Clever play by Ratboy. Do an interview to discuss your upcoming plans, but don't include subtitles, thereby keeping your plans a complete secret.
  • + 16
 Hilarious! Perhaps Missy could interpret?
  • + 9
Best comment. I'd like to mumble and chuckle my approval.
  • + 14
There actually are subtitles! I must have tried without for 30 sec... They are not 100% accurate but it's already incredible a machine can get more than 10%.
  • + 20
Cool, so it is not just me, a Brazilian. You americans also don't get that accent. It is a nightmare trying to understand him. Even Trainspotting Movie it is easier to get than that!!!

"It,s shite being Scottish, and all the freeeesh eir in the world won't change that Tommy".
  • + 2
 Hillarious comment, but true. hahaha...
  • + 2
You win the internet today- lol
  • + 6
@robbienroll: Don't worry, 20% of what he says isn't words just noises.
  • + 89
Interested to see how it goes, the 50:1 stuff is rad and I think a move away from the big corporate MTB scene is a good thing. It certainly feels more real and kids can relate to shredding the woods or knocking up a kicker, defo inspirational, even for washed up never has beens like me!

Certtainly aint a retirement and I think we have loads more to see of the Rat
  • + 92
By knocking up a kicker, do you mean getting a ramp pregnant?
  • + 11
@Husker2112: Well I mean most ramps make a screaming noise when I hit them these days, but thats probably because am turning into a fatty
  • + 14
 @Husker2112: you mean, pergenat?
  • + 14
 @GabrielDugas: am i gregnat
  • + 0
Ya its way more fun to travel around and ride with ur friends for fun...and with media outlets like pb and huge followings(smedia) one can get paid enough during your youthful years.
  • + 8
 @GabrielDugas: Can U get pregante?
  • + 6
MTB is all about fun but the younger generation need to be aware its taken the 50:01 guys 10+years of racing to get to their current status.

Get the kids to the races, they can muck about inbetween.
  • + 6
@jrocksdh: really? You seriously think anybody except the top few guys (remember ratboy is an ex world champ!) will actually earn money from those kind of vids?! You are lucky to get trade price parts unless you are right at the top let alone cash!
  • + 1
These guys get loose and creative on everything! Much more inspiring than every other dialled bike park video.. Makes me remember the fun factor and comforts me i'm not flip whipping my way down whistler!
  • + 74
all about that Red Bull dollar. Sam Hill stepped away from the bike park tracks and destroyed an EWS within a season. #keepDHwild
  • + 60
I still think it's awesome that they are backing the Drink Water movement. Especially Ratboy stepping away from the energy drink dollars.
  • + 4
Is UCI behind this taming of tracks at all? I have no idea, just curious
  • + 6
@hetfield1: Whos knows? It may be logistically much, much harder to show the races in the steeper harder stuff. The bike park tracks likely have more infrastructure. Lighting, power, water, etc all up and down the mountain. I don't know though. I'm just an a*shole who likes rock rolls.
  • + 1
Honestly was tons of gnarly tracks this year on the WC circuit. A few parks yes but some rough fast tracks forsure! I swear all these Enduro hardcores just call the tracks tame and don't even watch WC.
  • + 10
@nismo325: I think youre right, its a strange thing at the moment, and its pretty hard for me to question the riders that actually race on these tracks but from photos and videos most of them are pretty technical and tough. For 2016 there was Lourdes, Fort William, MSA, Vallnord, Val di Sole....they are all hardcore right??

With Sam Hill i definitely think it was an excuse for not getting results he wanted and being off the pace. I have a little understanding of him (being and racing from the same town in Aus) and this fits with his personality.

Ratboy is a different animal but I cant help but feel its the same thing...pressured to get top level results, doesnt want to, motivations changed etc. Want an easy out? Blame something externally...pretty simple human behaviour.

