On Sunday night a crowd of a few hundred strong came out to see which riders took home the 2007 Alberta Freeride Awards. Winners in 13 categories got to take home garden gnomes as trophies along with bragging rights for the year.

13. Freerider of the Year: Reg MulletBrad Ewen of Red Bull and Crankworx fame MC’d the event and announced the winners while Devinci sponsored rider Mike Kinrade handed out the goods.
Ewen put it best by saying all the awards were “chosen by the people”, which reflects what kind of event this is. With the nominees and the winners being chosen by fellow riders this makes the AFA’s a true rider-driven event. The 2007 AFA’s were voted on by over 1,000 people this year by logging onto
www.calgarycycle.com/afa, and it’s great to see so many people supporting our sport. The running for several awards was a tight race, but in the end the people spoke and 13 lucky winners took home the awards.
As for the Fat Tire Race, the gloomy weather didn’t stop almost 150 riders from participating and hucking themselves through the terrain park at COP. Earlier in the week, most people thought that it would be a slush-cup out there… but that wasn’t the case. There was some carnage on the course but for the most part you couldn’t wipe the smiles off of the riders faces… I think they were just happy to be on bikes again after too many long winter months. BIG props goes out to Jamie Furguson for organizing the Fat Tire Race.
So…when it was all said and done
OVER $20,000 worth of swag was tossed or given out to the energetic crowd.
One lucky little grom “Superman Dan” went home with a brand spankin new 8Flat8 courtesy of the good folks over at Devinci. Joe Cheung took home the complete Devinci Kicker and Reuben Krabbe was the elated recipient of the Santa Cruz Heckler.
The after party at The Drum and Monkey was stellar with everyone chillin out to tunes provided courtesy of DJ Matt B. People mingled, drank and pretty much just had a good ‘ol time.
Thanks to everyone that came out for this years AFA’s and congrats to the winners.
