2022 Pinkbike Awards: Send of the Year Nominees - The Most Committed 360 & 2 HUGE Straight Airs

Send of the Year

The biggest award of the year, quite literally, sees nominees from exactly where you might exact: Red Bull Rampage, Whistler Crankworx, and a random pile of rocks just off the highway in BC. There's only one trick to see here in Godziek's 360, while Lemoine and Holonko throw it back to the good ol' days of freeride with massive straight airs and some out-of-the-box thinking. Which is your favorite?

Why he's nominated

We probably don't need to explain this one, but I do need to have at least a few sentences here. Rampage was rowdy in all the different ways possible, from Semenuk's drop-in to Rheeder's entire run to the builders carving lines in the side of legit cliffs, but Godziek's spin above the canyon gap - and right above another massive drop - seemed to be the highlight for many people watching. As if doing a 360 off a cliff isn't scary enough, there was another cliff that he needed to deal with right after landing; the level of commitment from Godziek was insane. Let's forget about the overall results, his 86.33 score, and whether he was robbed or not, and just appreciate this bit of craziness for what it is.

Godziek's POV footage of his Rampage run

Why he's nominated

You know it was big when everyone's favorite move from Crankworx was a straight air. Lemoine was on a good run regardless, but tens of thousands of people lining the course exploded when he jumped over the entire step-up platform at the bottom of the course, much like Timo Pritzel's attempt way back in 2004. The flying German had a massive crash, but Lemoine, who was also on a hardtail, rolled away as smoothly as anyone could hope for. We all know the technical tricks riders are doing are incredibly difficult and dangerous, but there will always be something more relatable about simply trying to go big. He said this about his second run: "I can't believe I had the courage to do it in the second run, because I was almost going to be happy with fourth. But Joyride doesn't happen every week, you know? I said, 'You're here, you have a second chance, try your best, we'll see what happens.'"

Why he's nominated

It's only 1:28 long but Kona's Caleb Holonko kicks it off with one of the sends of the year when he gaps the entire double step-down move from an old New World Disorder video just outside of Pemberton, BC. Filmed by Ollie Jones, Holonko comes into the first drop and, from what I can tell, commits with a massive pull off the lip and still just barely makes it to the wooden landing that looks a bit surprised to see him. It's the kind of move where you're simply just trying to make it to the other side, and it feels about as "freeride" as you can get.

Caleb Holonko Turns the Lights Out

All three are truly insane, so I have absolutely no idea how you'll pick a winner for this one.
  • 27 7
What about that guy who did Barges rampage drop ..
  • 13 3
 @CantClimb: DANNY MAC!!!!
  • 19 2
Easy who has the a moto background and 50k followers.
  • 36 6
Gotta go to Caleb. The other two were done while a medical helo was on standby and with full support and medic staff within shouting distance. Caleb's pull is the most true to the spirit of freeride.
  • 7 3
@CantClimb: agreed. That guy got so much crap for doing that drop, like it had to sit there untouched until Brage decided to try it again.

Props to that kid, I would vote for him
  • 9 0
@fullendurbro: I beg to differ - to me, an (unnecessary) increase of the risk potentially involved in the aftermath doesn’t make the move itself any better or not.
  • 2 0
@fullendurbro: A heli on standby isn't going to prevent serious injuries if you mess up, bub.
  • 3 1
@fullendurbro: couldn't agree more. syzmon isn't the first do 360 into a double drop, claw takes that honor. Lemoine gets second just barely.
  • 3 0
@NERyder: I don't think he got crap for doing it so much as his friends claiming it was "Danny Mac's drop now!"
  • 3 2
@Neechy: whoever stomps it first get's to claim it.
  • 1 0
@CantClimb: Eric your spelling forced me to read everybody else's comments.

The double gap over the rocks would scare the crap out of me just wondering if the boards would split
  • 114 4
I feel like Caleb should win. The other 2 were in a competition so the 'scene was set' to a degree. Caleb just rolled up to this popular for the summer feature and absolutely stomped it. If that's not a mic drop I don't know what is.

I disagree the size of the feature is smaller and less committed than stomping the whole step up/step down like Tomas did and UNDER pressure…Its one thing to clear long drops and jumps but its a whole different other mental block to tell yourself “ right Im gonna jump up and over that GIANT wood structure, hopefully clear the whole thing and land on a completely blind landing that wasnt design to be used as a landing pad at the height
and angle ill be coming at it” ….and again, totally blind landing with a massive structure in between.

