8 New Athletes Added to 2019 Red Bull Rampage Line Up

Aug 8, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

Eight Wild Card athletes have today been added to the 2019 Red Bull Rampage roster. The Wild Card athletes were chosen by the Red Bull Rampage Committee — consisting of pro riders Cam McCaul, Aaron Chase, Nico Vink, Randy Spangler, Dave Smutok along with event organizer Todd Barber — and are invited based on the following criteria: past results from similar big bike contests, proven skill, and current video segments.

Among them are former champions Brandon Semenuk and Cam Zink as well as medal winners Gee Atherton, Antoine Bizet, Carson Storch, and Graeme Agassiz. Vinny T, who finished 12th last year, is getting the call up this year. Rounding off the list is Reece Wallace, who earned a spot for the first time since 2015 thanks to a succession of rowdy edits. All 8 will join the list of ten pre-qualified athletes that can be found here.

Not the day Brandon Semenuk was hoping for.

The list of confirmed athletes includes:

 Amped to see what Gee can do. That gap to wallride still one of the rowdiest moves in Rampage history.
  • + 31
 I like Rampage Gee. He isn't lord bummer there and he can definitely send and ride fast af while doing it.
  • + 56
 The course preview is going to be siiiiiick
  • + 52
 I'm guessing Dan is helping him build... Can't wait to see his line.
  • + 11
 I watched him hit that wall ride from right next to the takeoff. I still can't wrap my mind around it- you can't see the landing from the take-off, and the physics of how you can be moving one direction but land on a feature facing the other direction baffles me.
  • + 13
 Better beef up those 3D Printed Atherton Bike links.
  • + 32
 He's good coz he rides with his brother at hardline.
  • + 73
 @chyu: He's good cuz he races with his sister in World Cups

  • + 3
 @hamncheez: would've been more wild to see Romaniuk/Doerfling land it from the other more beastly takeoff
  • + 10
 Yea as long as he doesn’t get robbed for originalinality like Brendogg!

 @hamncheez: downvote! Always PB during work.

 @hamncheez: YES, best comment.

 @SnowshoeRider4Life: lord bummer?!

 @mulv1976: Team Robot
  • + 3
 @hamncheez: That's crazy because I was right next to you then, haha. I'm in the blue shirt on the second frame. It was so insane to witness and couldn't be happier he got an invite!! You going again?
  • + 3
 Honestly surprised to see such positive posts about Gee. Completely expected to hear an avalanche of old and washed up.
  • + 2
 @scott-townes: Nah, got wife, kids, and a mortgage now. This was 9 years ago. I can't find myself in the footage, so I must have been back a little bit.

@colemanb I guess where you work, pinkbike is perfectly appropriate
  • + 4
 @hamncheez: Shit man, its only a weekend and 60 bucks. But I get it, we can't all be free at the very moment its announced online the same day tickets are available and also free to purchase them the second before they're available before they sell out in 5 mins... otherwise you're paying some scumbag scalper $200... I missed 2017 because of that. I hope you can make it down again before its all said and done!

 @fartymarty: By the time Dan Atherton finishes digging Gee's line, Google will have to update it's maps!

 No Jordie for a wild card, wild also. Hopefully he crushes it at Proving Grounds so we can see what could've been in 2018 on his line

 GEE ATHERTON! Sorry, just hadn't realised this until now. So sick!

 With a qualifying event like Proving Ground, I think that anyone not auto-selected should have to attend if they want to get in. I understand the concept of bringing back big names like Aggy or Gee, but it seems a bit backwards that up and comers that are trying to get a call back like DJ Brandt or newbie Jaxson Riddle have to go compete and someone like Gee who hasn't done freeride stuff in years just gets a discretionary entry because of his name.

