Making a documentary takes time and planning. There are ride routes to arrange, cable cams to set up, people to muster and shots to be taken. But it's not all hurry up and wait. Cam McCaul, Fraser Newton and Adam Billinghurst had plenty of time for coffee swilling and shenanigans in between 'getting the shot' when they headed to Squamish for a #VWAdventure. In this Behind the Scenes installment we join the guys as they hit up the rock slabs and loam of Squamish.

Cam McCaul Visits Squamish - Photo Epic

If you've never ridden Squamish before, the Gouranga Rock Ride is the real deal. Here the guys hit the beast in the wet!

Haha.... Vernon posts about asking us to not be a*sholes just before ANOTHER VWAdventures ad hits the feed. Coincidence? likely not! Smile

Go easy y'all!

You can't stop ads. Why isnt anyone complaining about the other million ads on the sidebars and at the top of the PB site? I don't mind these kind of videos. They are still entertaining to me. I don't click on the things in the feed that I'm not interested in (like XC, clothing related stuff, etc) so if people are really against ads, don't click them?

How do you think all the amazing and free content is paid for?
  • 71 2
How about the glass half full version: VW paid a bunch of rad MTBers to ride their bikes, and got a film crew to film them, and all you had to do was see 10s of Cam driving through a puddle.
  • 2 0
Unlike everyone else, I'm not and haven't slagged on any rider for getting paid or PB for running ads. I did however try to bust VW's balls about it being a bit too soon here in Canada for brand rebuilding, we just got the verdict on the tdi crap a few months ago and the wounds for many are still fresh. More relevant, however, is the timing of Vernon's article; while totally accurate, is laughably suspect when this article appears a short while afterward. I honestly wonder if VW didn't somehow "inspire" that article... i.e. wise folks at PB realized that they needed to demonstrate they are at least trying to calm the slagging in order to maintain the ad revenue (which, yes, gives us all awesome content for free, so do what you gotta do folks to keep it coming folks!)

I'm sure Cam isn't exactly balling out on cash flow from his sponsors, so ignore the VW part of all of this, and enjoy the fact that someone in the community is actually managing to pull in a nice little chunk of cash while riding their bike. Last time I checked, you weren't exactly forced to purchase a VW after this.
  • 35 2
This is what I dont understand. The MTB industry is NOT a cash cow for anyone. We are a small group of individuals who are passionate about our sport but lets not tell ourselves that we are a majority. The fact that a car manufacturer reaches out and actually pays riders to film edits is great news. Jeep did it for the RedBull Hardline and even though the FCA group has produces subpar products and even dangerous issues, I can look over those and applaud the fact that they were willing to associate with the MTB industry. We should put our ill directed anger towards things that are going AGAINST the MTB industry not towards the few mainstream companies that are trying to embrace it.
  • 6 9
That's where you are wrong. I challenge you to visit the Surrey hills and tell me that MTB is not a cash cow? Seeing as all and sundry are on 10k bikes, with all the kit & potential upgrades.

I'm not knocking them, as if money was no object, I'm sure we would all do the same. But there is money to be made.

Although to advertise at the level of MTB where the money is, it'd be more Porsche, Range Rover, Jag territory.

I know it is an affluent area, but not the only place like it. So just to discredit your theory somewhat! But don't take offence, I'm not being an a hole as requested recently :-)
  • 9 0
 @cunning-linguist: No offence taken!

I can see your point of view and although I disagree I happy you commented. I worked for a while (5 years) as a bike mecanic near Bromont,Canada. From my experience, mtb is not the main source of income for bike shops, that would be road and hybrid road bikes. But I can see that different areas might produce different results.

Anyhow, I just wanted to suggest that the sarcastic comments and seemingly angry rants againt VW for actually producing quality MTB edits is somewhat misplaced. I mean we can use all the help we can get to keep people and money coming in the MTB community.

CHeers!

@Nothing2say: ah I see your point clearer now & I do totally agree. Any funds assisting our great pastime, are very welcomed!

Also, I'm loving the cat photo. That thing is sheer brilliance! My cat (Pauline) would probably fancy him! :-)

Those elevation charts in the sidebars are good and accurate. -179 degrees is pretty steep...in fact it is upside down. These riders are good, but they`re not that good!
  • 11 3
I still don't see how 3 dudes and 3 muddy bikes and a car with two roof top bike racks got along? Apparently they had support trucks?
  • 8 2
I'm not a fan of watching ads, but they're necessary for the media, for the athletes, the photographers, videographers,... and the whole sport!

