11.3.2012 Trek World Racing

Aaron Gwin lead the way today for all three Trek World Racing riders who ended up on the podium at the South African national race held on the improved Pietermaritzburg course that will host next week's World Cup opener. With a scorching time of 4m 14secs, Aaron was 3 seconds ahead of last year’s fastest World Cup qualifier Mick Hannah (AUS).

Youngest team mate Neko Mulally (USA) showed that his specific preparation for this event was paying off. After qualifying 7th due to a puncture late in the run, Neko stormed the course in the final and had a super solid run finishing 3rd with 4m 25secs just ahead of Troy Brosnan (AUS) and one second ahead of team mate Justin Leov who rounded out the podium.

The course in Pietermaritzburg has been modified to deal with wet weather, yet despite this, overnight rain made some of the sections almost unrideable in the first training runs of the day. Fortunately the thunder storms that had threatened all day held off and the racing got under way in sunny, yet blustery conditions. Neko set off 7th last and immediately went into the hotseat after a perfect run. He would stay in the lead until Mick Hannah knocked him out with his impressive 4m 17secs run (remembering that Aaron had qualified fastest with a 4m 25secs). Aaron appeared just under a minute later and record a stunning 4m 14secs, with clear signs of a fall on his right leg.

bigquotesYeah, I fell on the second corner, but otherwise I was really happy with the run today. The course dried out and the wind made for some extra pedalling, but all in all a good fun day. Great to see Neko and Jusso up there in 3rd and 5th. - Aaron Gwin

bigquotesThe improvements made to the track were awesome! I really enjoyed riding it this weekend. It felt good to score a podium today and that gives me confidence going into next week. - Neko Mulally

bigquotesI had a productive weekend with no setbacks so that was positive. I learnt a lot about the course/setup and what needs to be focused on leading into next week. Great to see Neko so strong and Aaron sending a clear message to everyone!- Justin Leov

^^ supr-ridr: Getting pissed at somebody for being stoked. Kinda........ sad.

Almost everybody wants their country to do well in competition. That's why we have the Olympics. You don't think that Australia was happy when Hill was winning? Britain when Gee or Peat won? Just because Americans are happy to be relevant again doesn't make us cocky. Get over yourselves.

DANG!! Gwins time!! He killed everyone! Neko!! Alright!
  • 11 2
I can't wait for the nation bashing to begin, oh and the accusations that he dopes every single day and 10 times before each race.

looks like neko lost some pounds.

Well, I have no issues with being proud of the home team and cheering them on. I'm hoping the other USA riders like Strobel, Riffle, and Keene kill it this year too, but I'll also be cheering on several non-US riders as well. AND, it would be freek'n awesome if we *could* develop a DH scene as impressive as say Europe or New Zealand. When I was at Whistler, I met people from every corner of the world and liked every one of them because we were stoked to be riding. Let's be honest, there's always the element of cockiness in any competitive sport.. I got the impression that scott-townes is just stoked. Let people be stoked. Be stoked.

being a nation which is far in the east, and nobody really border this sports is growing here ... (on Gwin issue) i'm not really his fan, and i don't even know him. BUT, I think Gwin is the man who set a new level of downhill racing. it is exciting to see he win any game , yeap any game.. and, it is even exciting to see any man who can break his winning. let the season begin dudes! Big Grin

With all respect to Gwin he often exaggerated a bit on he's 'falls'

With all respect wilson, you're basing that off nothing. Let's wait until we see some footage, alrighty?

no denying that gwins pretty fast but he has next to no style and that's why you don't see him in bike movies like you see someone like Steve Smith or Gee. That's why he will never be my favorite rider even though we are from the same country.
  • 19 4
Substance over style all day long.
  • 29 1
Hey smarty pants I recall seeing gwin in a pretty sick segement in some tiny bike movie called 3 MINUTE GAPS. It probably sucked though your right.
  • 10 1
 Also "the tipping point"
  • 10 2
Did you not see 3 second gaps supr-ridr? He has tons of style. Your notion is hilarious.
  • 8 1
He has also only been riding since 2008, so not many films have been made since then that he could star in. His Tipping Point scene is my favorite.
  • 4 3
adam if you are talking about Gwin, he has been riding for a looong time, back when Yamaha (at least I think it was a yamaha, old grainy video) made a DH bike.
  • 2 1
@clarkeh, can you post up the video in question?
  • 2 0
I am doubting myself now but it was a DVD we have where I work (forgetting the name of it atm) but I will double check tomorrow

 yaaa mick

Gwin started riding DH in 2008, and entered the WC circuit 8 months later. And not that I agree with him having no style (he has some of the biggest whips of anyone on the circuit), the bottom line is that he is a racer, first and foremost. Getting to the bottom before anyone else is his first priority.
  • 5 1
i thought "winning" was always in "style". That's like discounting the others on the circuit who've never made the box at a race for not winning. like smike said his priority is to get first. he can style when he's off the clock.
  • 28 5
What the heck are you talking about Gweggy?? Aron is one of the nicest down to earth cats in the DH game! I had the pleasure to race with the guy for nearly a month at the Southridge Winter Series and never did he show any kind of Euro snobbery or displayed a dush-baggery attitude. He chilled and shook hands with the slow and inexperienced riders just as he did with the local pros, no way man' Aron is a true peoples champ here in Los Angeles and all over of Southern Cali. GO GWIN GO!

Aaron Gwin is changing the game! The guy is focused, humble, and rips the trail so well it looks effortless! Props for bringing the DH focus back in the states! I can just imagine all the younger generation DH riders that are going to learn and bring it as well! Anyone overseas needs to step there game up! Were back!!!!!..................................
  • 11 0
 Yeah Neko!
  • 11 1
2.13 seconds is not 3 seconds...
  • 6 1
Gwin knows it's all about the wind. Watch him hold his tuck, ride low, as long as he can in every section you can do it. The big guys with power (aka Minnaar, Peaty, Atherton, etc..) need to get LOW. They ride too upright and that's a lot of drag on them. Troy, Hart - are small = less air resistance. Skin suits are out - but no doubt would shave SECONDS. Aerodynamics is critical.
  • 2 2
 So I should shave everything............???

So stoked to see Neko up there! Congrats Neko!
  • 5 1
Downhill racing is all about being the fastest down the course...PERIOD. All you saying you don't like Gwins style go watch some played out BS dirt jumping video, or any of the nwd videos.

So, CET is GMT+1 and we live in Vancouver which is GMT-7, so that means the race will be showing at 5am our time, and the chicks will be before this (super keen to see if Tracey Mo is going to be there and if Tracey Hannah can give Racheal and Emile a run for their $$!), so thinking I'm prob not going to get up in time to watch this!!! Does anyone know if Red Bull is going to have replay available?

Ron Warners going to have to think of new lines for this guy! Cuz by the looks he's going to dominate again... And again..... And probably again for many years! What the fuck does this guy eat! He's a machine! To the UCI guys, I'm writing to tell you that you may as well stamp his name on every gold medal! Just a quick heads up! Cheers. The welshman!