Ive seen every iteration of Crankworx since day one and ill admit it doesnt do much at all for me…I usually just ride the park as Im not super fond of bmx tricks on mtb…What Tomas did was seriously fvcked up, its like he used a cheater code or just said fvck it and went for it…It wasnt just another BIG feature, it was serious mind fvck to look at
  • 25 2
@neroleeloo: I saw my dashboard tab light up yellow and said to myself 'Oh lets see who disagrees with me!' and the first 2 words in your response were on point! Thanks for the chuckle.
  • 29 0
@neroleeloo: I think you underestimate the consequences of messing up that double drop. If you’re not perfect you’re spending a substantial amount of time in the hospital…
  • 22 0
@Tmackstab: lol happy to make you laugh! :-) My gift to you!Merry Christmas bud !
  • 4 0
@matthewtongue: Yeah Maxs POV of almost missing the landing is the scariest thing I saw on IG this year for sure. And then Caleb decides to just send the whole thing after that. Like wtf
  • 11 4
@matthewtongue: ive seen the feature…And its just another long drop with high consequences regardless of the environment around it…but still think Tomas “trick” require more or everything…, skills, commitment, judgement, delivering under pressure and Its not like clipping the tail end of that feature with your rr wheel would have been consequence free either.
  • 10 3
Agree. Caleb shorts that, catches that wooden lip wrong, and death is a serious possibility. Not to say the other sends aren't worthy, but at least those dudes would rag doll downhill if they crashed, this guy was about 6 inches from his rear wheel being on the wrong side of a wood wall. Not to mention the giant sharp granite boulders that he'd be smashing into. All of em are amazing, but Lights Out was just that.
  • 5 1
@neroleeloo : the size of the feature is certainly not smaller. You think TL would send the lilypad feature on a hardtail?! Not to take away from Lil Moine, that was BONKERS and i loved everything about it.
  • 10 1
Lemoine is send of the year if I had to pick. The lip wasn't made for it, Lemoine had to go BMX-style manny pop off the front side of the platform after the lip, just insane technical skill for such a meaty hit. On a hardtail.

Godziek's 3 had a similar degree of technicality, rampage has seen some similarly wild stunts over the years. Hard to not give it to him either for how hard a flat drop 3 is.

Holonko went big but there were bigger drops sent this year. I loved his video, really brought back the nostalgia of watching new world disorder for the first time, but, let us be honest Dylan Sheffer was king of the fat f*cking drop game this year.

I’d say in competition is more impressive. Caleb’s gap was gnarly, don’t get me wrong. But for a competition, it doesn’t matter how you feel or how you slept you have a time slot where you have to throw down. Prepping is a little easier for a video segment
  • 4 0
@bonjurns: no rag dolling possible for Tomas either…Too much gas and he would have literally landed on a FLAT parking lot made out of concrete… from 40/50 feet up … with ZERO rr suspension.
  • 2 0
@Tmackstab: ...clearly that is why Orbea picked Max... none of those other PBA riders were close to pulling of this sort of riding that really grabs eyeballs.
  • 3 0
So if people aren't thinking straight airing the double drop as a single was gnarly enough what about the backflip over the Pemberton train gap?!
  • 2 0
Fully agree on Holonko FTW. On touchdown the rider, bike, and the landing were all an inch from folding in half. Just a massive huck.
  • 4 0
@ryanandrewrogers: HOW DID SHEFFERS NOT MAKE IT AND HOW DID I FORGET THAT ONE
  • 62 0
I'm no Scientologist but dylan sheffers gap was pretty big

So big, another worthy send for sure.
  • 5 1
indubitably the fattest first hit this year.
  • 2 0
thought this one was gonna be on here
  • 11 1
I'm a scientologist and that thetan's valence was off the chain. Straight Alien s%^t that father Hubbard would be proud of. Dude was straight headed back to the home planet. Now... for the low price of infinity instalments of all-the-money-you-have.99 and a lock of John Travolta's hair I can give you a similar valence and cure all your maladies and mental health problems. Seriously though- insane by Sheffer and definitely a contender in my non-scientologist opinion.

@mikelevy: Update the list! No shame in admiting you forgot about it...

