2013 Red Bull Rampage: The Biggest Crashes

Oct 17, 2013
by Nathan Hughes

SOMETIMES IT HURTS

DID. YOU. SEE. THAT!? Rampage 2013 saw riders going bigger and burlier than ever before. Amplitudes that 10 years ago, no one would think possible on a push bike so subtly modified. Some of the features created and conquered this past weekend were simply beggars belief and I can only attempt to assure you - through the inadequate power of the written word - that in the flesh everything genuinely is that much bigger, that much faster and that much more likely to make you sick in your shoe at the sight of it.

When boundaries are ready to be broken, so are bodies. It came as no surprise that things went awry for more than a few of the brave pioneers of mountain biking this time around. But all contenders know two things...One: In this game, injuries are all but inevitable. And two: The Red Bull Rampage is the most outlandish and dangerous event the bicycle world has ever known. The riders are fully aware of what they're getting themselves into; they see the difference between what risks are mandatory and use their expertise to avoid those more voluntary. Sometimes though, there's nothing to be done but take the fall. So without further ado, take a deep breath and revel in the safety of your own home while we take you through the biggest and baddest bails of the 2013 Red Bull Rampage.

Yep, sometimes it hurts.

Kenny Smith wishing and wondering. Get well soon bro.
A Rampage silhouette of broken dreams. Kenny Smith, wishing and wondering...get well soon bro.

Fairclough on his first run.
I don't think it's going too far to say that some hucks this year were headed towards the bounds of appearing physically impossible. Fairclough's 50ft canyon gap to flat - at least nobody gets hurt in the air.

Judge Bender amp Judge Spangler
Some people take a fall better than others. Some people are in a league of their own...we asked Josh Bender, the ultimate survivor of brutal crashes, how a man should deal with an untimely eject.

bigquotesWell usually what you do is pick yourself up, dust off...get some ice and grab a couple of cold beers and you know, nurse your wounds! But what all these guys out here are becoming familiar with is just rest and taking care of yourself, man. - Josh Bender

2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Mitch Chubey recites the age-old motto 'pain is temporary, glory is forever.' He would suffer a broken finger, banged up shoulder and chipped clavicle. He'll be back in no time.

Vanderham
Plenty of the freeride's finest tasted the Utah dust. Unfortunately, it would be the first year since the conception of Rampage that Thomas Vanderham would miss out, due to busting his ribs the night before the finals.

2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Semenuk surely had the most aggressive line on the mountain and had he stomped it it's likely he would have stormed the podium. Sadly, just like last year, he couldn't keep rubber side down and crashed after his 360 before the infamous canyon drop.

Doerfling scopes the scale of the beast
The Oakley Icon sender was on a whole new breath-taking scale this time round. This truth was reinforced by just how few riders sampled it's terrifying airtime over the week. Pioneer, James Doerfling, scopes the scale of the beast and tries to get his head around the approach.

James Doerfling with the best crash ever. Picture perfect ejection and just enough over the knuckle that he slid down the transition and stood up unscathed.
Doerfling had a sea of eager photographers raising and lowering their cameras in unison for his 8 or so runs-ins during Friday afternoon. Finally ready, he came in hot and you would have backed him to grease it nicely. In the end he was forced into a picture perfect ejection, just enough to clear the knuckle and to slide cleanly the full length of the transition, standing up totally unscathed...to the absolute disbelief and stoke of stunned onlookers.

Doerfling...icon sender survivor number 1.

bigquotesI knew I was going to be pedaling hard all the way to the lip. I was in the zone, feeling good so I just went for it...got out there, thought it was all good, then I started nosing and I was gonna case so just at the last second, leap-frogged over the bars and base-ball slid all the way down the tranny. Got super lucky and happy to still be alive! - James Doerfling

the top claimed lots today 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
In the finals, Doerfling then lost his bike into the ravine at the start of his first run, but managed to cling to the rocks and avoid the same fate. He laid it down with a vengeance on his second try and charged his run possibly faster than anyone else.

Logan on the way up for his flip
Last year's third place, Logan Binggeli, would take one of the most severe falls of the contest in his second run of the final, a wholly undeserved injustice because he pretty much nailed the trick perfectly.

2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Binggeli landed his flip so close to clean, but was bounced slightly off to one side. He clipped the slabs used in the landing as he went off the edge of the transition - second broken femur of the contest.

This year we ve got all the same crew out as last year all my friends digging away looking at bigger better things. I ve been shovelling since Tuesday when they let us I m beat dude. Just non-stop sun up sun down moving dirt. Lucky this Rampage is a lot cooler cos I think a lot us would be dead by now out in the heat. It s about pacing yourself and making sure you ve got all your bells and whistles ready for Sunday.

bigquotesThanks everyone for the healing vibes, just got back from first walk on crutches! #roadtorecovery #illbeback - Logan Binngeli

Crashes suck. Especially off something as gargantuan as this. Luckily Gully walked away from both his massive crashes off the old Oakley Icon sender.