What would be great is if some of these guys actually got a proper interview done - ie ask some critical questions. If I was in Loosedogs position my response would have been "Are Lourdes, Fort William, MSA, Vallnord, Val di Sole not technical?" and "If you are not scared and they are easy why is it so hard to win?"
  • + 3
@nismo325: I'd say somehow Josh Bryceland and Sam Hill are well aware of what the WC tracks were like this year, even if they may not have watched the Red Bull coverage on tv.

@Monarch87 Yeah I never heard of that Drink Water initiative but I like it a lot. It always struck me as odd when these professional, disciplined athletes endorse an unhealthy product. Be it tobacco or alcohol in motorsports or sugardrinks (or the sugar replacement variety) in "action sports". Of course a company like Red Bull has done a lot for the sport and for the athletes. But it is nice to have a countermovement to show the kids that the drink doesn't inherently go with the sport they love.
  • + 1
@russthedog: props for suggesting the need for more critical questions.
  • + 1
@russthedog: Hardcore sure, but 2 of those tracks you mentioned have been on the calender for over 10 years with very little changed. Same lines same sections.

Val di Sole is just utterly scary.

He's scared. He knows what it takes to win world cups, and it's scary, both in terms of physical danger, but also the preparation and pressure.
  • + 1
@vinay: Re: Energy Drinks... Nailed it.
  • + 1
@hetfield1: na not UCI. He said Red Bull TV. - make the tracks less technical , means the times are closer , means the racing is more 'exciting' from a viewer post of view. The Big Corporations will always make it work for them first unfortunately...
  • + 1
 Double post
  • - 1
@russthedog: it's probably got more to do with riding the same track for 3 days getting real boring
  • + 1
@injuryprone: I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that, including rat in this video
  • + 1
@Monarch87: good call. had no idea what this was but totally agree with it - a great cause.

www.wedrinkwater.com/pages/reason
  • + 64
Personally, i like 50:01's video's more than i like super-edited stuff from other riders with huge trick-bags. I can relate way more, and the steez is just bigger with those guys, you really see how fun they are having.

Stay true, never sell out.
  • + 50
Interesting comments about RedBull calming the tracks (and Warner) down..
  • + 14
very interesting. If it's redbull who's leading the taming of tracks, then that'd be good to know so we can direct our ire at them.
  • + 31
I think everyone would agree, Send Peaty into the booths with a case or two under arm!!!........ Claudio's great at his thing, but respectfully not the BEST color man. Have Claudio do his previews, track walks, maybe some insightful interviews, since he knows the sport and industry top to bottom. That's personally what I'd love to see!
  • + 6
@JC9won4: dude...! I totally agree, Steve and Cam all the way... but still love that Claudio
  • + 13
@JC9won4: Let's just keep Warner and Claudio and add Peaty. Guaranteed to be a party. Besides Peaty and Warner can reminisce.
  • + 15
I might be remembering incorrectly but it seemed this past season at almost every race the riders were commenting on how gnarly the tracks were. I can understand Redbull wanting to make Warner more professional for their broadcast as they are trying to bring more people in but the idea that Redbull wants to tone down the tracks doesn't make sense. This is the same company that when it comes to Rampage is accused of making things too gnarly and unsafe, but in terms of world cup tracks they want to tone it down? What would be the reason?
  • + 3
@sino428: right... I think redbull is confused, it should be the other way around, maybe rampage can be toned down a bit but let UCI / WC DH keep doing its thing, fast and gnarly tracks down natural mountain terrain (that's the whole point I thought).
  • + 3
@neorider: So... you think Val di Sole, Valnord, Mt Ste Anne and Lourdes are tame? have you actually seen these races live?
  • + 1
@forecast01: I don't remember saying these tracks, or any UCI / WC DH tracks are tame...? and I have only seen the races on redbull
  • + 1
 I like Warner to
  • + 1
@neorider: oops - you didn't. I think my point is that this thread seems to be leaning toward a theory that Redbull is toning down the tracks and from what I have seen, I dont think that is true. Convenience, familiarity, spectator friendly and other logistical reasons would seem more likely to me, why they are repeating tracks. Not sure Cairns fits my theory though. As for the courses I have seen live, TV doesn't come close to capturing how gnarly they actually are.
  • + 1
@forecast01: no prob, I'm sure them tracks are gnarly as all get up ... maybe some dudes here are getting worried or carried away about the redbull/media rumblings... in all actuality, I don't think UCI will allow redbull to "censor" their DH tracks... at least let's hope that never happens.
  • + 32
lol can I get some subtitles?
  • + 13
Turn on subtitles / closed captions. It provides no clarity whatsoever.
  • + 18
 Right?!