 Sheffer’s road gap
  • 6 0
Real knows real, hope you win bud.
  • 2 0
Big ups. You had an unreal huck too tho
  • 29 0
Dylan Sheffer's drop really went under the radar here hey
  • 5 0
That was another ridiculous send worthy of being on this list for sure.
  • 4 0
Bike bicycle doesn't want you to know about Shaffer's drop
  • 22 1
 1) holonko
2) Lemoine
3) godziek
4) sheffer
5) holonko again for the train gap flip
6) tmac
  • 3 0
TMac's wood drop off in the desert was truly amazing.
  • 18 0
Dylan Shefer deserves to be on here. The biggest road gap we've seen in a while, no sponsors, no competition or recognition, and he did it all first go with no run up. He did it just for himself and the sport. All Risk, no reward.
  • 17 0
There are sends that are impressive but then there is Holonko. How many times did you watch that one? Over and over. Well done, dude. #hane
  • 19 0
Thanks yall for the love ✌️
  • 17 0
I found Caleb's the most terrifying to watch. I give it a 10.
  • 10 0
 Same, so scary.
  • 17 2
What about buddy who stomped Brage's rampage drop?
  • 5 0
 That was wild
  • 12 0
 you guys forgot Dylan Sheffer
  • 6 0
That one was 100% worthy of being on the list.
  • 2 0
@mikelevy: why didn't it make it?
  • 6 0
 @NebulousNate: Because we're dumb tbh
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: Mike, it's a website, you can update it. That's like the biggest benefit of not being print media.
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: I applaud your honesty haha. It happens.
  • 1 0
 @mikelevy: add a honorable mention!!!!
  • 9 0
Can someone explain to me why Dylan Sheffer’s road gap isn’t the only thing on this nomination?

www.instagram.com/p/CccHzX2uvKw/?igshid=MWI4MTIyMDE
  • 10 0
Why oh why isn’t Dylan Sheffer’s big road gap on here.
  • 9 0
2 people are getting robbed here no matter how you slice it.
  • 6 0
Dylan Shaffer is the win, for sure. You guys must be taking a page from Thrashers SOTY this year.
  • 7 3
Imagine being at Joyride live and looking away from Lemoine's gap of the step up platform like the 3 people in that photo....
  • 7 2
Has to be Lemoine for me. The other 2 where sick but something that big on a hardtail is absolutely crazy.
  • 10 4
 Easy, Tomas for the win!
  • 6 2
Tomas for sure - it’s a no brainer. Shoot me down if you will, but this was the only where I actually jumped out of my seat while watching
  • 4 1
How in the hell do you not have T-Mac's crazy gap. That was such a huge yank! Saying that... I'm going Lemoine. That had so much impact.
  • 4 0
CALEB!!!! If you've seen it in real life, you understand how insane that pull is. All insane sends. Freeride lives!
  • 5 0
LET'S GO CALEB! Breakout season, breakout rider, and send of the year.
  • 4 0
Godziek! Commitment, competition, follow up. And the style, on and off the bike. Thumbs up
  • 4 0
Slept on Dylan Sheffer's road gap. At least twice the size of all three here
  • 3 0
Tomas or Caleb. Those straight line sends of bananas. Full commitment and the consequences with each are so high.
  • 4 0
Tomas for sure. People forget he crashed the first time he tried it!
  • 3 0
Brage's big send from that bike park edit deserves an honourable mention, IMO.
  • 2 0
Szymon for the win considering it was in a middle of his run with rampage stress on his first run. Nothing against the other, just my point of view
  • 1 0
Call me crazy but I feel like that insane drop out of the tree canopy from Eliott Lapotre deserves a mention here. That one along with T-mac's wood feature drop made my stomach turn watching their POV's.
  • 1 0
Thanks, pinkbike, for putting together categories that really matter. Example, value product of the year is only going to spark meaningless debate on what is value. Much better to have meaningless debate on sweet sends.
  • 3 0
@mikelevy any chance we can get a PB poll for this one?
  • 2 0
@mikelevy These certainly are big hits. Will there be a Women's Sends of 2022 as well?
  • 4 0
 Let’s go Tomas!
  • 3 0
Holonko for sure, did it with pure class.
  • 4 0
 Caleb.
  • 4 0
 Szymon Lemonko wins.
  • 4 0
 Holonko
  • 1 0
I know all those hits were massive, but Lemoine is the one, in competition, hardtail, tiny bike, tricky lip, lots of pressure
  • 4 2
Let's hope Szymon doesn't get robbed again.
  • 2 0
Honorable mention, that kid Danny Mac that sent Brage’s Rampage drop
  • 2 0
The Lemoine gap is the only one I watched multiple times
  • 2 0
First one I thought of when seeing the title was Caleb Holonko.
  • 1 0
Hopefully there is a Friday Fail of the year post tomorrow on top of the usual FF.