Crash 2 for Gully was no softer than the first
Crash 2 for Gully was no softer than the first. It was a major credit to him to take a second try right after such a horrific impact. It made for all the more difficult viewing to see him get worked in almost exactly the same way twice.

Salt Lake City hopeful, Dustin Schaad's bike dancing above him before following the same path. He appeared in view between the cliffs, took an OTB and to everyone's horror, flew straight down into the ravine. Most photographers failed to capture a complete sequence for fear they might be witnessing a fatality.

bigquotesThe biggest crash at this Rampage would be a toss up between Mark Matthews and Dustin Schaad. But Dustin Schaad fared a little better because he did not break his femur. He just popped his ankle out and popped it back in... - Josh Bender

Gee's epic gap from last year was given a complete overhaul by Mitch Chubey. In practice the plan was for he and friend, Mark Matthews, to hold off hitting until the qualis. Mitch stuck to the plan, but Mark went for it, keen to get it off his mind a day early. With a shady run in and a bit of wind it knocked him straight into the rock ledge with pretty devastating consequences.

Mark Matthew s didn t go the way he planned. With a shady run in and a bit of wind it knocked hip straight into the rock ledge of Gee s gap from last year.
Matthews went down hard and brutally compound fractured his femur. Carried off to the hospital in quite a bit of pain, it was a horrible sight for everyone present. Heal up soon Mark!

bigquotesSurprisingly it didn't hurt that much. Swelled a ton though. Broke my femur in 2 places just below the hip. - Mark Matthews

Mark Matthews

Yes it was a proper job, no question.

The heroes of our sport are continuing to push us into future with an unprecedented velocity. Expectations are smashed quicker than the bones and no one knows where - or whether - some kind of limit will one day be met. The Red Bull Rampage is the true front line where the World's top athletes go to battle with our concept of what's possible on a mountain bike. So as the contest closes for another year, we should all take a bow to the masters of our incredible gravity sport. We wish all those who put their bodies on the line, in the name of progression, the best recoveries and look ahead - because you never know what we'll be witnessing next.

Heal up well guys. Morphine is actually not that antequated and is still used quite regularly!
  • 2 0
Huge props to all these guys for taking a beating for the progression of the sport
  • 6 1
I hope this trend of massive injuries and crashes changes soon , it's getting to the point where I wanna look away on every other run because of the ugly crashes
  • 6 2
I broke my femur bone 1,5 year ago... I still cannot ride in standing position. here is photo: tiny.pl/qxvgx
  • 4 1
I did the same! But yours looks bad with little peices broken off, maybe a plate and screws would have helped to put everything in alignment, i broke mine For a second time 3 years after the first, it made a mess of things with the hardwear inside, if you continue to challenge lifes big hits, you should have the rod taken out Later after it heals! Consult a good sports med dr. Remember the human body is the best machine ever created!!! Take care of it!
  • 3 2
I Compound Fractured my femur into three pieces from hip to knee in 02, One 18 inch rod Two 6 inch screws in hip and Two 2.5 inch screws in femur just above knee. My advice leave the rod and any pins/screws that are near or in the hip bone in place. Blood flow from hip to femur is critical the less it gets torn into the better. Remove all lower screws/pins. Pressure from impacts like falling, Jumping and running place tremendous pressure on these screws. Screws placed in the hip bone are the strongest ie: they are placed into larger amounts of bone. Screws in the lower portion of the femur are the weakest. These screws WILL BRAKE LOOSE causing great amount's of pain and require lengthy recovery periods, Just to be re injured next time u jump off the Bike. I spent ten years battling two 2.5'' Bitch screws, Had them removed two years ago and haven't had a single problem...
Good luck to you Mark hope for a speedy recovery!!

I was curious to see what happens between frames 10 and 11 of his crash. Looks gnarly. I hope he heals up quickly.
  • 5 6
"I bring my own pain management team from the streets every time I go under the knife because know better now"