I can speak English pretty well, but I'm really not fluent in Brycelandish.
  • + 5
@pinkrobe: It actually makes it sooo much better! Didn't last 30 seconds without bursting out in laughter! "I don't know - but - why do I love bikes" got turned into "Did have that they're wide old bags".
  • + 26
@LadLife So much respect to Josh for speaking up against energy drinks marketing, and I quote "all that marketing BS!". As an environmental science student and someone that cares about health and well being of us and our planet, we need the ambassadors of our sport to speak up about the fallacies and shortcomings of the industry that threaten our planet and our health. I remember Josh sharing a Greenpeace link on deforestation a few years back; if more ambassadors spoke up on these things then it would influence their fans into shifting their perspective into thinking about sustainability and making it cool.
So much love for the Rat Smile
  • + 10
Yeah it's kind of funny the way he's grown up so close to peaty but they have completely different approaches to this. It's difficult to say a bad word against Steve and I know he's just trying to be professional but his monster placement in his videos is so unsubtle it's just a bit cringey.
  • + 4
@el-nombre: cringey maybe, but its his Job, we all have one and his is to promote his contracted sponsors.

Josh has highlighted important aspects of Red Bull and similar sponsors impacts upon the sport but the bottom line is that most DH racers have a short career and If they dont earn while doing it the future will be pretty difficult financially.
  • + 4
Greenpeace?! f*cking hell, if he believes they are saving anything and are a shining example to follow then he is just utterly ignorant.
  • + 2
I consider myself very environmentally conscious and very much promote grassroots environmentalism but I gotta tell ya, Greenpeace is a corrupt crock of shit. Do some research into their organization and you'll realize it's all money and politics like any other big political organization. Other than that I agree with you!
  • + 26
Rat got tired of drinking vinegar and waiting 11 days to clear for urine tests.....

Gonna miss his riding on the circuit. I'd imagine just wants some time off, the kids been racing pro since he was a jr, what over 10 years now?
  • + 17
i am sure blowing up his ankle and world champs didn't help his motivation
  • + 7
@adrennan: yer I can see that. I wonder if it basically highlighted just how much you have risk to be competitive these days?
  • + 24
Super talented and a great lad, personally think it's a real loss for world cup DH. Hopefully he'll get an invite for the hard line this year, that'd be a mint event to see the rat ride. All the best for the future
  • + 12
From what I hear on the internet, I dont think Ratboy and Gee get along too well so doubt we'll see him make an appearance at Hard Line unfortunately
  • + 9
@JamieMcL: and after this I doubt red bull like him much either.
  • + 16
@JamieMcL: wouldn't it be funny though if Dan invited the rat just to wind Gee up!
  • + 1
@djm35: why would Redbull not like him? He was only ever affiliated with monster wasn't he?
  • + 4
@el-nombre: because he's just told us that they are taming the wc tracks and influencing Warners commentary.
  • + 1
@djm35: fair enough about the tracks I guess but the Warner thing has been common knowledge for years.
  • + 1
@JamieMcL: Not sure if I'd believe much of what I read on the net...
  • + 19
I'm a sever stutterer. People always tell me they struggle to understand me when we first meet, but that they have no problem understanding me after they've known me for a while. Every time I watch a Bryceland interview, I go through a mini version of the same thing. The first minute is unintelligible, but by the end it's clear as day.
  • + 19
 Click subtitles for comedy purposes.
  • + 11
haha google's auto subs ain't ready for mancunian!
  • + 11
What a character! I'm happy to see lots of the top riders slating the bike park theme at world cups
  • + 2
 Why?
  • + 7
Bryce is a legend, can't wait to see what you do in 2017. Best of luck for the future and thanks for all the memorable memories.
  • + 3
Red bull are trying to make DH more appealing to the general public. To do this they need cameras on track and for that they need access. Unfortunately that usually means the tracks get tamer....good or bad I'm not sure tracks are getting "worse" but viewing figures attract sponsors and money into the sport.

