2020 Red Bull Rampage Cancelled

Vinny T airing out his legs.

While we saw the return of enduro racing at EWS Zermatt last weekend and Crankworx announced that they'll be able to proceed with a made-for-TV format in Innsbruck next month similar to the Crankworx Summer Series, Red Bull Rampage organizers have made the decision to cancel the 2020 event due to the current global health pandemic and the restrictions it has placed on travel to the United States.

bigquotesThis year we were especially looking forward to delivering an event that entertained and excited the world about sports again, and we recognize the magnitude of the decision to cancel and the effect it has on the riders and industry. However, the challenges presented by the global health pandemic both in getting riders and teams to the event, and in protecting the health and safety of the riders, staff, and everyone involved including the local Southern Utah community drove our decision making.Todd Barber, Director of H5 Events

Complications around border crossing echoed by many athletes played into the analysis and decision to cancel.

bigquotesI was excited to return to Utah this year to defend my title at the 2020 Red Bull Rampage, but as the situation around Covid-19 continues to evolve, I wasn’t confident in my ability to bring my team to the US due to travel restrictions, amongst other logistical challenges.Brandon Semenuk

Organizers will now focus on a 2021 event for the freeride mountain bike community and details on the 2021 event will be available in the coming months.

Victory lap for Semenuk.

Rampage video contest, w/ Tom's 'Wild West' being the first entry. Let's make it happen.

I have long hoped for a successor to the Race Face "Ultimate Freeride Challenge".
Viewer voting, 1v1 video battles. I´m OK with it being only pros this time, for the official socially distant Rampage title.
Let´s go Red Bull, do it!

Great idea. I like the ‘real’ series from the xgames — 90 seconds to make a statement. I’d love to see what the top freeride dudes would do. Maybe invite like 20 to participate that would be rad

Came here to say the same thing. Lots of video contests happening in the bmx world right now. I know its obviously more difficult for freeride, than street riding, but its worth a shot.

Each rider would also submit a description of their track for a jury to review:
- location
- track length / drop
- list of natural and built features, alongside their characteristics (drop height / length / landing or huck)
- list of builders
- a drone-based video recording

That way the guys who got massive production crews cannot rob the others and win the internet

 Or,

What about a video contest for us "mere mortals" who can't ride even a 10th as good, who are stuck working from home or home schooling our kids.....or whatever situation it is these days?

There are some seriously funny people out there. It might give us something better to do than commenting/trolling etc

.....just a thought. But it would give my family something a little more constructive to do

This is legit, shoot I don't know what XGames is up too this year(I know they've not been MTB's biggest ally in the past) but their recent street ski/snowboard contests they started doing actually sounds like the exact same as this. Would be cool if they did a freeride contest that was similiar.

@Sethimus: Not true. 1) He stopped all flights from China and was then called a racist - even by the Chinese CCP (who had already stopped internal flights to control the virus). 2) Each State in the USA is responsible for dealing with the Virus. The government has offered to coordinate at a national level but the states have declined that offer. 3) He could introduce an executive order to take control but his constitutional authority to do so would be highly contested as a matter of both separation of powers and federalism. Still, such orders might well be consistent with both. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said, “I just don’t understand why we’re not doing that—we really should be,” but he also acknowledged a tension with “states’ rights to do what they want.” .If the federal government did take control and had the backing of congress then it would be more legitimate. 4) Its an election year and there are forces acting within the USA to use the Corona pandemic to undermine Trump despite the damage it inflicts on the country and people. The great irony is that I think it will backfire and Trump will win another term. That will be the next emergency - Self exploding democrats!!

  • 25 2
To be fair, more people died from covid than from flipping a 60ft canyon.
  • 20 0
 Depends.

A pro rider will feel that, at least, he can control the risk of that 60 foot flip, and can avoid being injured or killed as long as he doesn’t make a mistake.

With Covid, if he gets infected, or what consequences it will have is a gamble totally beyond their control.

And some cases here in Europe indicate, that especially for sports professionals Covid might have the potential to be just as career-ending as a messed up 60 foot flip, even if the initial symptoms are rather mild.

@FuzzyL: Yeah but for a healthy athlete ages 1-29 its barely a blip. Mostly likely asymptomatic or a slight cold. Like an 0.02 death rate. Way more other things to be concerned about.
  • 11 0
@sutter2k: Death rate is negligible. But inner organs afffected or fatigue syndrome might affect also young people in the long term.
  • 2 0
@hubertje-ryu: more people have died falling out of there bed than flipping a 60ft canyon
that does not mean that your bed is more dangerous
  • 7 0
@sutter2k: Just because a pro athlete has a higher chance of faring better doesn't mean they don't have a lot to lose. That's assuming the riders are able to make it to the event due to travel restrictions.