Wow you must be some "sortah" idiot.
  • 1 3
More xrays... That broken femur is it. Just think where these dudes would be without modern medicine. Takin shit for granted todo one big line is a young mans game, not cuz kids heal fast but cuz they don't know better. Good luck to all who get hurt, you have my sympathies.
  • 4 3
Sortah: Screws are only needed in the healing processes to ensure stability and proper formation of the femur. The femur under stress will compresses and twist only fractions a millimeter, twisting being the bones weak point. Once the bone has healed lower screws prevent this normal function, If left in place the bone at these points takes on loads and forces it cant handle thus braking away from said screw. With screw's removal bone is once again able to flex as mother nature intended. These minute movements do not effect the rob, do to the rod's placement in bone Marrow a non solid almost liquid material. From personal experience normal femoral movement is not effected in any way by the rod, its not moving like a unbolted shock, its not moving around to much and there is no pain. But if u really want it gone fine wait the six to nine months for the femur to heal then get right back in to the surgeon have them remove the top portion of the hip so that they can then remove the hardware. Oh wait lest tack on another six months to be all better.. Don't forget the risk of loosing blood flow to the femur all together from having multiple brakes and surgeries on the femur and hip bone. Frankly that surgery sucked ass once i wouldn't want to do it twice. removing to screw's was a breeze three weeks on the crutches followed by three weeks walking light jogging and your right as rain!

Hey guys, Mark Matthews here. So its been 3 months and I'm starting to walk around. I'm on a strict diet + supplementing, doing lots of physio, have an ultrasound bone stimulator and I'm going to the gym. Seems to be paying off, its healing quick considering how bad it is. To the other guys who have had really gnarly femur breaks: would you recommend taking the rod out? I don't plan on toning my riding down once the bone is 100%.

 This sport aint for sissies.

I know right? Can you imagine the second when you realize, shit... this is all going quite wrong.

Confidence: the feeling you have right before to truly understand the magnitude of the situation.

I thought for sure the would have been a funeral for someone on Monday the way some of these crashes unfolded

Hope all the Athletes heal up well especially mark and Logan they've got a long road to recovery , I wish you's both the best

I am both thankful, and shocked that only a couple femur fractures and concussions were the worst injuries out there. Honestly scared when I see the crashes, stay healthy boys!
  • 16 1
Wait, a compound fracture means the bone was sticking out. Mark is tough as nails.
  • 8 0
Cant even begin to imagine the pain of braking a femur... but breaking it in two places and a compound fracture. Holy shit....
  • 2 0
Not going to lie, that just made me feel a bit queasy...
  • 16 1
We need a better sequence of Mark's crash!
  • 7 1
i think he skipped a couple frames on purpose
  • 6 1
There is video of it. It's in one of the rampage edit's, but it cuts off half-way through. Looks rough :/

so brutal. bummed me out to see Kenny Smith out of action. I was looking forward to Smith, Aggy, Doerfling, and Lacondeguy the most of everyone. Smith and Bearclaw showed up and stood right next to me and my buddy on Sunday for a while spectating. I didn't know he was hurt until i saw him there with the crutches. didn't even know what to say to the guy, always feel weird bugging dudes when they look down and out, or when we saw them at restaurants at night and shit, but wishing the dude a speedy recovery, both those dudes. his videos are always insane. be easy man if you're on here, next year.

The amount of courage these guys have is amazing. I would never even make it out of the starting gate..Everyone involved gets my respect whether they made it to the bottom or not.
  • 11 7
I dont like how Red Bull is pushing every extreme sport. Its like a uni formation under tons of red bull logos and all that matters is bigger higher and more dangerous. Its only a matter of time before somebody dies. Call me a sissie, but thats not how 99.9% of ppl are riding. Personally i prefer the vids where you feel the good mood riders have going out and riding their local -by far not as hard- trails.
  • 4 1
So just don't watch Rampage. Leave it to those admiring riders and concept. It's that easy.
  • 4 2
WTF? I know what you are saying about wanting to see regular riding, but the rampage is the pinnacle of our sport! It's f*cking inspiring man and IMO Red Bull have done a great job supporting MTB. Well not supporting, but marketing the shit out of it & putting up the cash.

So irrespective of RBs motives, the end result is the same; people pushing boundaries, going further & bigger, and if that doesn't excite you maybe you should just buy a road bike and be done with it..
  • 6 1
Ok... you're a sissie! (You did ask! ;-)

That's like saying 'I don't like watching Formula 1 (Or Nascar for you Yanks!) because that's not how 99.9% of drivers drive."
  • 1 2
I think that what Jebusfu intended to say is that sometimes the quantity of testosterone involved in a RB event is more than a human body can handle....
Now what you expect to see in the next Rampage? A backflip frontflip over an higher Icon Sender? Rider's using hardtails? ..and then?
  • 1 0
 (edit) ..." ....tailwhip frontflip..."

I would love to see someone do a backflip front flip!