Also Red Bull do push the boundrys, look at hardline, the money they put into that even is crazy! But not sure why Josh didn't want to be involved in that one.
  • + 1
Ssshhhhh, don't contradict the mighty rat or people will be angry. Of course, they all want the sport to succeed and be popular so the riders can make decent money and entertain, but don't suggest reasons for how that will be made possible if it goes against the words of ratboy, oh no.
  • + 5
Gutted! No Stevie no Peaty no Josh............ Cant wait to see rat doing all the new stuff but stil....l gutted.
  • + 4
Nothing wrong with taking a break. I think he should have just said that....
  • + 3
Maybe he didn't say it was a break because maybe it isn't a break. It'd be awesome if he came back in a year or two but he never said he would.
  • + 1
I hope he comes back to the sport one day again cos he was there, but who knows how bad he fu*cked his foot up that time I know they say it's better but that shits plays with your head as well.Good luck to him .honestly!!!!!
  • + 3
Could it be time to put together a showcase scary DH series of say 3 races, that are super technical? Maybe Josh should do that?
  • + 5
 Sausage = Brown Sauce
Bacon = Red Sauce
  • + 3
I do both together regardless of the sausage/bacon/egg combination. Does that make me a bad person?
  • + 6
What is Brown Sauce? Do I want to know?
  • + 1
 @marcsb95c: no stick to Ketchup
  • + 3
 @marcsb95c:
Red sauce = Ketchup.
As for Brown Sauce, I can't really describe it so I've resorted to Wikipedia. "Brown sauce, or 'HP Sauce' has a malt vinegar base, blended with tomato, dates, tamarind extract, and spices"
Basically it's awesome and is a must-have with bacon sandwiches.
  • + 1
 Brown on bacon.
  • + 3
I worked at a summer camp in America and took loads of brown sauce with me for the kids to try. It was hilarious! Most of them didn't like it much, but they were super curious. And when asked "But what IS brown sauce?" I would simply reply "Well, it's sauce. That is brown."