Best case: They miss out on other opportunities because they tested positive and have to isolate. That can suck depending on what it was they are missing.

Not so great case: They get pretty sick and lose a ton of strength while fighting the illness. Think about the last time you had seasonal flu, likely knocked you on your butt for a while. Not only do they miss out on things, but they then have to recover all that strength they lost. Go look at that viral pic of the super fit Nurse showing his before and after covid (Mike Schultz). Dude lost 50lbs of mass. Yes, he was 43, that's still pretty scary.

Worst case: Covid can really wreck people in ways doctors are still trying to understand. While a good majority with covid recover without issue, there are quite a few cases of lung/brain/heart damage that very well may be permanent. Imagine being a Pro Athlete and losing lung capacity, or having a damaged heart? That's a career ender on top of being a general crap thing to live with for the rest of your life as an athletic person.

TL;DR: Missing one year of RBR to avoid screwing with your career as a pro athlete is a pretty smart move.

We believe and care...as much is necessary to be safe without forgoing our livelihoods and lives in general:

Washington County has 22 deaths, 7 people currently hospitalized, 300 active cases, and new cases are declining and stand at approximately 15 new cases daily.
  • 21 6
@wasea04: "as much is necessary to be safe without forgoing our lives in general"? is that an excuse? I go to work, and the post office, and rarely go shopping (less than once a week)

I am 19 years old and haven't seen my best friend but once in 6 MONTHS. I can't believe I haven't gone crazy yet. Stay home, ride bikes. It's what I do.
  • 11 0
@rosemarywheel: Bummer, dude. Glad you're getting out to ride at least. No excuse here, haven't stopped working once throughout it all, most people here have done so also. You can be cautious and keep living life mostly as normal, wearing a mask in a store is no big deal and if it helps keep people safe physically and mentally then even better.

@wasea04: All above the age of 65. So stay inside old people. Cuz southern Utah is STACKED with em.

@wasea04: Props for standing up and being rational in this crazy time. People from or near big cities (probably 90% of Pb readers) don’t get the fact that viruses don’t spread the same in every locale. Hyper-dense populations spread it faster. It’s science. Washington County, which I frequently visit, is very sparse, in comparison to NY. You guys are doing great, keep it up.

I think this was the right decision and I appreciate how difficult it must have been. Crankworx and EWS might go on with non-European athletes, but a Red Bull Rampage limited to Americans would have been a massive disappointment. I'm already looking forward to 2021!

Why would it be limited to Americans? Travel isn't banned right now.
  • 18 0
@onemanarmy: Travel back can be difficult and very tough for those with families due to required isolation after returning...
  • 22 0
@onemanarmy: I don't know where you are getting your information from but traveling is still far from being unrestricted. Entry in the US is prohibited for anyone that has been in the European Schengen Area during the past 14 days for instance. Not to mention the ongoing trend of rising infections and further travel restrictions around the world. We have seen how quickly things can change back in march earlier this year. It is not worth the risk (and logistical headache) to push for a Rampage in 2020. There is bigger things to worry about at the moment, Rampage will (hopefully) happen again next year.
  • 16 0

Red Bull TV did something similar with Fort William - put the winning runs from the last decade against each other with a +/- seconds system to account for weather etc. To find out who had the 'fastest' run of the decade at Fort William.

The science was sketchy but a good watch nonetheless.

  • 1 0
@BenPea: Ah i can't remember sorry. It was called something like A Decade Of Fort William and i assume should still be on Red Bull TV to watch. I think Rachel Atherton was up there though.

Great to watch some of the runs actually. Only started watching WC DH about 2 years ago so good to see runs from years past. Unbelievable how outdated some of the bikes look even from only 5 years ago. Things change fast.

No Hardline this year either it seems.

Ah well, it gives Dan Atherton more time to up the ante with his course building. Watched it for the first time in 2017 and people barely made it to the finish. 2019 and people backflipping and stuff.

I assume Dan saw the backflipping and channeled his inner-Jordan: "...at that point, it became personal to me."*

Currently Australian citizens or permanent residents you cannot leave Australia due to COVID-19 restrictions unless you have an exemption. Pro athletes can gain an exception.

Travel insurance is hard to secure.

The numbers of returning citizens have been capped to around 400 per day into Australia, there are very limited flights currently available to and from Australia and many people have not be able to travel back to Australia due to the limited flights.

Returning travelers have been bumped off flights at the last min and the only real way of more confidently securing a seat is booking a 1st or business class ticket.

Once returned all travelers arriving in Australia, including Australian citizens, must quarantine for 14 days at a designated facility, such as a hotel in their port of arrival. This is at the travelers cost and currently sits at around $3000 per person.
