2014 Photo of the Year Winner is...

Mar 2, 2015
by Pinkbike Staff
Christoph Laue's Winning Image for the 2014 Specialized Photo of the Year Powered by SRAM:

It s all about the moment in sport photography - Photo Christoph Laue

We gave you the top 32 images from 2014 and you've voted for the winner and ultimately the 2014 Photo of the Year, whom will be divvying up the $10,000 in CASH as well as $20,000 in prizing from our sponsors: Specialized Bikes and SRAM.

Check out the voting page for all the results from each bracket.

The 4th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest is a wrap and Christoph Laue will be joining the ranks of John Wellburn, Toby Cowley and Sterling Lorence in the PB Photo of the Year Hall of Fame.

How Did Photo Of The Year Work?

From thousands of nominated photos, 32 were selected to pit against each other in a college basketball bracket-like showdown. At that point it was up to you, the users, to vote on the match ups. The photos with the most votes moved onto the next round. So 32 photos narrowed down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there was a single photo deemed the 2014 Specialized Photo of the Year Powered by SRAM.

Specialized 275 Enduro
Christoph Laue will be taking this beauty home: a Specialized Enduro 27.5 with full SRAM build kit.

What all was at stake? $10,000 Cash and $20,000+ in Prizing

Christoph Laue will receive a Specialized Enduro 27.5 complete with the newest SRAM kit and a check for $5000
• Sterling Lorence will receive a check for $3000
• Robb Thompson and Sean Lee will each receive a check for $1000

New for this year, a prize pack for nailing the voting:
The user that votes the closest to the correct bracket could win a SRAM X01 Drivetrain (crankset, cassette, chain, shifter, derailleur and an X-Sync direct mount chain ring)
*if multiple users have the same voting brackets, then a random draw from the matching users will be drawn

Thanks to Specialized Bikes and SRAM.

Competition was crazy, but this one is well deserving. Congrats, it was one of my favourites from the beginning.
  • 31 4
I agree! I'm happy this picture won.
  • 11 3
had that picture as my background for months now! Glad to see it win!
  • 29 5
the beauty of this shot is it would almost be impossible to reproduce!!
  • 4 6
Second (or i guess 5th) on the fact that this was well deserved! Good job on voting everyone.

impossible to reproduce? It's just three riders going down a hill, one off a lip.
  • 39 1
A chance shot of the lead rider pulling a clean table off a 10 foot high hip with the landing out of view, seen through an arm/bar/torso viewfinder of the third rider just approaching the transition, complimented by a middle guy pre-loading for the launch up on the ramp really sum up some of the many good moments that can and should happen when you go shred with friends. I feed on this triple photographic capture; of the anticipation, then the focused dead silent expectation of radness, crowned with big air style!

so do the riders get credit for this? i mean a share of the loot? they better be coz without them u just have dirt and trees
  • 11 4
Congrats! The best picture actually got the win. Well done laue, enjoy the proceeds!
  • 4 4
www.pinkbike.com/photo/11479400 this photo went up against it in the first round and gave it more competition than anything else. This shot is sick and congrats Christoph on the big win but man @riffstills should have had it.
  • 3 1
@mfbeast12 Completely agree, and I voted for it too Smile
  • 4 1
@viatch without photographers the riders get no publicity, no sponsorship, no wage. So it's good to see the guys that usually get no glory earning some publicity and cash rewards
How do you think we get these awesome pictures? It's from dudes riding the same shit the pros ride but with camera packs and all the shit that goes with it. Usually on bikes and kit that they have had to buy themselves
So no, the riders shouldn't get any reward, they already get paid/sponsored etc
  • 1 1
And I also agree with @mfbeast12 that those two were the best pictures and should have been finalists together

attention @eddardstark40 , otherway Joffrey will cut your head off

Really incredible how much luck and skill is needed to capture exactly that perfect moment.

