New Cane Creek AngleSets - Sea Otter 2011

Bikes that use the "E2" 44mm upper and 56mm lower head tube bore now have an AngleSet option.


Those riders who ride a Trek, or any other bike that uses a 44 upper bore and 56mm lower bore head tube combined with a tapered steerer fork, should be very happy to see that Cane Creek hasn't forgotten about them, it just took a little bit longer. Trek's Remedy would be the perfect application for this version of the AngleSet, given that Trek steepened the head angle by one degree and shortened the travel up front on the more recent models. This E2 compatible version lets Remedy owners slacken the bike back out to 67 degrees, while still running the stock 150mm travel fork.

Tapered steerer tubes in 44/49mm head tubes are now a go by moving the eccentric to the upper cup.


This neon green Santa Cruz's head tube has a 44mm upper bore and a 49mm lower, along with a tapered steerer fork - a blend that used to be a no-go. It is now possible by moving the eccentric from the lower headset cup to the upper. Just like with the new E2 head tube version shown above, the extra height (and therefore an ever so slackened head angle) is compensated for by the eccentric to give it the exact amount of offset desired.

2.5 degrees of adjustment is possible by using an eccentric in both the upper and lower cups.


Ellsworth's prototype FR180 short travel DH bike had an EC44 cup installed up top and an EC56 in the bottom, both using gimbals, that allowed the bike to be slackened out by a massive 2.5 degrees. They were the only builder at the show using this combination and while it may sound excessive, it really shows how adaptable the AngleSet can make a bike.

 it seams like a pointless product for me because i would buy the right frame and forks in the first place and never see the point of changing head angles depending on the terrain but there is defiantly a gap in the market for this product because i know riders that prefer to spend more time adjusting there bike than actually riding it.

 i think it is good because you can use 18cm fork on a bike who it Designed for 16cm travel fork (for exp reign x)

 I agree with your point, but only to a certain extent. We have gone into this discussion many times - so Im not going in depth here- but in the article Mike Levy points out a PERFECT application for such a device. The Trek Remedy is a sweet bike, but as Mike points out the latest iteration has been steepend. Good for some, but certainly not all. Enter the angleset.

 You wouldnt have to, you can use the stock length fork. Putting a longer fork on the bike would effectively change the head angle anyways so you actually prob wouldnt need the angleset. Plus it would void the warranty. Thats whats nice about the angleset.

 the longer fork void warranty because it changes the front angel and makes more presser on head tube.now with the AngleSets it wont changes the front angel.

 The longer fork actually produces more mechanical leverage on the headtube. It doesnt change the angle of the fork in relation. The angle-set DOES do that.

 Conspiracy theory: Cane Creek owns the mofia and they force all bike manufacturers to construct their bikes with extra steep/slack head angles, forcing us all to buy their products. I was forced to buy one as were many others. Think about it.

 If you think this product is lame because you either need to ride your bike more or the bike should have correct angles to start...You are missing it big time. Course variations, riding styles and for differences all make the big bikes ride different. This is one of the biggest innovations since the external BB. I assure you that if you buy a bike in 2011 forward it will come with an angle set or be a part of the preferred build. I know that if you could have it, if it fit in your frame or you actually could ride one and adjust it, you would run it in a second.

 Adjustable head angle headsets are great for frames that can take the stress. Good job canecreek for find ways for customers to tweek their geometry on their rigs if they choose to do so.

 I don't understand the negative comments about the Angleset...if you want a simple set up with no adjustablility, don't buy it or a frame that has it pre-installed. Someone who races or rides a bike to a level that having an adjustable head angle would make a difference has a definite use for this technology. For the average rider it's probably not of much use, but that doesn't mean it has no use to a certain segment of riders.

