2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships Schedule Released

Mar 14, 2017
by AJ Barlas
Racing at a world level for 2017 hasn't kicked off yet, but there is certainly a lot of excitement for it to do so! But despite this, teams of people are busy planning out their events for the season and one of those is the team behind the World Champs this year, in Cairns Australia. Come September 5, the best mountain bike athletes from around the world will represent their countries in the jungle of Cairns, on the track built by none-other Glen Jacobs', World Trail.

The final metres of sprint to the line have been cut down by 30 meters of so since 2014.
The Cairns track finish line.

The racing on the Cairns track over the last few years has been eventful, to say the least, and what the weather does come race day is as good as anyone's guess, making it all the more exciting. Will the local talent of the Hannah's, Brosnon, Fearon, or even Josh Button or Graeme Mudd be able to hold off the likes of the Atherton's, Gwin, or Minnaar? Will the weather play a role the way that it did here in 2014, only to give us a complete underdog that rises to the occasion? In the XCO will Absalon be able to repeat his 2014 win, or will Schurter take it, doubling up on his 2016 World Cup win here? Eva Lechner won ahead of Emily Batty in 2014, but both were further down the results sheet in the dry, humid conditions last year. It really is wide-open in many regards!

Gwin thrashing the pedals through a wave of lactic towards the finish arch.
Can Gwin take his first World Champs win on the Cairns track? He's yet to do better than a 4th.

Josh Button boomeranging his way into the history books.
Josh Button landed a podium result here in 2016, surprising a lot of people.
All the people of Australia.
Fans at the finish line.

Regardless of what happens, it's safe to say that it will be an action-packed race and to be there would be one heck of an experience. If being there is of interest, the schedule and things like tickets for the event will be helpful. The schedule for the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Cairns has now been released and tickets to the event go on sale, Tuesday, April 4, 2017. The World Champs will be held at the Smithfield Regional Park, James Cook University between September 5–10, 2017 and will feature six days of mountain biking action.

Graeme Mudd the second most badass privateer outta hell Australia this weekend. A great qualie backed up with a formidable 8th only 4 seconds off the pace.
Muddy finished in 8th last year, only 4 seconds off the pace.

World champs for 2017 have one notable shift in the schedule and that is moving the two disciplines more in line with most of the 2016 World Cup formats. The Cross Country (XCO) race will be held on Saturday, September 9 and the Downhill (DHI) will take place on Sunday. With over 20,000 spectators expected to attend the event, you will want to get your tickets early. Travel packages are also now on sale from Flight Centre for those traveling to Cairns for the event.

Rachel Atherton is too good. Today she was unstoppable for the umpteenth time taking the win by 3.48 seconds.
Rachel Atherton on her way to that perfect season.

bigquotesWith just under six months until the event kicks off in Cairns, the release of the competition schedule gives fans plenty of time to plan their full Mountain Bike World Championships experience. The revised competition format, with the switch of the XCO and DHI finals, means that spectators are in for a fantastic finish to this very special event.Cycling Australia CEO, Nick Green

The event will have significant TV and digital viewing presence including the distribution of television broadcast to a cumulative audience in excess of 6.13 million globally across 18 different nations. In Australia, SBS and Fox Sports will carry the broadcast. The Queensland Government is proud to support the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships Cairns through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Tickets will be available from Ticketek on Tuesday 4 April 2017.

Mick would love nothing more than to time a big come-back with this WC stop on his home trails and was looking pinned and comfortable all afternoon.
Mick would love nothing more to take World Champs gold on his home trails.

If Whistler doesn't apply to host a WC they can't pick them
  • 8 0
Short and to the point, well put sir
  • 20 0
It's more Whistler that don't want them. Other than that it is not impossible to have two Wc in Canada cause we had two in the same province in 2008 and 2009 Bromont + Msa. Riders would love it for sure as lot of Wc riders spend times betwen races at Whistler. But that being said, whistler already have the biggest mtb event in the world and yeah they probably have to apply, UCI doesn't decide to put Wc where they want.

 So good.

@anchoricex I'm not sure how to say this....but...I, I have a man crush.

Why should they get a WC DH race? They have everything else to do with sports in one convenient perfect package. At least Scotland has shit weather all year and you have a 700% chance of being punched in the face, so the WC event is a nice change to that.

If they move a DH event to Whistler then riding Mecca will be achieved and every other bike park and downhill center will close down. Do you want that really?
  • 17 4
Got a beef with where they are held? Put together an organizing committee and put your money where your mouth is. These things don't just materialize out of thin air, no matter what the ever so eloquent pinkbike commenters may think. Each event is organized by different groups who have put the work in, which is why smaller venues and hills so after host them.
  • 2 0
Isn't whistler banned from hosting UCI events? Hahaha
  • 1 0
CDN Open course seems really short compared to other venues.
  • 2 3
@Paul7189 : WC race venues should be chosen on the quality of the track, facilities and infrastructure etc.

