I'll just send you a picture of my bike rack.

Did anyone else find themselves scrolling looking for older sweet Konas and felt a bit crushed by an ensemble of small people riding massive 29ers?

Unprecedented times
  • 37 0
@commentsectiontroll: I did... hoping to see old school thrashers with 26inches dinosaurs.... until I saw that Banshee Scream.... and suddenly I thought: my good old RM Slayer SXC 2008 looks quite avant-garde compared to that Smile
  • 21 1
@commentsectiontroll: and massively tall guys riding small dh bikes hahhaa
  • 7 0
@softsteel: "avant-garde" ;holy shit, nice man!
  • 5 1
@softsteel: A 2008 rig with head angles that start with the number 6 one would hope
  • 12 0
 @commentsectiontroll: that sx trail is a 2008 with a 66.5 ha.

If you count the 2021 model year as current, that White/Black Aurum is 7 years old. I know, I've got one myself, although converted to 27.5/26 Mullet with a Dorado. Great geo put into place in 2014, right before they switched to 27.5 wheels.
  • 1 2
@commentsectiontroll: My 2007 Norco Team DH had a 63.5 HA, even way back then. But it was short and tall, so still felt like crap compared to modern geo.
  • 5 1
@commentsectiontroll: Ah come on! My Slayer basically has 68° HTA... 67,5 with a 170mm Lyric, and at Lourdes or Vallnord DH tracks I`m not the last at the bottom though... at 45y-o Wink
  • 13 2
 @mammal: I’m on a 2020 27.5 sight mulleted.

63.1 HA

ITS LITERALLY MORE CAPABLE THAN MY LAST DEMO 8

also climbs 3000m days

 @banffowen: #samebro love it
  • 6 0
@commentsectiontroll: 10/10. That Canyon Sender looks like 49er with that girl ;]
  • 4 0
@softsteel: The Banshee surely did help somewhat, though personally I was hoping to see some proper hardtails too. As for angles, a ten year old Orange DH bike has angles nicely on par with what we now consider common. For Commencal and Iron Horse this was reserved to athletes and I think Santa Cruz has been quite conservative until recently. But the Orange bikes have always been long and slack.
  • 8 0
@mammal: There’s nothing worse than a short and tall bike.
  • 1 0
@makripper: and it rips!!! Such a fun bike!
  • 4 1
@makripper: Blue Hawaian Shirt guys Aurum is about 17 sizes too small.
  • 9 3
I can't get over how ugly the new RM Slayers are in comparison to the couple of older models shown here!
  • 3 0
@commentsectiontroll: yeah, I gotta say the small people stood out to me too.

So many valve stems not lined up with tire logos. Who are these monsters. Thank you Julia Long, you are a beacon of hope.
  • 43 30
 People actually care about that?
  • 23 0
@Number7: Every time I mount a tire I think about this. Then I forget what the proper way is, don't feel like looking it up, and just mount the tire haphazardly.
  • 18 0
better yet the first Norco Aurum with the backwards front tire - maybe the assegai works better that way??

Never understood why this was a thing.
  • 11 0
I like to make sure my valves always line up with the fork and chainstay respectively.
  • 7 0
@sino428: dude me too. I always set out to line them up and then I'll end up wresting with the tire and by the time I finally get it on its all screwed up and I don't even care any more.
  • 21 2
@thenotoriousmic: in the days of tubes it helped find punctures. If your tube had a hole 1/3 of the way around from its valve, you knew where to look in the tire for a thorn.
  • 4 4
@dockboy: why’s it an issue now then?
  • 29 1
@Number7: it doesn't matter, but... it matters
  • 18 1
@thenotoriousmic: It's just nice aesthetics, and demonstrates an attention to detail. Some racers use it as a trick to spot the valve more quickly when needing to get to it asap. Does it matter? No. But it's just a nice touch
  • 22 1
@nwitherbee: it's like building wheels so that the hub logo lines up with the valve hole.

Attention to detail.

Where does me taking the time to line up the valve stem, but putting the tire on backwards fit in?
  • 4 0
Does anyone else keep a toothbrush with them on rides to clean the tire sidewalls so the logo's are always showing? Can never find my valves without it!

