Everything about this contest was good
. The riding was off the hook, the atmosphere was awesome and the crowd was big. The perfect combination. Congrats to the Claw for putting together a truly special event.Final Results top 5
1. Cameron Mccaul
2. Brandon Semenuk
3. Kyle Strait
4. Andrew Taylor
5. Alex ProRun Breakdown
Alex Pro ended up 5th, his run was clean, with a solid floated backflip off the last jump.
Andrew Taylor finished up 4th, a solid run consisting of a switch 270 up top, a no can off the boner log, and a big superman off the last double.
These two have definitely broken out this year, and next year expect them to be even closer to the top of the podium.
Kyle Strait was third, with nasty tables all throughout the top section of the course, and a nearly clean doublewhip on the last double. Strait rode smooth all weekend, but just did not do enough tricks up at the top of the course to warrant a higher score.
Brandon Semenuk has arrived. The young Trek/Sram rider proved that last weekend's podium at Crankworx was not a fluke, once again dethroning all the top riders but one. He also proved that he is mr. consistency when it comes to tricks, landing everything smooth and stomped. He started his run off with a no can off the step down up top and eventually ended up no handering the 2nd last double and then stomped a tailwhip clean on the last double. Watch for his first big win in 08.
If there is any one person that truly reflects what slopestyle and mountain biking is about in general it's Cameron McCaul. He is always riding for fun, and in general just loves to ride. No one had a run packed with as many technical tricks as Cam, he was the only rider to flip off the step up step down in the middle. This obstacle has almost no lip at all. Soon he will be flipping off of flat takes offs on drops. He also stomped a tailwhip on the last jump. His run came during the first set of runs and really set the bar. Everyone one else knew that they had to really step it up and send it in the 2nd runs. In the end no one was able to do this, and Cam ended up at the top of the podium for the 2nd time in major slopestyle competition this year. Highlights
included last weekends crankworx winner Ben Boyko 360'ing the step up step down in the middle clean, and Darren Berreclothe 360'ing the opening step down into the contest. Both had runs that ended prematurely though, so neither were able to crack the podium. Darren really encouraged wearing fullface helmets and it was good to see almost all of the riders sporting them. A few riders faces were saved by this decision. Lowlights: there were no lowlights
. Maybe the music during the first runs. The Beatles are not exactly slopestyle music. High Jump Contest
The high jump contest was the most exciting thing i've personally watched all year. There were no tricks, just big air. It came down to the Claw and Thomas Vanderham trying to jump, by my estimate, a height of 14 or 15 feet. Darren took the win be clearing it by an inch on his second run. Definitely a contest that should continue. Tyler Mccaul and Alex Reveles also impressed, but were not able to hang with the canadians.Darren Berreclothe has set the standard that which all other slopestyles should be judged upon
. I cannot wait to see what he has in store for next year, no doubt bigger and even better.
