Apr 24, 2013
by Red Bull Bike

It has been several months since Aaron Gwin made his well-publicised move from Trek World Racing to the Specialized factory team. Now at home in his new set-up we caught up with the two-time World Cup Champion to talk training, Troy Lee and the new season.

It's pretty tough not to respect the guy. That's about as down to earth as it gets.

@dave-m; I'd up-vote you twice if it was allowed, a true professional as well.
  • 7 0
 He looks fast! ;-)
  • 8 1
Huge respect for this guy! He`s at the top of the game but still being modest and true to himself.
  • 10 1
Such a humble guy, such a good attitude. Represents our sport well!

Gwin seems wiser than his age and comfortable in saying exactly what he thinks. I like that he's not trying to put out an image other than being dedicated to his profession and honest about being in business with his sponsors. Well done! Thank you for representing our sport so well.

Down to earth? He just made an advertisement for Specialized, TLD and Fox. Just earned his paycheck regardless of how he does racing. Watch the kids run out and buy buy buy.
  • 5 3
all the kids run TLD Fox and Specialized so nothing is going to change

I got more out of this video than I do most VODs... Really grounded dude too.. gets me stoked to ride

It seems that, despite his obvious skill with a bike, Gwin doesn't have the greatest reputation on the internets, especially since he left Trek. I think he was just doing what was best for him, and it's easy to say that he should have stayed with Trek but it's his prerogative and when you put so much time and effort into something you want to optimize your chances at winning in every (legal) way possible.

I think he comes across as a humble, well spoken and very dedicated athlete who is taking the sport to the next level.

Agreed. Any idiot can be a loud mouthed asshat, but it takes a true champion to keep calm, take care of themselves and ensure their success. I loved his line about not worrying about others or even racing them -- he's just doing what he does and doing his best at it. It's nice to see this, especially in such an over-the-top-exposure world that we live in.
  • 13 1
 haha whats an asshat?
  • 8 1
It's nice to see him getting so much respect nowadays. When he first came onto the scene everyone was so quick to jump down his throat just because of his nationality. Then after that the drug accusations started, then it was because he was "boring" had no "soul" didn't smile enough, then it was because he has no "style". Now people are cheering him on just like we all do for the rest of the riders. It's a welcome change. It's how it should be. Rooting for all the riders. Except people who flip trucks and burn them...

it's an ass for a hat, instead of a normal baseball cap. akin to the butt face and dick head.
  • 2 0
Haha and that concludes the lesson for today

My home trail, needs some shovel time
  • 6 0
Does everyone gap to the upramp of the next jump and then huck to flat like we saw him do a few times.
  • 2 0
Hoolydooly - he can do that kind of stuff because he is Gwindestructable.
  • 2 0
And a water truck! Those hits are the "Buckerman's"
  • 1 0
Hell yea T lets getva water truck haha
  • 22 3
why does he always look so stoned
  • 18 3
He's using John Tomac as a fitness coach who has "been there", not a golf coach like Danny Hart is using.
  • 2 0
It'll be cool if JT puts him through a similar program to the one he went through....so maybe we'll see Gwin riding this year's Tour of Britain road race ! (I seem to remember Tomac riding the 1989 Milk Race).
  • 5 3
^^^^ I noticed that! Not sure why Danny admitted his trainer works with golfers. WTF??
  • 7 0
Anyone who has ever gapped a sand trap in a golf cart knows downhill and golf are almost identical.
  • 4 2
Danny Hart would make Tomac his bitch at Pebble Beach
  • 14 1
So excited to see Gwin this year on specialized, keep on gwinning!
  • 1 0
 And on Sram...
  • 2 0
Yeah, not a mention of why he chose SRAM over Shimano when he elaborated on the other relationships.

On Fox testing - Bring a modified/simpler, age old platform to the market, say its a brand new development, call it CTD. Let the public test it extensively. The shit feedback we get from them will let us know what we need to change. JOB DONE.

What a lovely grounded individual Aaron Gwin is though.Smile

And here comes the legend man himself. So adorable bloke- just a rider; a good one. Such a different attitude the others (i.e. Semenuk, etc.). Good luck to Aaron- he deserves it!
  • 1 0
Great vid.cant wait till the fox 40 is on the demo for us who have to buy them from the shop.2014 model?
Respect for AG ,the best and not a show off like you get in other sports.winter approaching here so some muddy downhill coming up, then a break till spring here in little old NZ.
Would love to make it to whistler.
  • 3 0
That looks like project x or hellrazor, not too many spots in Southern California with pine trees! No more slowmo I like seeing how insanely fast he is!!
  • 7 7
Gwin will be one of those guys that leaves the sport eventually, starts a Christian-based MTB camp, and will be impossible to pry any opinions on his past out of him. He'll just be like "I decided to stop racing." done. nothing more. end interview.
  • 12 0
And heaven forbid that!!! Oh my god, an athlete/celebrity/person of importance who won't publish a sex tape/tell all/expose??? Whatever will we do?? Ha ha. Good for him. He's a mellow guy, but remember that adage about still waters running deep? Yeah. This guy has deep water for days. Smile Good on ya, Gwin. One thing is for sure: he'll always stay true to himself and honest with himself about whatever he needs to do, which is the kind of guy I can cheer on. Smile

I could see gwin ending up in some team high up training americas next crop of riders when he retires or maybe with his own team. He has got to be a sponsors dream at the moment.
  • 1 0
^^ agreed. He'll parley this success into something much bigger. He refers to "Goals" and "Oppurtunities" alot in his interviews.
  • 2 0
I need some new brakes.....I want him to start selling his brakes on ebay. He must have tons of them...."barely used", "virtually brand new"...

Wonder what changes will be made, or have been made to his race frame set compared to Sam Hills last Spesh frame set?
  • 3 1
I don't think that they will often modify the mold for the carbon Demo just for him.
  • 2 0
He looks so calm and fast over insanely technical terrain!

flag Maverickdh00 (Apr 24, 2013 at 13:58) (Below Threshold)
Apart from incredible bike skills, looking so calm is about decent suspension tune, thats the difference between us and them, we still wont go as fast, but ride his suspension or get that level of tune and you will look calm too, our std stuff is pretty average compared to what they get, Ive ridden some pro tune and even while it was too stiff for me, stable, confidence inspiring to say the lest! I just cant get into Gwin not sure why, huge respect for his riding ability, and whats hes done as a rider in the sport, I dont like or respect his attitude to the World Champs! maybe its that, dunno, just cant warm to him. Hes a hell of a rider though!
  • 6 0
Yea they have super suspension. They get better springs and seals that's what makes them sooo fast. It has nothing to do with the fact that they dedicate all their time to the sport...and that they were born with something extra. Its all in the bike not the rider, put Gwin on my bike he'll never win a race again...

  • 1 0
You know, I'm happy for Minnar to get it, but Rob put it perfectly "that's not how we wanted to see it go down". Can't wait for this season.

 honestly i was happy too!
  • 2 0
hmm proto fox 36 forks in background?
  • 1 0
Looks like 34s to me. I think they're phasing the 160mm 36s out. But I'm not sure.
