Party shirts and all types of bikes graced the trails in Whistler on Monday. Clint Trahan was out to grab some photos of some of the lucky riders to sample the goods on Opening Day and their prized steeds.

Benny is ready for another Whistler Bike Park season!
@commentsectiontroll: I did... hoping to see old school thrashers with 26inches dinosaurs.... until I saw that Banshee Scream.... and suddenly I thought: my good old RM Slayer SXC 2008 looks quite avant-garde compared to that
If you count the 2021 model year as current, that White/Black Aurum is 7 years old. I know, I've got one myself, although converted to 27.5/26 Mullet with a Dorado. Great geo put into place in 2014, right before they switched to 27.5 wheels.
@commentsectiontroll: My 2007 Norco Team DH had a 63.5 HA, even way back then. But it was short and tall, so still felt like crap compared to modern geo.
@commentsectiontroll: Ah come on! My Slayer basically has 68° HTA... 67,5 with a 170mm Lyric, and at Lourdes or Vallnord DH tracks I`m not the last at the bottom though... at 45y-o
@softsteel: The Banshee surely did help somewhat, though personally I was hoping to see some proper hardtails too. As for angles, a ten year old Orange DH bike has angles nicely on par with what we now consider common. For Commencal and Iron Horse this was reserved to athletes and I think Santa Cruz has been quite conservative until recently. But the Orange bikes have always been long and slack.
@Number7: Every time I mount a tire I think about this. Then I forget what the proper way is, don't feel like looking it up, and just mount the tire haphazardly.
@sino428: dude me too. I always set out to line them up and then I'll end up wresting with the tire and by the time I finally get it on its all screwed up and I don't even care any more.
@thenotoriousmic: in the days of tubes it helped find punctures. If your tube had a hole 1/3 of the way around from its valve, you knew where to look in the tire for a thorn.
@thenotoriousmic: It's just nice aesthetics, and demonstrates an attention to detail. Some racers use it as a trick to spot the valve more quickly when needing to get to it asap. Does it matter? No. But it's just a nice touch
Does anyone else keep a toothbrush with them on rides to clean the tire sidewalls so the logo's are always showing? Can never find my valves without it!
I'm really stoked for all you guys that are able to ride Whistler this year. Enjoy the trails, we outsiders are bummed to not bring our vacation dollars your way. Next year, hopefully.
So this guy from the Vintage DH Bike Facebook page was there on opening day with his BANSHEE SCREAM WITH MONSTER T's, you took pictures of him and his bike, and didn't post it here. Pinkbike always includes a "vintage" section in these Whistmas photo stories, and I'm really disappointed in you right now.
@ClintTrahan: Oh man that bike is a time machine- brings me right back to a certain era of the sport. Well played for posting and Banshee rider well played for getting out there on that beast!
@ClintTrahan@mikekazimer All is right in the world! Thanks for making it happen. I never said who took the photo, but Patrick said it was a kid from PB with a cast on his foot. I only assumed you guys had pooled the Whistmas photos before posting the story.
Anyway, thanks for responding and adding that in. Way more interesting than "another HSP".
@betweenthepines: "Well son, long before Fox and Rock Shox created a two party system for themselves, there lived a magical variety of suspension options! But then, business optimization and consolidation occurred, and things were never the same. The end."
Thanks for the help getting me up their I those pictures I was proud of the moment and hoping it would make it so thank you very much for making sure it did
The capitalisation of words randomly mid sentence IS RARELY justified. Except in situations such as this, the word needed to get out about this and it has done so. The internet thanks you for your service
@The-Foiling-Optimist: Hilarious comment. They're cool bikes, I got nothing against them. But when I see so many of the same bikes I see everywhere else, and I know of a damned cool piece of ride-able bike park history was missed out, I'm gonna shout about it (whether anyone cares or not)!
@Konastabshredder: That's awesome! The build seriously brought me right back in my head to scoping out stair cases in the community and learning sketchy drops. That seat- perfect for the build. What about some bright orange roller wheels for the chain guide?
@mikekazimer: im super proud of that day and bike and I'm thankful @mammal made sure it was recognized, I cant seem to save the picture though I was wondering if you or someone could email me a copy to pat_jones2011@hotmail.com
@mammal: You're definitely right and indeed Pinkbike has done some great pieces on older bikes at the park even last summer. My racing and north shore riding career goes back to 1986 and I was riding the Whistler bike park quite a bit in 2000-2003 so when I see the old classics I'm like "I was there!" My friend has a genuine Knolly VTach North Shore freeride special that his now 17 year old son was riding (really well) and it was just awesome but now the kid has a new Norco Range, which is lovely but lacks historical pizzazz for sure. I also love the crazy one offs made an aircraft engineer in their spare time and the bikes from small manufacturers in Europe that you never see on this side.
@brianpark: WTF are you doing not including the Banshee with Monster T's?? Pinkbike guy took his picture, told him he won the cool points for the day, then didn't include it in the article. Seriously...
I'm part of the Vintage Downhill Mountain Bike group on Facebook, and there was a guy (Patrick Jones) there with a Banshee Scream and Monster T's. They took his picture, talked about his bike, said he won the cool points for the day, then didn't include it in the damn write up. Total failure PB!!!
It's been vindicated, and they've added Patrick's smiling(ish) face and his Banshee with Monster T's as the last picture. I got down voted into oblivion, but it's well worth it to have the winner of "Most Epic Bike at Whistmas" all full of warm fuzzies today for being recognized. Let's keep WBP interesting, for years to come!
