2017 EWS Finals: Finale Ligure, Italy - Race Day 1 Photo Epic

Today over 500 riders took to the hills way above Finale to tackle three of the most physical stages we've seen all year. With countless blown out switchbacks, too many rocks to keep track of, and the fatigue from two days of training starting to take its toll, for many it was a battle just to survive. Only the strongest riders were able to push on every stage from start to finish.

In the women's race, Cecile Ravanel certainly had no trouble as she once again took the lead on Stage 1 and never looked back. Even with the title wrapped up she isn't backing down in the least and ended the day 1-minute 12-seconds ahead of Isabeau Courdurier. Giving chase was Katy Winton who mathematically could overtake Isabeau in the overall standings. The two started this weekend almost equal in points and both will be charging hard—they are the ones to pay attention to during tomorrow's final day of racing.

For the men, it was Damien Oton who took two convincing stage wins to top the leaderboard ahead of the two men fighting for the championship. With Sam Hill just six seconds back in second place, his fight for the title is looking stronger by the minute, but he can't afford to relax one bit tomorrow. Hot on his heels in third is Adrien Dailly who desperately needs to win here to keep his title hopes alive, but with a long 12-second gap between him and the top of the leaderboard, he will have to ride out of his skin on Sunday. However, if Hill should have any kind of trouble such as a mechanical or crash, Dailly is positioned perfectly to take full advantage.

Does anyone know what happened to Rude? 30th? And poor team Specialized. Have they actually finished a race without any mechanicals this entire year?

I don't get it, Keene had a flat so he exit the race? he then gives Graves his der? Surely he had a spare tube...why didn't he repaired his flat and kept racing?
  • 4 0
@eeeasy: Graves is still not bad in the overall so Keene gave him is shifter. After that it was almost impossible for Keene to finish the race in the 10T cog (think about liaisons, steep hills in the stages, etc.).
  • 2 0
@eeeasy: He came back from injury if I am not wrong. Maybe he just didn't feel it and decided to end the race earlier...
  • 2 1
@eeeasy: maybe he sliced it up badly

@eeeasy: probably broke his wheel, which they can't swap out

I wonder how much better the Specialized team would have done if they were on a decent set of tires. I bet if you looked at the stats, the per capita incidents of flats versus the competition would be outrageous.
  • 5 1
Graves had pretty decent results yeah, pre big S on Maxxis tires with ghetto setup I don't remember him getting flats and crashing so much either!

How can you brake a shifter? Can someone please explain it to me? Is it from a knee contact or from a crash? Last time i do a damage to my shifter was from my bike sommersaulting and hit a rock from an OTB incident. While Graves jersey didn’t show him being in a crash.

Jared's thumbs are as strong as your thighs. That's my explanation.

"After a crash Miranda Miller rode the day with handlebars that kept rotating, despite the bolts being plenty tight". Yep, I've got the same bars and stem and mine have been doing the same. It's good to know that even a world champion can't get those things to stay put.
  • 2 0
Same here! Cost me a decent result at a race too! Have ditched the stem and put a Hope one on, no problems now! Love the shape/feel of the bars though!
  • 2 0
@chrisall: I know, right? The bars are just so perfect, it’s just that stupid stem. I’ll be going Hope too on the stem as soon as I can afford to pay out more money on the bike. For now it’s back to my chunky RF Atlas stem.

Epic coverage. I wish the coverage was like it is on UCI DH. I would love it if I could time in to redbull TV and see some live action. It would be a long day though.

Not great year for either the 2016 DH mens champ or 2016 EWS mens champ.... I think the only guy to have a good year in 2017 was Sam Hill
  • 5 2
Um what about gwin? Loic? They had pretty good years. Troy brsnan?
  • 1 0
@russthedog: He's talking about Danny (STAY ON YOUR BIKE!) Hart and Richie (V10) Rude as the 2016 World Champions not previous World Champions or World Cup overall winners.
  • 1 0
@OriginalDonk: hill wasnt a champ in 16, and lots of people had a good year so it doesnt make any sense?
  • 1 0
@russthedog: You seem to be having trouble identifying the object in @deiru's post? Not a good year applies to the 2016 Champs who were Richie Rude EWS and Danny Hart (DH). He never said Sam Hill was a champ in 2016. He's saying Sam Hill had a good year in 2017 because he just won the EWS. You could say Loic and Gwin had good years, so did Adrian, but I don't think he was looking to call out everybody who did well. My guess is he was pointing out that the 2016 Champs had tough seasons.
  • 1 0
@OriginalDonk: thank you for the assistance. I am, however, still stumped by the words "the only guy to have a good year " - seems exclusionary?