 Wow surprising amount of people posting that are actually UPSET that they have a choice? And interestingly a lot of negative opinions from people who haven't even used an angleset. What you SHOULD be upset about is when your choice is taken away-ie 26inch wheel size being fazed out purely to force the market into buying new bikes.( Even though they are proven to be lighter, stronger, faster accelerating, better centre of gravity. ) but I digress. Anglesets can make good bikes great. I am a mtb instructor/guide, I have a Mojo slr which is perfect candidate for an angleset, I get to have the benefits of the HD without the extra weight, meaning my all day, all mountain bike with dropper post is well under 11kg with 2.4 rubber all round. Don't get upset about choice. Get upset when it's taken away.

 I have one, its amazing, not to mention all you out there who talk about buying the right setup... what about those of us who don't have a bottomless budget, sponsors or time to research the bikes we buy? This is a great part for those looking to really sharpen their game. PERIOD!

 In my opinion, this is just something else to go wrong, bike manufacturers should concentrate on products for the real world, we dont really want adjustability, most people just want something that is reliable, not too expensive to buy, and something that you can just forget about rather than constantly fiddle with.

 I agree with you in the summer when I can just ride and love my bike, but in the winter I find myself wanting more theoretical adjustability. I know it is in my head, but I want it! I'm just glad I can get out and ride again before I end up buying more crap to make my bike better than I need it to be.

 Don't pretend you speak for everyone. I want adjustability, and I would absolutely use this in "the real world" as you call it. Just because you don't have a need/use for a product doesn't mean other people don't. Stop attempting to generalize so much.

 On the reliability issue, this may not be the greatest thing to happen to DH. There just seems to be too much banging around. I have a buddy with an angleset and it is kinda wobbly (back and forth) and makes a click click sound when you turn. He owns a bike shop and has been a mechanic for like 15 years so it isn't user error. He has even stated there have been a couple customers with the same issue. On the other hand I have poor friends with only one bicycle who only do light DH/AM type stuff and they have angle adjusting boners.

 Dude its not a generalisation if I said "in my opinion" and "most people" I was speaking for myself and the people I know and ride with who most certainly couldnt give a shit about a couple of degrees of adjustment to their head angle. I think you should probably take a bit more care in reading other peoples comments before you view your own. Nuff said.

 I am with HOJJJ, how many Mondraker, Scott riders do we all know that use the adjustment, time on the same day etc. to see what works best?

Not hating the idea, they are great for the weekend warrior Dh rider, looking for the magic answer to going fast.
Shame it involves the gym, training, fundamentals, riding and not a new headset/bike/fork/wheel etc.

 Considering that 2 degrees is the difference between a FR and an xc on a lot of rigs now (66-6Cool , I think 1 degree would make the difference. I've got a buddy who rides trails on his bike most of the time, but a couple times a year goes to the lift access parks. An angle set for him makes sense.

Personally I just dial the fork travel down on the way up and dial it back up before going down.

Timing. Sunday with K9 reducer cups - Slowest race runs and worst race result ever.
Timing. V10 with reducer bushings fitted - Slower than stock, tested with Freelap.

I guess the manufacturers know more than me and some internet forum :o)

 Ok, so I did 5 runs on each for the V10, timing with freelap, last 3 counting only.
Times were within 0.3s on 1min track on the standard setting and 0.5s with the offset bushings.
My times last weekend at the SDA Ae forest were 1.3s apart due to mistakes (gotta hate mistakes on race runs) and the track conditions changing.

As for the Sunday, I came in 0.11s up on people I normally beat by 20s (26s last weekend) or so and well down in my category (6th)

 This is a great product for some bikes, with this I can set my Iron Horse 7 point up for a mini DH rig 64 HTA, or a very capable AM rig at 68 HTA. All that only assuming a 2 degree sweep + or - and they are stating 2.5 if you get 2 of the concentric cups. This would let me have a 1 bike solution for a huge variety of terain. Bikes with a 1.5 HT benifit greatly from a product like this. Swap out to lighter weight wheel setup and I have anything from 35 to 40 pound rig.