Sequence of crash #2 for Gully is hilarious. Not because of the crash but that it scared the hell out of the digger resting on his shovel... In all seriousness, I do respect the size of testes these dudes have. They are taking a chance but living life to the fullest! Get well soon, boys!
  • 1 0
Big respect n huge get well to all riders that suffered for this sport of gods! Thank you so much for what you do and what you give us that can only dream of achieving what you have. Here's to quick pain relief and getting back in the saddle asap x

Benders first aid methods have been my policy more than once this season, well prescribed by experience sir ! Witnessing rampage somehow diminished the exploded knee agony I was suffering from Sunday. Thanks guys for the magnitude of injuries that help keep it all in perspective !
  • 1 0
No doubt these guys are the toughest on the planet!!! I can't believe how those guys just walk away from crashes that I hope never to experience in my lifetime. Even more respect to those who have to get carted out, but are back on the bike even before doctor's orders. Wish these guys luck in a speedy recovery!

I just love Kirill Chrbanov. He looks so sad in the video...pity it didn't work out for you Kirill, but I am sure you will be back! Please keep riding, if only for your pleasure!

  • 2 0
Its crazy how he says it didnt even hurt to much, I would probably be crying after surgery still!
  • 2 0
You here that quite often when people talk about injuries. It's likely that when you suffer an injury like that there's a lot of adrenaline flowing in the immediate aftermath, which is why it ends up not hurting as much as you think it would. Hopefully by time the adrenaline wears off you are in proper medical care and can get something for the pain.
  • 1 0
He won't be saying that in a few days. Wait until its time for physio, that is when the real pain comes.
  • 3 0
yeah no pain involved in mnt biking says every baller
  • 1 0
Hahahahahahah you saw that kids YouTube comment too!? How biking is for pussies and football and basketball are real man sports that actually take skill, and streigth

All I can say is:OUCH!! Injurys suck! I've been out 2 months with a concussion. Frown Heal up guys!
  • 2 0
My concussion was a stage 2 and I was only out of races for a week and a half.... Did u get a stage 4!?!?!?!?!?!
  • 2 1
I was almost unconscious when it happened, so it was moderate. But I got post-concussion syndrome, so it took forever to heal, and I was out of school for a month.
  • 2 0
Dude that blows!!! And ya the school thing was hard for me too cause I WAS affraid i was GOING TO have a brain anurisnm because of people's iPhones they put the LED flash on for text message alerts.... Well I passed out in physics because my brain had a very small anurisnm because someone took a photo (with the flash on) then someone's phone went off (with the LED alert on) and someone flipped the class room lights on and off really really quickly (all of this happened in 2 seconds) and I just went limp in my desk and everyone flipped out cause i was unconscious, and I almost had a seizure and died....... So that's my story.... If u wanna see how I got my concussion there's a vid up on my profile, oh and thanks for the follow Smile
  • 2 0
Oh and I was out for a good 35 to 40 seconds when i actually crashed my bike was the first thing i asked about when I came to..... Typical bike nerd thing to do ...lol
  • 2 0
Smile Yeah, whenever I crash, I'm always like, "My bike!!!"
  • 1 0
U have seen my crash now right?..... Cause my headtube should have snapped....... But the headset is the only thig that broke and even that broke like a week ago after i did a manual it just kinda snapped really loins and my front end was suddenly limp like a wet noodle
  • 2 0
I have a video of when my concussion happened and I thought it was a bad one. But out for 2 months?! Damn dude, how'd you crash JevinHoll?
  • 2 0
Most concussions heal in less than 3 weeks. However, postconcussion syndrome, which can happen even after a very small concussion, can take months or even years to fully resolve. I got one at the end of April, developed PCS, and had great trouble working, thinking, and just generally coping for several months. I didn't get cleared to go biking until three weeks ago. . PCS is not to be messed with.

"You have a sick and twisted world perspective son"
  • 1 0
Whats progression without risk, they don't those falls for us they take them for the sport.
  • 10 0
Interesting perspective. I think that at some point each rider has to decide for himself if he is progressing the sport or just hucking his meat for the profit of his sponsors and the entertainment of the spectators. Many of these injuries will haunt these fine young men for the rest of their lives.
  • 1 0
Somewhat agree cboutin, but doubt riders would tackle rampage unless they loved it, and better to get injured doing what you love than for some messed up reason like fighting over oil or such bullshit.

  • 2 5
 Zink got robbed.
  • 1 0
Yeah, i would say so but if you think about it, yeah we all wanted to see that b-flip again but i think its better that he didnt! he had just maid history,an to do so again an pressin his luck would of been scary he had already done it PERFECT! But if he did stomp his full run, yes ZINK would be #1.
  • 2 2
Zink did ONE TRICK. Yes it was epic and probably one of the gnarliest things I've seen done in any sport period... but it was one trick. The run in was slow to set it up and the run out was to avoid falling. ONE TRICK.

Highest he should have places is second with second moving up to first. Had Zink even done 1 or 2 other small trick/jumps/gaps on his run he would have got first. Had he gotten another run he probably would have.

I don't think he got robbed. I do think that man sitting in first probably should have been sitting closer to were Tyler McCaul was sitting.
