton of photos over the past few months a countless number of which I am extremely proud of yet this photo of Jared Graves out for a training ride in Nevados De Chillan may be the one I would place at the top of the list. Not only is the photo beautiful so much so that you almost don t notice Jared bar dragging through the corner but the entire experience of this location the trail and the time of year is something I will never forget. Chillan at the height of fall with all the vibrant colors popping was simply breathtaking.

It s just ticked over 100 days of no rain in Perth so cornering at mach chicken turns out a bit like a Michael Bay movie. Shooting wide open at f 1.4 was a bit of a gamble but it paid off

To me this shot helps to show how in control top guys like Troy are with being almost out of control. They ride that super fine line between total disaster - and spetacular speed and success. I think the level of commitment and compensation with body position that is required to ride out sketchy situations at ridiculous speed is evident here.

It took about a year before I could get the right conditions to take this picture. Then two hours driving from Rome thirty minutes of attempts and 27 seconds of exposure to catch the beauty of the Milky Way while my brother s bike was marking the landscape with its front light. Less than a mile away some campfire and night partying was taking place in the woods resulting in a distant and misterious orange halo.  you guys are crazy, that dark kamloops picture was incredible. it didn't have to use multiple exposures, yet you could still tell where the rider was. it gave you a sense of there is nothing but the trail, and it had incredible serenity to it. my favorite picture of this whole competitions. much better in my opinion than the Grave's picture, althought the picture of Grave's is cool, as it has that old tree as a feature to support the berm, idk if its as great of a picture.

I also voted Krabbe, but didn't he win last year?
  • + 4
with a picture like that, he can win every year.
  • + 2
That was one of the more difficult choices for me last round. But the Chilie picture wins because that shit makes me want to be there.
  • + 1
 Preach!
  • + 4
Maybe the voters thought it was overplayed a.k.a. a type of shot that has been accomplished many times before in the powdery soft dirt of the Kamloops. That doesn't make it any less amazing but did you really expect that to be the best photo or top 3 at least? As sick as that shot is, in my opinion, it doesn't compare to many of the shots in this year's contest. It may have been better in that round but overall it was nothing insane. Its going to be a hard contest to judge.

I love the night shot though, although its done a lot, i love the nice clear skies.

Why did hunters Shot Win,the other is way cooler with all the dirt flying around
  • + 1
And why did overbeck lost, that was poy
  • + 10
Sterling Lorence / Hunter is the original, I voted for that one to also give them credit for idea and effort.
  • + 4
+1 @TFreeman As pretty as Dave's shot is, I think the light play in Reuben's is much more unique. I don't think it's overplayed at all. Dust shots have been done before of course, but the way only the trail is lit here is amazing. I honestly thought it was top 3 material.

Oh well, they're all incredible photos so whichever wins it's going to be well deserved.

I would agree - I thought Krabbe's photo was the best of the whole bunch! Was pretty disappointed to see it dropped after the first round.
  • + 11
 Thanks y'all.
I'm taking notes for next time. Does this encapsulate? www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnoqLtJbjcI

Krabbe is my favourite mtn bike photographer on PB. He's always posting inspiring photos that tell stories and reflect the reasons people enjoy the sport so much. Keep up the great work Krabbe.

Laue ftw. With the prize money he can buy another vowel for his last name. But seriously, laue has the best photograph.
  • + 10
Hahaha, thank's man :-D Thank's everyone for voting.
  • + 1
best composure i have ever seen. can't imagine how hard it is to get that photo.
  • + 1
Lauie? Laiue? Liaue? or really mix it up, Layue? Lauey?
  • + 0
Just looking at the picture I get butterflies imagining the feeling of that drop. It's a powerful image.
  • + 2
That shark fin is filthy. You capture the train and surroundings perfectly. Definitely my favorite.
  • + 1
 Thanks
  • + 16
how the hell can you chose between matt hunter and danny mcaskill !! i really would have preferred those two photos to be matched later, this is too early
  • + 3
totally agree - they are 2 of the strongest pictures for me overall - and already one of them has to go. Shame
  • + 2
My thoughts exactly!!! They should both go through, and as a trade off the 2 photos from matchup 5 should go. Neither of them are THE photo of the year for me, Matt Hunter's and Danny Mac's could both well be!
  • + 2
Yeah, this one was tough for me as well. Both are incredible images and both include equally awesome, creative, universally liked riders.
  • + 5
I haven't had to make this many difficult decisions since I had to choose the top five riders in Rampage in the correct order. Shit's impossible...
  • + 3
Dear Pinkbike, please put through both photos from Matchup 8, and in return take both photos from Matchup 5. Sorry, but both Danny Mac's and Matt Hunter's could well be The Photo Of The Year. That match could be saved for the final. Cheers
  • + 6
Damn, the riffstills photo of Dylan was my favorite
  • + 2
How the hell are we supposed to decide among all of these?? Normally when voting, at least in politics, I have a hard time deciding because all of the options suck so hard they make me want to drive my car off a cliff while blasting U2... But now all of the options are so spectacular that I still can't decide.
  • + 4
Nailed the popular vote on all but 1. Its ok that 8.5% of you were wrong.
  • + 2
www.pinkbike.com/photo/11479400 can't believe this got eliminated. one of the coolest shots I have ever seen.
  • + 1
How strange, apart from 2 exceptions I always had the winning choice on the left side and the losing choice on the right side in round one!
  • + 2
You guys should post the location where the shot was taken under each photo! I kinda want to travel at every spot. Smile
  • + 3
I pick all of them. Oh wait we can't do that....Crap!
  • + 1
Gotta be Sean Lee for me.... Not enjoying the Sterling Lorence one too much, looks too forced and kinda unnatural
  • + 2