HP on everything. Ketchup is fo' pussies.
  • + 4
So someone is going to pay Josh to ride his bike but not race?
  • + 19
If they're smart they will. I think there's alot of value to the way Bryceland depicts the sport for new and seasoned riders alike. His edits, riding style, and persona are a blast to watch. The roadtrip edits and shred sessions are more relatable to the average rider than the World Cup DH scene is anyways.
  • + 7
He sells a shit load of bronsons I can tell you that for fact. The amount of bronsons I see round here with a 50:01 marsh guard on is untrue.
  • + 5
@thenotoriousmic: you know you can buy the marsh guard without the Bronson right? Razz
  • + 2
 It works for macaskill
  • + 1
@thenotoriousmic: funny that besides his madeira vid which was the introduction video for the v2 bronson he is always riding his 5010 :-)
  • + 1
@orastreet1 Isn't that what Specialized do for Matt Hunter? Give him a bike, go ride it, make a video, dream job really.
  • - 3
@bme2015: Indeed. But Matt is professional and Ratboy always come across as a complete t%$t to me
  • + 0
@el-nombre: yeah but your riding a bronsons with a 50:01 mud guard you've clearly been heavily influenced by bryceland haven't you?
  • + 2
So where does that leave the "Spirit of DH" if I wanted heart rate monitors or Ect I'd be watching XC, it's a sad dark day for World Cups...
  • + 2
Usually I watch long youtube videos speeded up as far as I can understand the language. Here reducing speed doesn't help to understand those guys.
  • + 0
hahahhah Big Grin one of the best, if not the best! mtb interviews ive ever watched :d this guy makes me laught all the time, so honest and relaxed hahaah, feels like even when he is racing wrold cups , he has big f****** smile behind the helmet
big respect
  • + 1
Redbull banned booze in the commentary box. I can't see Peaty rolling with that. Its great to see a top level guy like ratty take a step aside from things and remind us all that love and laughs matter more than dollars.
  • + 3
So 'Ross Noble' isn't riding WC anymore.... lol
  • + 1
You gotta stick with what is fulfilling to you - even if it's not popular. Cheers bud. I'll miss you this summer - but I'm proud of you.
  • + 3
santacruz trc , what a bike
  • + 4
 what did he say'
  • - 1
Any chance SC have given him a year off to sort his priorities out before riding for the team again?
A big pro outfit like SC don't need off bike shenanigans or failed tests (not saying that he has!).
Plus will give him some time out off the touring to do stuff like this.
I'm a big Miami fan (and from Manc) but just being realistic about what we've see last few years and the obvious World Champ standard riding he is capable of.
  • + 6
somewhere at the comment section on Youtube he (?) says he´s still on the Syndicate

regarding the benefit for the sponsor, I think he and the team gained enough value to let him do what he want besides WC. I mean he generates attention and that´s what sell´s them bikes, his attitude just pais off
  • - 1
I already had a lot of respect for Ratboy, but now I have way more! (Ali-G respect for him)

I can only assume: If the WC circuit gets in the way, and doesn’t fully facilitate a platform towards achieving his personal and/or company goals/plans/projects etc, then, it makes complete sense to take a step away. Why wouldn’t you…?

It’s flexible and adaptable people in the industry (whatever the industry) who survive. With his 10+ years of industry connections, and rubbing shoulders with creatives like SteelCityMedia (and many many more I’m sure), the biggest bike companies in the business, of course things will spark off and spiderweb. No doubt.

Naturally, there will be a whole lot of support for him, already being expressed here from his fans. Whatever direction he progresses into, he’s a very likeable character, oozing with more style on a bike than you can shake a stick at. WC racing or not, he'll have fans.

To counteract that though, (naturally…) there are some negative vibes being expressed here. People who are dishing out gloomy comments and opinions … Whilst presumably you sit there in your dark bedroom, still living with your parents...farting away...treating yourself to fists full of homemade cupcakes … cranking yourself to sleep, into a pillow of empty dreams … consider trying not to compare your cupcake-cranking existence to RatBoy’s existence, or anyone else that you have an urge to sh*t on, for that matter. Because, it kind of sounds like you are. Instead, take some inspiration from it into your own life.

Put yourself into his shoes for just a moment…just imagine...at 26 years old, a successful and experienced DH career to date…major sponsors, the “dream” yeah, isn’t it? …. to then make the choice of stepping out the WC circuit, knowing you will be in the firing line of criticism, then get asked the inevitable questions of; "so what next? What next? What next??” …… That takes balls! SteelCityBalls, RatBalls, whatever kind of balls you’re into, it takes a lot of them.

What doesn't take balls, is radiating pessimism. There is a human on the other end, receiving your negativity. Comments posted marinaded with varying amounts of venom, are just highlighting the fact, that the person who posted it shouts out loud: “something in my life just now is crap! So I’m going to crap on someone else! Everything’s crap! Crap crap crap!"

Hence why I encourage; take inspiration from Ratboy.

If not, at least show some respect towards him.

Me personally, I’m excited to see what unfolds in his new chapter, and wish him all the best!