flag deco1 (Aug 8, 2019 at 8:59) (Below Threshold)
 100% agree both Atherton and Aggy should definitely not be there.
  • + 4
 I can agree to this, or have qualifying a month early at an old venue. No sand bags. Ride what's there and what you can fix with a shovel and 1 digger.
  • + 7
 They need him to do the course previews man
  • + 15
 @deco1: Aggy should 100% be in ... He is a potential Rampage winner if he gets his run. He's proved that he sends it bigger and faster than most of the line up. Gee is definitely an interesting choice though, I wonder if he will even except the wildcard.
  • + 0
 @leon-forfar: yeah I would agree like 3 years ago.
  • + 9
 Gee and Aggy been on the podium. DJ had an average performance last year and Jaxon is a baby that appeared on the scene recently. Look at E-Boy...first Rampage...got 3rd. Now he's a staple. DJ had a chance last year and did not have life changing run...Fingers crossed for Jaxon making it in but look at Reece...dude has proven himself over and over and got his spot this year...now on him to prove he deserves it.
  • + 2
 Not really up to scratch in terms of freeride, but personally Gee & Aggy were probably brought back just to see what they can do (after they’re respective time away from Rampage). Just my initial thoughts, but I can’t imagine Red Bull has brought them in solely from they’re ‘name’, per say.
  • + 1
 Agreed
  • + 24
 Gee has two Rampage silver medals to his name and races Hardline every year. He's already proven himself
  • + 20
 Gee won Hardline last year, and that is tech AF he totally belongs at Rampage, I have noticed their bike is being pushed a bit and it's not quite ready yet, so I guess its a bit of marketing for the Athertons as well. I had a day at their new park at Dyfi 2 weeks ago and with the level of financial risk they have going on I wish Gee good luck at Rampage, the whole family is so invested in bikes they deserve to do well.
  • + 4
 It’s not discretionary at all these guys all submitted videos to a panel of judges to get selected, you could argue that the video submission is more fair than Proving Grounds because no one is losing out over a flat tire for example. Although I can’t wait for Proving Grounds I think it’s good they’re keeping the video submissions, at least until Proving Grounds can prove itself I guess.

  • + 15
 Jaxon Riddle needs an invite. There is nobody his age doing what he's doing. He throws down quite a bit more tricks than he's willing to show us on IG. 17 years old and doing TONS to progress the sport for new generations.
  • + 4
 JAXSON FOR RAMPAGE!
  • + 9
 i feel like kade edwards or kaos seagrave would get an invite first
  • + 3
 They’re stylish but Jaxon is freestylish

 Mostly a Standard list of people we are used to seeing at rampage. Kinda weird seeing Agassiz semenuk and atherton as “wildcards” but I am glad to watch these heavy hitters

 Seeing Reece Wallace's name made my day.
  • + 8
 Nice, Antoine Bizet back at Rampage! He's gonna win this year, you heard it here first
  • + 25
 doubt it. he will double flip then ride a mediocre line compared to everyone else then pinkbike commenters will argue he got robbed. Rampage isn't about tricks.
  • + 19
 @SnowshoeRider4Life: RAMPAGE ISNT ABOUT TRICKS!! thank god some one else realizes this, its the progression of freeride. hopefully the judges can recognize that and stop making it a slopestyle event with some big drops.
  • + 22
 @grundletroll: Tricks shouldn't weighted the same.

Line Difficulty - 35%
Amplitude - 35 %
Fluidity - 20%
Tricks - 10%

 @SnowshoeRider4Life: Tricks should weigh heavy. This is the only big bike comp there is. If dudes are double back'ing DH bikes, it should count more than hitting a drop.
  • + 8
 @chriskneeland: they have slopestyle for that
  • + 12
 @SnowshoeRider4Life: Yeah, like in 2018, the year Brendog won with a superb line.

Oh, wait....

  • + 1
 @SnowshoeRider4Life: upvote this 10,000 times!
  • + 3
 @The-Mango-Kid: Bahaha, exactly. If you ride a line with no tricks then you're out of the top ten. Anyone saying rampage isn't about tricks hasn't been watching for 10 years.
  • + 3
 @chriskneeland: @the-mango-kid

It's more about WHERE you do the tricks. Look at where Ethan went from like 10th to 3rd in his first rampage. Flat spinning on a long and low on the ridge and a suicide into a double drop. Not huge tricks but in risky areas.

Bizet in 2012 flipping on a spine at the top of his run in the steepest section.