Downvote me if you want, but I think that we need to have an amateur photo contest. Christoph and Sterling are both professional photographers. I would be more interested in seeing amateur photographers winning prizes for their shots.
  • 41 4
Good luck certifying who's an amateur and who isn't.
  • 12 5
Probably a safe bet that the guy with the really professional website and portfolio is a professional.
  • 4 2
That is a great idea, maybe pinkbike can have a category for photographers who do not use their work for commercial purposes or something to that effect ( and maybe offer a smaller prize). That being said, Laue is a deserving winner for sure.
  • 15 4
Maybe we should have a parallel dh world cup for non pro riders on second hand bikes under 2k with pre 2012 parts... Naeee, too boring. FMB series for trolls - that would be fun to watch
  • 3 1
The amateur competition could be taken with cell phones as opposed to state of the art cameras and equipment!
  • 3 1
Every year the poy has been around someone cries that they used fancy cameras to win. Duh! It's a photo comp. Submit your cell phone pics, the comp is open to every one. Save your pennies and buy some camera gear. Between Keh and Fred Mirranda you can snag old pro gear for not a lot of dough. You have to start somewhere.
  • 5 2
You guys all bring up fair points, but there are plenty of amateurs that have pro gear, shoot great photos, and don't make a dime off of them. I want to see those photos in a contest instead of a bunch of shots used for commercial purposes.
  • 3 0
Do "professional photographers" even make that much money? As much as it is dope seeing amateurs win......
  • 34 1
This was my favorite photo since I first saw it, I want a massive print to hang on my wall
  • 9 2
Absolute inspiration shot. This whole set of photos in the contest were amazing. No losers in this bunch.
  • 19 2
Such a great year. Such a great photo. Congrats Christoph Laue!
  • 14 0
Pic sums up, out the bike with your mates, having fun in amazing scenery perfectly. That's what mountain biking is to me. Also amazing photography for the timing and to get it all so sharp
  • 14 1
Speaking of contest winners I need some advice from people on here. Recently in last few months I won a contest a pro rider was having on social media. I do not want to mention the rider. I do not want to even give hints. I do not want this rider under any scrutiny as I still have massive respect for this man. But I never received the product I was suppose to win and I really was looking forward to it. I don't want to be a jerk and contact him about it but it looks as if it was just forgotten. Shit happens and I know he is a pro and busy but still I was looking forward to the product because it was an awesome product. What would you guy's do? Should I just leave it alone?
  • 31 6
Nope, hold that guy accountable... Just email him to death... Then call him out if he refuses.
  • 29 1
Nah, just ask nicely and respectfully. Compliments and respect go along ways in situations like that. Be sure to share your excitement for the item and that you don't in any way intend to give the wrong attitude. "Just following up brother!... " kind of thing.

