661 Mini Downhill Races 2009

Jan 8, 2009
by Si Paton
The 661 MINI DOWNHILL RACE is back in town at the Forest of Dean. Big news if you're a "Mini Ripper" there will be a 10-11 year old class!

Get your diary out and mark in Sunday 22nd February 2009.

More info here>>>661 MINI DOWNHILL RACE 2009 - Forest of Dean!

Mini downhill is a new and fun way to race downhill. It's aimed at new riders to the sport to cut their teeth into whilst they dream about racing the Nationals!

There will also be a Pro-Am section for the fast guys, guaranteed you will learn something from watching and trying to follow them down the track.

Two timed races runs and as much practice as your little legs will allow as there is no uplift. Bumper prizes from MMA Distribution who will be flowing SixSixOne (661), Sunline and Royal Products left right and center..

Date Changes

We have had to swap around the dates advertised because the Forestry will start felling trees in Forest of Dean in March, the new dates are:
Sunday 22nd February 09 - Forest of Dean.
Sunday 29th March 09 - Chicksands.

NEW 10 & 11 Years old and want to race downhill?
The minimum age for DH in the UK is 12 years old but we are always getting asked by parents “their son is 11 year’s old and really wants to start racing." Great news is Mini Downhill’s are the only races approved by British Cycling to have 10&11 year old kids racing downhill. We made the “Rippers” age category just for them, so tell your little brother to get his bike out and he can start racing.

Date: Sunday 22nd February 09

Location:
Forest of Dean, Cannop Valley, Coleford, Gloucestershire, GL16 7EH

Times:
Practice 9.00am – 10.45am
Race Starts (2 x runs) 11.00am – 3.30pm
Prize Presentations 3.45pm

Background:
Forest of Dean is a hot spot for mountain bikers for XC & DH with 100’s of riders turning up every weekend. Chris Roberts race organizer said, "There are hundreds of people who ride at the Forest of Dean that have never raced, therefore we have brought a race to their local track. The course is fun and flowing to ride and a real challenge to ride flat out on the limit". The event is open to any one to try downhill, no need for a race license so tell your friends and get your bike ready!

The last race was a great success and liked by riders and spectators who lined the short course and the Pro-am was won by Rowan Sorrel.

Description:
Top names from UK Mountain biking are taking part in the pro am race. The riders will be competing against the clock to get the fastest time. Two-timed runs, the winner is the rider with fastest single time. The course is around 60 seconds long. This makes the race really intense where every single second counts.

Race categories:
Rippers – Age 10-11
Juvenile – Age 12-14
Youth – Age 15-16
Senior – Age 17-29
Master – Age 30+
Ladies – Open
Pro-Am – open to any experienced racers, Pro or Semi pro and there will be cash prizes!!

Course
There are loads to choose from in the forest including such names as the Corkscrew, Rocky and the Sheep's Head. The actual course will be revealed closer to the event so expect a fun & flowing track and a great challenge for this one off event.

Commentary
Heading up the microphone we have pulled in the best in the land, none other than Si Paton who will keep you entertained and informed on the days racing and the riders.

Live Timing
The latest Tag Huer timing equipment shows each individual riders time down to 1/1000 of a second at the finish. This makes the competition really intense where every single second counts.

Trade Stand
To keep you on track with all your spares and repairs we have secured the guys from www.Descent-Gear.com who will be turning up with their big van rammed full of all the essentials and latest goodies and some one off Forest of Dean Racers Specials!

Medical
Extreme Medics will provide the best possible Paramedic care for any one who tries just a little bit to hard! - We always recommend body protection but you must wear full face helmet to race.

Parking
There is parking for hundreds of cars on the forest road, so tell your friends and family to come down and watch all the race action. Forestry Commission parking charge is £3 per car.

If you get some good snaps or shoot a good 1-2mins of edited video footage and can get it loaded by Monday lunchtime onto Pinkbike.com then drop me a mail once you've loaded them up and your name could be up there in lights..