Keep it raw Rat!
  • + 3
 What?
  • + 1
Keep it up rat!! Love the stuff u do..... oh....and.... your my favourite pro rider cud u r rad af! Big Grin
  • + 1
 english?!?!?!
all this time and the guy was speaking english????
thought it was a language of his own....
  • - 2
I think 90% of riders dream of being in the position he's in right now and he's just like just going to walk away from it?! He doesn't know how lucky he is. That being said I can't be disappointed with someone for not wanting to send it down World Cup tracks putting his neck on the line. He's got to do what's best for him but he's just got his peak now and I hope he's not going to do something he's going to look back and regret. Wish him all the best in the future and I'll always be a massive fan so I wish him all the best and I'm excited to see what he does next. Just hope he doesn't waste that talent a career in racing is short.
  • + 13
I recently spoke to another UK rider on the WC, he said he had been home for about 12 weeks in 2016, seemed to spend all his time packing and unpacking his bike. Sounds wild to someone who doesn't do it, maybe after 10 years and increasingly heading to bike parks rather than wc tracks you can see why it looses its appeals
  • + 3
@usmbc-co-uk: yeah totally. The grass might not be greener on the other side. He knows as well as anyone. If it's not fun anymore then what's the point?
  • + 7
What @usmbc-co-uk said. I worked in Motorsport for several years and it's true, what outsiders see as glamorous and a great opportunity quickly becomes exhausting and often verges on downright monotonous, especially if like Ratty said, you're putting in all that effort just to turn up and ride/race a Bike-Park track that you don't enjoy.
Fair play to the lad for standing up for himself and what he wants from life. He's been with SC for so long now he could become a great brand ambassador, release some awesome wild edits and ride what/where he wants how he wants. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes out with now he's free from the constraints of the WC regime.
  • + 0
@gibbon-on-an-orange: couldn't have said any better myself, congrats to the Rat for living the dream... and beyond
  • + 2
 Water. Crankworks. Ride loads. Dialed.
  • + 2
So Claudio was right then in respect to him retiring from racing DH.
  • + 6
He would have been right if he said not riding world cups in 2017. Its all conjecture but he is gonna be racing other stuff and I think will be a presence on the scene, probably as much as he currently is. Interesting too he didnt sound like he is ditching syndicate or SC
  • + 46
what claudio said was far from right, someone in his position should me more careful about the statements they make. joking or not. i thought it was extremely unfair to put that spin on josh's decision especially before josh had made a statement himself. gotta big up rat for not rising to the BS, so much positivity around the movement, its going to be all time Smile Smile Smile much love... josh L
  • + 2
I expect to race someplace to earn the points ready to return into the worldcup scene
  • + 1
@LadLife: yes brother!, the way to go should be 'ride your bike and spread good vibes instead of bullshit and rumours' one love! Smile
  • + 1
@LadLife: Class as always. Keep it up.
  • + 6
@LadLife: Claudio is media at the end of the day, and he was half right. A bit naive to expect media silence if it was out there in the paddock as it's big news for alot of people.
  • + 2
@usmbc-co-uk: in the youtube comments he said he is still part of the syndicate and sc.
Sorry for neg,didnt mean to.cheers
  • + 2
@LadLife: Let it go. It was a slip up. Think about the stuff that has spewed out of your own mouth in your life, only there might not have been a microphone to catch it.

Claudio didn't do damage to any rep Bryce land has built up.
  • + 1
I want to know if he was named after the character in the viz comics.

  • - 2
@zorba73: stop trying to be a smart ass
  • + 0
@zorba73: He used a full stop so his punctuation was correct.
  • + 2
@mgolder: Well he didn't capitalise the "S" so technically his punctuation was incorrect. However, we all understood what was said regardless of the punctuation.

I'm glad we can moan about punctuation and grammar when an iconic rider has decided to move away from WC DH.

All the best Rat Boy, you know we (mostly) love you.
  • + 1
@that-monster: People move on, plus some people aren't that bothered he has left. Not everyone has to bow down in reverence at the news.