I just finished reading the Nico's Sunn Radical+ bike issue and then came here... Those new bikes, they look a little bit strang and even ugly (except for the Norco Aurum HPS)!!! Damm...
@acayuela: "American" refers specifically to citizens of the United states. It's not the same as calling someone European and speaking generically. If you want to split hairs we are actually all North Americans.
@geerumm: Creating a toxic environment by calling people enjoying Whistler opening day fat is super classy. Don't worry though, for the record, we still got em beat:
About one-quarter of Canadian adults and more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese
Would that full suspension RM reaper work as a Slopestyle bike? I think the first picture is the future me with the pretty shirt and custom bike paint. Lucky peeps, enjoy the park!
Either that Canyon is a small frame or she is running 29er wheels........its killing me because I want to know if I can put 29er wheels on my Sender lol
I just can't believe you people are taking photos without wearing your mask. They should remain on your face at ALL times. No, not because of safety (let's be real). A piece of cloth on your face serves no safety purpose, but damn they look cool. So many designs and fashions. I've been wearing a used piece of TP on my face. Both for fragrance and compliance. Everyone loves the smell of their own shit. And nobody wants to see an exposed mouth.
So while this isn't an article from a pinkbike staff, I've got to ask since pinkbike said they were going to do better:
Not many POC being represented in the photos, I thought the goal was to start showing POC to set an example to help encourage more POC to get into biking?
Not trying to hate, but photos were not very diverse.
I have literally seen one black person on trails since I started riding and I live in a fairly homogeneous area. We have a small Hispanic riding scene, but they very much stick to themselves. When you see pictures of our races and festivals it looks 100% white, it is what it is. There is no hate but it is hard to show representation of faces that aren't there. Maybe you should confront the bike sponsors who dont sponsor enough POC in the sport?
I, a POC was working on Monday so could not ride nor would I have stood in that line even if I had the day off. Rest assured though, you’ll see the lone black ranger out there sometime this week. @brianpark I got this for you!
@blkmrktrider156: You know for a fact they inflated the death count. You know they went from 3-4% death rate to a 0.6% death rate for a survival rate of 99.4%. Those are undisputed facts that are public and if you choose to ignore them that is your fault, not mine. If the death rate was never real, then this whole thing was BS. I am not saying the virus isn't real, what I am saying is the hype surrounding them, the death counts, the lockdowns all of this is isn't genuine! I know nothing about 5G, flat earth and whatever else. I am a microbiologist, hence "Bio" Coug. I know my science. They can lie to you, they cannot lie to me.
@Biocoug1: yeah so all the epidemiologists are wrong, but this one microbiologist who hangs around bike forums...he's the one who needs to save us from this mess. There were never bodies piling up in NYC, they were mannequins from the closed department stores!
@Biocoug1: Was impressed he was a Biologist AND a Cougar. Lost all credibility when he didn't explain the threat of 5g and falling off the edge of the earth
@Biocoug1: the states represents approximately 5% of the world’s population and has over 25% of the world’s confirmed cases. Can your micro brain figure that out?
@Dogl0rd: You don't get it. The numbers being inflated means this whole situation was inflated. Are you that dense? Actually, yes you are. But you go be a sheep boy......Go listen and be complicit little sheep.
@Biocoug1: calling me names isn't an argument bro, and I am not concerned with the death rate because it's high enough that the elderly and even some younger people are at risk, regardless of "inflation." If I can protect them with a mask and be compassionate I will.
@Biocoug1: By only looking for data that backs up your inherent bias, you will never find the truth. And an 'F' on the citations provided to support your "facts".
@CaptainSnappy Whats Canada's talent beside rolling over when the government decides to take your rifles under tyranny? I get it, compliance with no backbone.
@blkmrktrider156: is sheeple the same thing as being bothered by people who are eager to follow any trend in order to not be known as weird, or self reliant?
Unprecedented times
63.1 HA
ITS LITERALLY MORE CAPABLE THAN MY LAST DEMO 8
also climbs 3000m days
No.
So true. This has to be the first opening day photo spread without at least one Kona Stinky Dee-Luxe in the mix.
It's the .01% of MAGA 'Mericans at the bottom of the page here \/ that Canadians are sooo thankful are locked out.
It’s great ya
Attention to detail.

'nuff said !!!!!
I'll go through the cards again today to see. if i Have it, we'll add it to the post for sure.
Deal? =)

That's me and my banshee Thanks man I had a blast up there with it. I'm proud of restoring it and riding it the way it was ment to be ridin
would like to see the number of single crown v DH fork this year @pinkbike
Ah thanks!
Not to mention those 2 slayers with dual crowns and custom graphics. So ????
It's not a bikepark without big hits or screams.
That SX was my dream bike, it still looks great
Or anything with Shivers.
And a fair few people carrying some winter meat needing to be shifted
Boring...boring...not bad...boring...boring...reaches Banshee at the end - WHOOHOO I'VE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN!!!
(Or for some, "MY EYES! I'M BLIND!)
To paraphrase a famous quote, whenever I see a rider on a Monster T, I no longer despair for the biking race.
About one-quarter of Canadian adults and more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese
www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db211.htm
And what happens with the devinci spartan when he bottoms out his bike? With the tube and the bottle on the downtube? :/
Not many POC being represented in the photos, I thought the goal was to start showing POC to set an example to help encourage more POC to get into biking?
Not trying to hate, but photos were not very diverse.
Do better.
@brianpark I got this for you!
