Iconic 4x scenes from the Leogang, the finest backdrop in the World.
The inside gate to the first turn is usually the most coveted starting gate, offering that rider a better chance to edge out the competition by pushing then outside on the first corner. But that gate has to be earned in qualifying. In Leogang, that start gate is the lane furthest from the camera, and while it may only be a few inches, it pretty much guarantees the hole shot.
Anneke Beerten may be full time now on the Enduro World Series, but she's still the one to beat for women's 4X.
German medal hope Steffi Marth, warming up once again after racing the downhill qualifying earlier in the day.
Benedikt Last won his first heat, but was edged out in qualifying by Blake Nielsen, and so Nielsen gets the better gate choice for the 1/8 finals, but last got the better gate start and the hole shot.
Scott Beaumont sprinting his Yeti out in front for team GB.
Michael Mechura set on bringing Slavik down this time, here he sets the pace early on.
Benedikt Last waltzing over the jumps on the second straight during the opening 3 of the first round.
The take down in action... Scott Beaumont getting taken down hard by Simon Wildburger in the men's semi final.
Beaumont also managed a very stylish unintentional schleyble-top before plummeting into the crowd.
A salute to the crowd and a long ride down after Scott's big bail.
Game Face: Thomas Slavik.
Only back on the 4x bike 2 weeks prior, Beerten didn't plan on downgrading the number board this race and it was clear she was still pretty close to top of her game.
Poland's Jarek Mariusz feeling out the steep pro-line doubles of the second straight.
Wheel-spinning with Sweden's Felix Beckeman.
All hail the king: Shawn Palmer super fan trackside at the 4X.
Anneke Beerten protecting her corner from Helene Valerie Fruhwirth in the quarter final.
What can be said about Slavik's skills. He rides like he has eyes in the back of his head.
Quentin Derbier thinking big.
There's clearly something about it... no wonder everyone wants a go on Slavik's bike.
Anneke never saw Katy coming from the back over the big gap while she went around and by this point in the turn, Curd's gold was wrapped up. No one could blame Beerten for giving the big one a miss after her huge crash over it last year.
Slavik edged out fellow Czech racer Michael Michura in the men's big final, taking another set of rainbow stripes.
The Women's podium with Curd flanked by second place finisher Anneke Beerten (on the left) and Steffi Marth (on the right).
Curd, Beerten and Marth share out the champers on a job well done.
Thomas Slavik with a blast of the good stuff for the crowd.
It's Mariusz Jarek - not Jarek Mariusz, Shaun Palmer - not Shawn, Tomas (Slavik) - not Thomas, (Simon) Waldburger - not Wildburger (even though "wild burger" sounds pretty cool). The photos are great, thanks Pinkbike for sharing!
Loads about Anneke when Katy won the race? Loads of names wrong? Whoever wrote this needs a labotomy. Curd was clearly the front runner after beating Anneke last year too.
a completely off topic observation involving an obscure movie ref. - Slavik looks exactly like james earl jones in Conan (1982) in the orgy scene where he turns into a snake, just before arnold and co. break in and f*ck shit up.
And Beerten IS hot. She did a calender shoot a while ago, maan! Anyhoo back on topic, nice photos of the event. The country side makes a splendid backdrop.
Thanks Rattyboy. Mountain biking needs more of this! I always say its a shame how all the Euro motor races have hot ass umbrella girls and mountain biking has none! :-(
Shaun palmer, get over yourself you tit. Back in the day you were cool in your slayer tee shirt and jeans, so why turn up now with your medals and gold clown suit? Not looking so cool any more.