Great attitude by the way!
  • 13 2
Thanks, I hear you guy's. I am sure he won't refuse. I know he is a very very busy rider and it's probably just forgotten. Having this product on my bike knowing it came directly from him was going to be one of those things that would just truly stoke me out. I just don't like to be the kind of guy that emails someone and says "Hey, where's my free shit." I didn't want to come across as demanding or ungrateful. Sounds like I should send a polite follow up message. Hope he even checks his messages. Thanks guys
  • 14 0
He's the one that was holding the contest. If he wants to self promote by giving shit away then he should stay on top of it,not get peoples hopes up that there gonna get something that never comes. That's a bum move no matter who you are.
  • 7 0
 Just go with something along the lines of;
Hey mate, I won that facebook competition thing x-months back, haven't had anything turn up, just wondering what the story is, cheers.
  • 18 4
Isn't it spelt cheque ? Not check ?
  • 18 1
 In proper English, yes
  • 5 1
Clause for not paying the money?
  • 7 14
flag seraph (Mar 2, 2015 at 16:45) (Below Threshold)
In American English it's spelled "check".
  • 5 1
Not if they're paying him American money. Smile
  • 22 5
There's no such thing as British or American English, there is English and there is wrong.
  • 3 1
*should probably have put a smiley there so I don't upset anyone...
  • 3 1
I was about to say pimpin - move to Canada from the UK and have the bank tell you you spelled cheque wrong. It happened !
  • 3 2
Well replied pimpin gimp ,English is English not Engerican !!!!!
  • 4 3
@pimpin-gimp - there is most certainly such thing as American English. Otherwise there would be no logical explanation for the way we spell things over here.
  • 3 2
logical explanation = you cant spell in English !!!! Now that is all one would like to hear of said matter .
  • 2 2
Theres for sure is american English. The shit we say.. My god you'd never understand. Just because you're on the other side of pond doesn't mean everything is the same.
  • 3 2
@treekilla ,No I agree that not everything is the same here as is in the USA although your language you speak is English and the clue is in name .If you refer to your first sentence of your post then surely you will agree that the English grammar you used does not make sense ,Therefore I am right and you are most certainly wrong .dat is dat bra init.
  • 1 4
@jammy2bad - just because he used incorrect grammar doesn't mean he was using incorrect English. Get the cricket bat out of your ass and move on.
  • 5 1
Christ Alive, you yanks really don't sarcasm do you? I'm well aware that you have what you call "American English", what I wrote was an attempt at British humour, hence "*should probably have put a smiley there so I don't upset anyone..."
It's true though, you just took our language and broke it. Oh shit, I did it again, please don't be upset.
  • 2 1
@seraph How on earth did you know that I had a cricket bat up my bottom ? Surely you are psychic .You should try it one day maybe with a baseball bat , Just to add it is English grammar ,Now will you please admit defeat and leave me to eat my crumpets and drink my tea whilst watching HRH on the television .Thank you....
  • 2 1
@pimpin-gimp ,my sentiments exactly .I love a bit of sarcasm and the fellas on here just aint getting it are they ! Funny as f*ck though .

  • 4 1
When this photo first came out I commented below it that it has a big chance for being the POY. And then.... Although there were some other photos in the contest which I liked more.
  • 2 0
I will admit it is not my favorite photo (subjective) but it is an excellent photo and a credit to the photographer (objective) Out of the final 4 this is definitely the one that deserved to win, well done.
  • 3 0
A few seconds after this shot was taken back in July I remember thinking, 'this could win POY.' Great to see it end up on top. Congrats Christoph, such a rad shot!
  • 1 0
this remind me a lot of the PB VOY contest between matt miles and danny macaskill. so much money and time went into the making of dannys video. it was amazing but i think a lot of of us felt that its was missing the freedom and spontaneous character that the matt milles video had. too much went into the Hunter picture, it wasnt forced but it wasnt natural. so stoked the Laue's photo won!
  • 3 2
Yeah ! This picture is awesome, i was secretly hopping from the beginning that this one would win Smile . It's a fantastic picture, very difficult to take, the timing is just perfect !
Well deserved !
  • 5 2
so glad this one won! all were insane photos, but seriously pinkbike ***cheque*** not check...
  • 3 2
Best choice ! Dynamic picture mixing jump ride and subjective vision of the scene from the third biker's cockpit ; all finish in the air like a "base-jump..."
Congratulations Christoph Laue ! Smile
  • 6 2
 Check the spelling of cheque!
  • 2 8
flag seraph (Mar 2, 2015 at 16:48) (Below Threshold)
It's spelled "check" in North America.
  • 9 2
In Canada it's "cheque". But like so many other things here, it transforms into a bastardized American version.
  • 10 1
we love to bastardize all over the world.
  • 2 2
Seraph I see your frustration, its check if you're checking something out but when winning a cheque.. yeah that's that
  • 2 2
No, it's "check" either way. It's not called a "chequebook," it's called a "checkbook". Firefox spell check underlined the former, but not the latter.
  • 8 4
I was so sick of seeing that other pic in every magazine / every page

Does anyone know where an even higher resolution of this photo is, maybe even the original? I'd love finding a way to put it on my wall.

best thing is to go direct to the source

Contact the man himself and im sure you could come to some arrangement, i would offer some cash though

Funny that the Bracketology reference was to BASKETBALL rather than comparing it to our own DUAL SLALOM bracket system. Either shows the disconnect from our sport and the internet or the continued Descension of DS.
  • 5 3
The prize should be a Scott and not a Specialized.
They got some serious advertisement right there. Big Grin
