Alberta Freeride Award 2011 Wrap-up

Just want to say thanks to all the riders who came out to Moose Mountain on Sunday October 2 for the 10th Annual Alberta Freeride Awards. MMBTS had a great race and lots of riders we're burning up the laps all day long.

The AFA’s kind of faded away for a while but with the growth of the sport and with the formation of the MMBTS we simply had to revive it. The change from having AFA’s in March to the end of the actual riding season was a great choice. That way we can actually celebrate not only the award recipients but the season itself.

The day couldn’t have worked out any better. Earlier in the week weather reports were for rain mixed with snow but it was a bluebird day. Possibly one of the best days at Moose all season.

We added a couple of fun “events” during the AFA’s; the log pull and the bike toss. These two were almost more fun than the riding during the day.

The Alberta Freeride Awards are successful because of the riders. This event is all about you.....the riders of Alberta. So that means that going into next year’s AFA’s the success of the event is up to you. We’ll be opening up nominations earlier next year and creating an AFA Facebook page. That way you can get the word out on who’s killin’ on the trails, dirt jumps, parks and trail building.

We want to make sure that this is truly awards for all Alberta riders so if you know of somebody who you think should be nominated, regardless of where they’re from, go for it!

Reg Mullet was, once again, a multiple AFA winner this year but he wants everybody to know that there’s lots of other rider who deserve an award. He’s actually decided that he’s going to give the Freeride Advocate Award to David Barcham the secretary for MMBTS. And he wants the Trailbuilder award to go to both Justin Miller & Jerome Pageau. Congrats to those guys for sure!

Here is a full list of the final results:

As it turns out the winner of the 2011 Park/Urban Rat 17 and under hasn’t lived in Alberta for 2 years so……lets get all of you to help us give the AFA to the rider that deserves it! Send your submission to calgarycycle@shaw.ca and we’ll give the award out at the end of November.

A big shout out goes to our sponsors; Calgary Cycle, Pure Cycle, Chromag, Santa Cruz, Dakine, Devinci, Oakley, Troy Lee Designs, GoPro and Ryeka Sports.
