Episode 4 : 44 Days and Rolling

Jul 4, 2011
by Freehub Magazine
As the sun rose over the dashboard of the truck, the Freehub Magazine & 44 Days crew finally catches an outline of the Appalachians, and realizes the 27-hour drive is soon to be over. After "Snunderstorms" through Colorado and endless hours on the highway, our minds and white knuckles began to ease upon our entrance into North Carolina.

Brevard, NC was our first stop on the east coast, which happens to be home of the Pisgah Ranger District and endless miles of prime technical singletrack. After a quick stop at the Hub bike shop, we met some good friends who showed us around Pisgah. Our first adventure took us to Daniel Ridge, a flowy and technical sigletrack trail that follows an amazing creek in the rain forest.

After a taste of singletrack in Brevard, we headed north to Asheville and checked out Industry Nine to see what goes into building such quality wheels. Following an awesome I9 tour, we headed even further north to meet our friends in Boone and ride the Wilsons' high country. After an amazing all-mountain session and nights rest, we woke up to some cold snowy weather and headed over to Sugar Mountain to ride their DH track. Boone has an array of great riding, but the town doesn’t have much in terms of legal riding, so they are creating an amazing bike park called Rocky Knob.

The Rocky Knob Bike Park resides right outside of downtown Boone and contains a system of trails for every level of rider. We had a chance to help build one of their new machine lines with an impressive crew of 20 plus builders. Rocky Knob is a huge step in the right direction for the Boone area, and marks their first public trail area built with bikes in mind. We were able to observe some of the local community and trails thanks to a tight crew of riders around Brevard, Asheville and Boone.

After and amazing North Carolina experience, we took a few days for relaxation before pushing north to Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Vietnam and Highland Bike Park were our next stops, so we were super excited to see what else the east coast had to offer. Check it our next week in episode 5!!

All that footage at Sugar was messing with my head. You guys were switching back and forth between clips of the middle and the top. hah hah!
Which trail was that in Boone? I'm assuning it's that crazy long one I've heard about. It didn't look like any of the usual stuff up there. Awesome tech!

I was kinda disappointed in the footage of Brevard...after all I've heard about it, I was expecting to see some sick swoopy singletrack that would make me eager to ride it. It just sorta looked like rutted, choppy doubletrack. Not trying to be critical, but I've just heard such good things, I was expecting it to be rad. Locals, was it just a matter of what they chose to film, or was this representative of Brevard/Asheville riding?

It's really just what they decided to ride. Daniel Ridge would not necessarily be the fist place I would send someone, although it is a fun trail. Come to ride and you won't be disappointed.

Intresting. I think NC's University has a DH team.

Yeah to some degree. All of the UNC schools, App, and Asheville, have cycling teams, but not devoted DH teams. I race collegiate DH, DS, and XC for UNCW.