Vanderham winning best trick with a no-hander on the canyon gap in 2008 when there were numerous three-drops, tailwhips, and other flips.

goes on and on.

also *mic drop*
  • + 0
 @SnowshoeRider4Life: It'd be mic drop if there wasn't the issue of inconsistent judging. The event's culture changes every year. Man-made vs. natural features. Tricks vs. steep lines. In the end it's a mix of both that wins. Sorge, Andreu, Rheeder, Semenuk...all examples of that.
  • + 3
 This announcement just made my day. Can't wait to see Gee riding, on HIS OWN BIKES, even if he doesn't trick much I know he's a wild man enough to be top 10 without flips. Can't wait to see Bizet ride too, let's hope he freerides more this year, and still keeps his double backy, would just be insane I'm also so pumped about zink let's hope he land a cashroll, and semenuk doing it on a slope-s bike

  • + 3
 @kleinblake: Yeah, 9 years ago... He just hasn't done much in terms of Freeride in years. Sure he is still a beast at DH and crazy tracks, i.e. Hardline, but he just doesn't have the tricks or style. Fairclaugh showed last year that just tech lines won't score well... I feel like Kade Edwards would have been a better choice with his recent Fest series antics.
  • + 0
 @MikeyMT: How does showing off his bike company benefit the event or Redbull? It's not like he chose whether or not he got invited...
  • + 26
 @millsr4:
Brendog was still the people´s champion though.
Viewers like seeing the stuff guys like Fairclough and Gee build and ride.
Hell, i´m 100% certain i´ll like Gee´s run much more than the basic sloestyle stuff some of the other guys put out.
If it wasn´t for those few racers and some of the gnarly big mountain specialists, i´d have lost interest in Rampage years ago.
I think it´s great they keep bulding a diverse field of athletes rather than just selecting them based on their trick portfolio. Now they just need to adjust their scoring system to refelct the big mountain focus of the event instead of making it a huge slopestyle event.
  • + 5
 @millsr4: I think you're a bit naive my friend. Guaranteed the Atherton's approached Redbull saying Gee wanted to be back in (to market the bike). dude has been on the podium (has proven himself), and is a Redbull athlete. They would be hard pressed not to let him in.

  • + 3
 Competed in the past and won red bull hard-line last year , stoked to see him included
  • + 1
 @millsr4: you just blew my mind by saying that was 9 years ago
  • + 6
 @chriskneeland: lol. Jaxon is not even 18 I believe so probably legally cannot compete. SIlva has a broken femur. McFarlane has never completed a run at Rampage...tell me again why Aggy and Gee who have been on the Podium don't deserve to be there?
  • + 0
 @MikeyMT: Who was questioning whether Aggy should be there?!
  • + 1
 @kleinblake: Twice!
  • + 1
 @endlessblockades: DEMOCRACY!
  • + 1
 @millsr4: Maybe he might lack some of the tricks of some other riders but style? The dude is one of the best all around bike riders in the world. He won the WC overall, 2 time world champ, finished 2nd at rampage twice, won hardline, etc.

Watch him on the Dirt Jumper in this video from a few years ago (starts around 5:00). Hard to say the guy doesn't have any style. He even throws a few backflips in there too.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw8_ONe7hpk
  • + 0
 @sino428: Style has nothing to do with winning races... Style is also subjective and I don't think his looks particularly good... sorry bad phrasing on my part, he has style but I just don't like it. I've seen plenty of his riding over the years and just about every other rider on this year's list has better style IMO.

PS. I saw that video when it was released, all you proved to me by re-watching it is that Dan has better style than Gee lol.

 Might just be wanting to show his sister how to catch big air.

 @MikeyMT: why 18? Kyle was up there at 14 or something wasn't he?

Thoroughly disappointed. His lines the last few years were nuts! (Just a shame they were so nuts no-one could actually ride them the whole way down).

 While it is all great with Gee and the rest of the deserved talent getting the nod... the best thing this year, and I am standing up for, are the original superheros making it ..Chase and Spangler!! F#@k yeah !!!
  • + 1
 What are the odds Aggy debuts a new Evil DH bike? I can't help but feel like an Insurgent or Wreckoning would be crushed there, but I would get a laugh out of seeing a 29'' trail bike huck
  • + 1
 Owning both an Insurgent and a 2015 Kona Operator I can attest. The insurgent is no freeride bike compared to the Operator. Aggy would be better off showing up on a 2013 Undead.