I agree. I'm not really "into" retro bikes, but I have had so much advertising for '19,'20,'21 bikes that I dont care to see them anymore.
  • 38 9
So this guy from the Vintage DH Bike Facebook page was there on opening day with his BANSHEE SCREAM WITH MONSTER T's, you took pictures of him and his bike, and didn't post it here. Pinkbike always includes a "vintage" section in these Whistmas photo stories, and I'm really disappointed in you right now.
  • 15 0
I saw that! My 13 year old son was like, “dad what is that fork?” Hahahaha! History lesson while in the line up.
  • 21 0
I promise if i saw it, I would have posted it. Are you sure it was me who took the shot?

I'll go through the cards again today to see. if i Have it, we'll add it to the post for sure.

Deal? =)

Woah there, @mammal. A different photographer took that picture - I tracked it down and added that in.
  • 2 1
Scroll up. It's the last picture.
  • 6 0
@ClintTrahan: Oh man that bike is a time machine- brings me right back to a certain era of the sport. Well played for posting and Banshee rider well played for getting out there on that beast!
  • 49 0
@mikekazimer: can you also track down the videographer that fled to Kazakhstan with the Grim Donut edit?
  • 14 3
 @ClintTrahan @mikekazimer
All is right in the world! Thanks for making it happen. I never said who took the photo, but Patrick said it was a kid from PB with a cast on his foot. I only assumed you guys had pooled the Whistmas photos before posting the story.

Anyway, thanks for responding and adding that in. Way more interesting than "another HSP".

The capitalisation of words randomly mid sentence IS RARELY justified. Except in situations such as this, the word needed to get out about this and it has done so. The internet thanks you for your service
  • 3 2
@mammal: Hey it's not about just another HSP, it's about the HSP rider: "When not riding my HSP, I enjoy stand up paddling and making baguettes"
  • 3 1
@The-Foiling-Optimist: Hilarious comment. They're cool bikes, I got nothing against them. But when I see so many of the same bikes I see everywhere else, and I know of a damned cool piece of ride-able bike park history was missed out, I'm gonna shout about it (whether anyone cares or not)!
  • 1 0
@Konastabshredder: sweet ride dude! Pretty sure a couple of us saw you riding on SFU a couple of weeks back and gawked in awe at your bike.
  • 1 0
@Konastabshredder: That's awesome! The build seriously brought me right back in my head to scoping out stair cases in the community and learning sketchy drops. That seat- perfect for the build. What about some bright orange roller wheels for the chain guide?
  • 2 0
@snl1200: it has one of those old-fashioned shiftable chain-guides
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: im super proud of that day and bike and I'm thankful @mammal made sure it was recognized, I cant seem to save the picture though I was wondering if you or someone could email me a copy to pat_jones2011@hotmail.com
  • 2 0
@mammal: You're definitely right and indeed Pinkbike has done some great pieces on older bikes at the park even last summer. My racing and north shore riding career goes back to 1986 and I was riding the Whistler bike park quite a bit in 2000-2003 so when I see the old classics I'm like "I was there!" My friend has a genuine Knolly VTach North Shore freeride special that his now 17 year old son was riding (really well) and it was just awesome but now the kid has a new Norco Range, which is lovely but lacks historical pizzazz for sure. I also love the crazy one offs made an aircraft engineer in their spare time and the bikes from small manufacturers in Europe that you never see on this side.
  • 2 0
@Konastabshredder: "The way it was meant to be ridden." So you hucked to flat? Wink

I'm part of the Vintage Downhill Mountain Bike group on Facebook, and there was a guy (Patrick Jones) there with a Banshee Scream and Monster T's. They took his picture, talked about his bike, said he won the cool points for the day, then didn't include it in the damn write up. Total failure PB!!!
  • 3 0
@mammal: Hopefully there will be more to come? I always like seeing the classics and cringys
  • 10 10
It's been vindicated, and they've added Patrick's smiling(ish) face and his Banshee with Monster T's as the last picture. I got down voted into oblivion, but it's well worth it to have the winner of "Most Epic Bike at Whistmas" all full of warm fuzzies today for being recognized. Let's keep WBP interesting, for years to come!