Not on the charitable basis of giving you a break from being punched in the face.
  • 27 0
 Funny, but....
When will you numbskulls get it through your head that the UCI have little to nothing to do with which venues decide to host a WC??? Venues bid, then the UCI decide based upon many factors the most important being who asked first, the calender and then what is most suitable.

Sure, whistler would be great, but it's not the UCI you should lambast, try Vail Resorts....

Schladming would be great, try Planai lift operations....

Morzine would be great, well, we'll wait and see on that one.....

Champery back would be great, try Champery office de Tourisme...

and most probably Whistler makes way more money out of CWX than any venue out of a WC

 HAHAHA Solid gold

The whole WC in Whistler thing has a lot to do with the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

This is an oooooooold story. Years ago (in the 90s!) Whistler wanted to have a WC. The UCI told them to host a large stage race event for a few years to prove they could manage it, and then they would be awarded a WC. Whistler hosted the stage race, and it went great, and the UCI awarded Whistler a WC! Woohoo! Then bad things started to happen, there was infighting with different stakeholders in Whistler with the event, and very late in the year the event was cancelled. Gestev swept in, and managed to save the event by hosting the event at Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver (saving teams tons of travel $$$). The WC was hosted at Grouse for two years, and it has never gone back to Whistler.

I know that a lot of the infighting in Whistler had to do with who gets what $$$. I highly suspect that Whistler makes a lot of $$$ of their current marquee event, Crankworx, and is hesitant to schedule a competing event which would cannibalize. From their perspective, why host a World Cup, when everyone already comes to Crankworx, which is a longer event, and they get to keep more of the revenue.

its up to Whister to place a bid, not the UCI. At least Canada has St Anne, which is where any Canadian WC should take place anyway.
  • 1 0
@atrokz: The St. anne track is awesome, but this is a huge country shouldn't there be a west coast race also?
  • 1 0
@Yarlezy: Yea there should. Whistler would be rad, been there and it's a great place. but not sure if they want to front the bill for the bid when they already have crankworx. that said, since winter sales are apparently dwindling, it would be a good time for them to do so.

One kind of expected an article called "2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships Schedule" to sort of... you know. Have the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships schedule in it. Yes I know there's a link, but we have text and web pages and come on.
  • 23 7
my least favorite venue, all i remember about this venue is waiting a long time for steve peat to ride and that most of coverage is in a flat area almost at the end of the track where your pretty much know how the rider is going to do when crossing the finish line, hopefully redbull learned from its mistakes and have this figured out for this year
  • 9 9
Well you obviously have never been to the venue in person so don't judge the fact that some people are proud to call this place home and thrive on having a WC event held here in Cairns.
  • 22 1
@PhilVoss: I think @Narro2 is talking more about the video coverage then the track itself.
  • 4 0
Yeah there weren't too many good shots of the track... most of the footage of a race run was that last flat pedal bit but I don't watch DH for that shit... The most we can do is cross our fingers and hope hahaha
  • 3 0
@Lookinforit: With the advent of 'GO-Pros etc' how come the WC don't have better footage?
Day after Day we have pinkbikers posting awesome footage of runs from a multitude of angles and sections, yet a fully funded WC event has 20 odd secs of footage of a ~3-4min course... WTF?
  • 2 0
@th00mus: That's a fair point I thought @Narro2 was criticizing the track itself, my bad. The Red Bull coverage for the Cairns track definitely needs to set up its game for World Champs. There were multiple features such as the Cyclone Drop that didn't have a live feed which would've been more entertaining to watch than the final sprint.
  • 2 0
@Narro2 are you talking about Cairns, or Canberra, where Peaty won World Champs?
  • 1 0
@PhilVoss: add yo that that on this SIDE of the world we are watching at 3 am
  • 1 0
@antennae: I don't know man. The one with lots of mud.
One fan took a bike from rider and tried to ride it down on that track. It didn't go very.

That's the one I am referring to
  • 1 0
 Excuse the grammar
  • 2 0
@AntN: Because there is a massive difference between recording video on a Go Pros SD card and transmitting it to a live broadcast.

I guess Red Bull has their finger on the pulse when it comes to dumbing down tracks because the audience is fickle.