If more companies (like WV) out of the cycling industry were willing to invest their money in mountain biking - call it ads, call it sponsorship, or whatever - pro riders would earn a bit more money, there could be place for bigger and better pro teams, more/better events, maybe more riders would make it to being 'pro riders' and there could be money for more and better video and photo content.
  • 7 1
Love to all the butthurt whiners who are going to be complaining about how top riders don't get paid enough and there isn't enough mountain biking in mainstream media in a couple of months when Rampage is on again...

What kind of car are they driving in this film? Anyone?
  • 3 0
So we got to see a cool short about mountain biking in Squamish and in exchange had to watch about 3s of advertisement from a car company.

Also when did we go from being excited for mountain bikers actually managing to collect a paycheck for their work to hating on them? God knows they don't collect shit from bike companies, I'm always excited to see some mountain biker get a deal with a car company.

Man life is just so hard.

Honestly people which one of you would say no to any company that offered to pay you to take a trip with your friends to go and ride in Squamish or any other great Mtb destination?? That's right pay you to ride these trails and promote the Mtb lifestyle. Props to Cam for being in a position to do this.
  • 2 0
Sooooo, we don't want mtb to grow and we don't want the heroes of our sport, like Cam, to do mainstream advertising and possibly put some money in the bank? Are there any adults with bills and jobs against Cam making money or the great content we get on Pinkbike for free?

Starting to become weary of clicking anything with C-Mac's name on it now. Even he seems like he was tired of it right from the start.

Time to get back to biking now bro? Back to the mission? Back to the vision? Hope so.

Hey VW you lied about your emissions to the world , now your targeting the MTB world because some corporate douchebag told you there's an untapped market of people who spend all their money on their hobby, Fuck you and your piece of shit cars!
  • 12 10
Lol you mean by giving the customer a better product. No garbage reburning system. More power. Better fuel economy.
  • 27 5
Welp... VW are miles away from being pieces of shit from my experience. Not every single employee of VW lied to you, it was just a few intellectually impaired ones, so I personally do not see a point of hating an entire company. Guess what - corporate douchebags are all around you and you might support them without you even knowing that. But hating on a company that supports your hobby seems weird to me.
  • 13 4
You think VW is the only company cheating emission tests? Do you also believe Lance Armstrong was the only cyclist that was using steroids on the Tour de France circuit? Reality is, on this level of competition, you have to cheat to stay at the top. VW is playing the same game as all the other top car makers. And personally, that product placement is not so subtle but I find that all-road VW sexy as fuk

@Skinnyman: yeah 2L diesel is so baaaad compare to 7L cummins in american pick up trucks or 6.8L HEMI...they have ZERO emissions but they do need invade other countries to provide oil for this big engines...

@Skinnyman: well said- not to mention i can remember years and years ago before all the "advances" and increased popularity of mt biking VW was including Trek bikes with certain vehicles and supporting the industry in many ways .
  • 8 0
@Beez177: By same Teutonophobic rationale you're driving what? Either an 8l coal-roller, a 5l Mustang or your cousin? All of which have pathetic fuel consumption, power to weight and an inability to turn corners...
  • 7 1
@Beez177: I only buy the shit that I absolutely need and I do my best to buy from small environmentally-conscious companies. Even both of my two bikes have been made not further away than 400km from where I live and I saw the manufacturing process and waste-management myself.
Now you tell me a bit about yourself: is it the lies that pisses you off or the environmental impact? If both, do you happen also to hate Shell? You know about all the oil spills and the ways they silence media, right? Do you buy as little gas as possible because of that? Or maybe you stopped driving a car at all? You must be well aware that those spills have waaaaaaaaay worse consequences for the environment and represent a much bigger lie, right?
  • 9 1
 Why you so mad bro?

You do realize that cycling has been a part of VW's advertising for quite some time... don't you? This is nothing new.

Trek and VW worked together as co-sponsors 20 years ago. VW's been messing with e bikes for a while now. You can buy rebadged VW bikes. Cruisers. Townies. MTB. Etc. USA Cycling sponsors. There was a Trek edition golf back in 92.

Should I go on?
