After having some delays holding me back from moving to Toronto during the weekend, I was able to use the spare time to take some photos on race day at Camp Fortune. I still had tons of things to pack for my move to Toronto, but I focused instead on what gear I should bring to cover this race. In the end I packed my trusty Nikon D700, 80-200mm lens and a wide angle. With that gear I also brought two rain jackets, two backpack rain covers, garbage bags for the camera and a tarp (the weather network scheduled a dumping of rain to make the day just dandy!).
Arriving to the race early in the morning the weather seemed promising with light overcast skies. However by the time I started hiking to the top of the hill the rain began...
At the top the riders rush to get their practice runs in as they are notified practise will end an hour early due to weather conditions.
Some riders seemed to be pretty comfortable during practice.
With the rain going down hard, garbage bag jerseys were a plain sight.
This step up at high speed gives one a very nice feeling of weightlessness.
These small rocks are just a hint of whats ahead..
One way of avoiding slik rock is to just fly over it...
Low and Focused.
This section seems pretty simple, however last year my season ending crash happened just behind that rider.
The Dump, possibly the best place to watch the race. This section has many lines, some of them seeming impossible. New comers to Camp Fortune always find the dump pretty tricky.
I always have respect for those hardtail racers.
Focused and Composed
The Phat Moose drop is a very fun feature to ride and watch.
Lunch Time, the rain continues to pound down.
The race runs have now begun, the course is now coated with fog and the trails are sopping wet.
This fog means business!
Riders continue to ride through the fog with caution.
Puddles are forming all over the track.
The Dump is hard dry, adding fog and water doesn't make it any easier!
Many riders gave up on their goggles before half even completing half the course.
Before
After
Almost at the finish!
The race continued on for another 45 minutes. I made the conscious decision of going to the bottom as I was soaking wet along with all my gear. My voice was also shot, as I happened to be the one person screaming at every rider "GO, GO, GO! GET OF THE BRAKES! PEDAL!!"
For those of you interested in results heres a