I'm pretty sure the Cairns rainforest - this isn't woodlands - made it very difficult to run services to the different locations.
  • 1 0
@fraggler: GoPro can transmit live now. They do in other sports and did during redbull rampage
  • 1 0
@WolfStoneD: what about sponsorship. If i am sponsored by Sony camera i am definitely not wearing a gopro to show my ride live.
  • 4 0
In Australia we have a 'Telco' called Telstra, my better half works for them. Lately they have been running ad featuring MTBing and their new video and live streaming technology. I'm putting together an email suggesting that Telstra becomes a sponsor of the Cairns MTB WC as puts in the infrastructure (Conduit, cable fibre optics etc whatever) up the mountain so that camera can be easily set up all the way along the entire track. If done properly 2017 Cairns MTB WC will have the best coverage of any WC ever.
  • 1 0
 @Narro2: Cairns, then.
  • 2 0
@AntN: + you once, want to again and again. Let's hope your email is successful...
  • 1 0
@ColquhounerHooner: Thanks mate, seems like a win/win for everyone, I'll let you know how it goes....

Richie Rude for WC DH champ!
  • 2 1
I would be amused by that outcome.
  • 8 0
@Session603: He's got the legs for the fireroad sprint section, always a must on a DH track.
  • 5 5
@Clarkeh: I'm not doubting he's capable. I'd love to see it. Truthfully, I'd rather see AG win it though.
  • 1 0
 @Session603: Didn't realize I'd tagged you sorry, wasn't having a go.
  • 1 0
Did you all forget he used ride dh and never got the results?
  • 10 1
The WC in Cairns is going to be EPIC! I've heard Glen is going to do some major reworking of the track to take it to the next level. I agree about the coverage, that could always improve. So many great sections that get missed...
  • 11 0
I always get so excited for the season to start, but then that month and halfish break after the 1st race happens...
  • 10 0
Anyone know if that aussie spectator who jumped on a bike and ate shit in the woops a couple years ago is going to be there?
  • 3 0
@mrgonzo: Holy f*ck how have I never seen that LOL
  • 2 0
I hope not, well at least I hope he or anyone else doesn't do something so stupid... Waiting for hours for racing to commence sucked the big one....
  • 3 1
@mrgonzo: that shit never gets old.
  • 6 4
AFAIK, the kid was just trying to help the injured rider out by walking the bike to an area where it could be picked up and brought to the trucks. The crowd wouldn't have any of that and was egging him to ride the bike down the track. This is a bike he's never been on, probably not the right size, spd pedals (kid's wearing sneakers), and set up for a WC-level rider. Take it easy on the guy.
  • 11 1
Came here just to say: Sik Mik FTW!!
  • 10 3
I wonder if a 29er could win on this track?
  • 2 2
@YellowknifeRob It is very pedally, especially at the end. Unless they level the berms and bridges, I think the maneuverability of 650b far outweighs the pedaling efficiency
  • 4 2
@e-loop: pedally + banked turns + smooth man-made features should be gold for 29ers
  • 3 2
It's made for fatbikes, with all that mud.
  • 3 1
The more rock gardens the better for a 29". Basically everything but Tight switchbacks.

I would not be mad if Bruni got one more here... Should be a good test of who has it all.

If last year's atmosphere is anything to go by, the World Champs this year is going to be mental. Can't fricking wait!
  • 1 0
Buy tickets from ticketek Australia ? or where ? Anyone got an idea on how much a spectator pass usually is ? And if you have to pay per day ?
  • 1 0
From memory...About $20AUD for a day pass and $35ish for the week...Usually you can just rock up and get tickets at the gate.
  • 1 0
@AntN: Cheers mate, 4x of us heading over for four days to watch and to ride ! Any suggestions on good trails to ride in the area ?
  • 1 0
 @glenno: www.ridecairns.com/riding/where-to-ride

Kuranda is my favourite, easy access via road, can get in heaps of runs during the day....
  • 2 0
@glenno: Last year Smithfield itself was fun - even tho the event tracks were obviously closed, there were still plenty of fun trails open including the old Worlds DH. And Atherton Tablelands are worth a visit.
  • 2 0
So many easy ways to walk in at Smithfield....... Mcgregor road trailhead and look at the map ! Your welcome.

@tastydirt: As in to get in without a ticket?

What ever happen to the giant Shark head that was used on the start gate in 1996?

UCI is just looking to get paid like the Olympic Committee, just another form of extortion. Whistler keeps true to MTBiking!
  • 5 3
Can't wait for all of the pedaling at the end. So exciting.

Bring the WC back to Grouse Mountain!!
  • 3 0
I was there for that. I was new to riding and walked through the pits and saw some tall British dude on an Orange and had no idea it was Peaty. EPIC weather during that race.
