2017 Sunshine Coaster XCM/XCO Is Almost Here

May 2, 2017
by Sunshine Coaster XCM
We don't have to say that it's been a really crappy winter and spring for training and maybe you're not in the best of shape compared to other years, but we have a solution to kick off your riding season with a bang. Join us on May 13th when the Sunshine Coast mountain bike community will host the 17th annual Sunshine Coaster, held in the forests behind Sechelt, B.C. We have a new format this year being part of Cycling B.C.'s B.C. Cup series in the cross-country marathon and Olympic distance disciplines. Our amazing sponsors have been instrumental in providing amazing support with prizing and cash awards for the winners of each category.

Almost every weekend since the "big snowfall of 2017", we've been hosting trail days to get the trails ready for the race. No thanks are necessary—we love what we do! The Sunshine Coaster has always been about our local mountain bike community putting on a race. It has never been a flashy race with a ton of prizing or cash, but it's always been about having fun in a low key (some say "organic" feel) event where our community extends its welcome to other mountain bikers coming to the Sunshine Coast to ride our trails. At the race, you’ll see us smiling, giving you directions, pointing you in the right direction, constant cheers and shouting words of encouragement to help you dig deep into that reserve you never thought you had. Each marshal, registration volunteer, sweeper and many others have a story to tell about their latest trail project or bridge they fixed up or places they are thinking of visiting this summer.

We all have that mountain bike passion in common and this race is about these everyday riders getting together in creating, building bridges, brushing, raking, tamping and armoring our trails for you to have the best possible racing experience. The organizers couldn't have put on this race without this dedicated army of volunteers. Thank you to the Sunshine Coast United Mountain Bikers, the B-Team Coast Chapter, Sunshine Coast Cycling Club! We are humbled by your amazing dedication to the event.

Online registration will close on Thursday, May 11th at midnight. On-site registration is available on Friday evening and Saturday morning and will be cash only, only taking place if space allows, so you’re better off to play it safe and register online. We will take your cash on race day but we’ll charge you an extra $20 for making us do more paperwork. For your $75 entry fee, we include a bbq and a beer after the race. We may have extra beer available for cash—it depends on the registration numbers. The gun goes off at 10am precisely.

2016 Sunshine Coaster Start line

On Sunday, May 14th, we invite you to stick around and join us on one of the four guided rides we are offering on the Coast; Sprockids, Kinnikinnick, B&K, and Halfmoon Bay. These are by donation and all proceeds will go to the local clubs who build and maintain our trails. Rides will be classified according to kids, or XC. We invite you to join us for a beer after the Sunday rides at Gibsons Tapworks to celebrate. Kids are welcome there too. Pre-registration is required, but you may sign up at the race registration. Also, you may choose your ride area when you sign up. Donations are handled by the Ride Guides when you check-in at the meeting spots on May 14th. We will send a confirmation email a day before the event.

Will you suffer? Yes, more than likely. Will you have fun? Oh, that's a definite yes. And that beer is going to taste oh so good after riding the 2017 Sunshine Coaster

2017 Signature Sponsors
Boreale Mountain Biking

Team Boréale consists of a great community of local riders who are as passionate about their Yukon lifestyles as they are about riding through their backyard singletrack. We all love living in the Yukon, and feel the best way to experience the place is on a bike, roaming through the singletrack that flows through our boreal forests, mountain tops, and river valleys. At Boréale, we strongly value great experiences, delicious food and sharing lots of laughs while out riding a bike.

Truck Loggers Association

The Truck Loggers Association was formed in 1943 to give independent timber harvesting contractors a collective voice in the changes taking place in society and the forest industry.

The TLA now represents independent harvesting contractors, independent sawmills, small tenure holders and industry suppliers located across the coast of B.C. With more than 450 member companies, the TLA continues to be an influential voice. The TLA believes that a strong and sustainable working forest will generate long-term prosperity for the people of British Columbia and that the people who work in our forests should share in this prosperity.

Sunshine Coast Community Forests

Creating a legacy for our citizens by being exceptional stewards of our forest while balancing environmental, economic and social aspirations of the community.
